AS STUDENT COUNCIL members we all try to set a good example for other students to follow. We are always trying to do things which will make our stay at Yerona more pleasant. We carry on elections which we think resemble the National Elections as much as they possibly could. Also we have chartered buses for basketball games, the price of which we paid half. I thou ht I would enjoy getting out of school to go ,A at 9 to various stores to gget ads. But, when I was done I was so tired that I couldn't even wag my little, funny, old tail. But, we don't mind-George, Nonnie, Lucy, and I-we know that every ad we get just helps to make your yearbook better. A TRIBUTE- We, of the Staff Club, would like to pay tribute to Mrs. Harriet Higinbotham. Only through 'her hard work in securing ads have our yearbooks of the last few years been possible. Her importance has been known only to the members of the yearbook staff, and we thought it was about time that everybody knew about a person who really helps to make your yearbook possible. When I joined, I didn't know anything about Chess, but under Mr. tllockwellis expert instruction, I soon became an excellent player. tjokej We held a series of matches with each member having an opportunity to play every other member in order to find out who the best player was. tlt wasnlt Il1C.,l Our club plans to increase the skill of all of us so that we may find relaxation and comfort in the King of Gamesf, It is the ambition of our club to be able to hold matches with other schools in order to see what kind of players we really are. Working diligently all year around, we have produced biology notebooks showing proof of our study into plant and animal life. Having access to the lab, we are able to preform experiments to help further our knowledge. We have also been active around the school by putting on a cookie and candy sale to earn money for future use of the club. Under the leadership of Nick DeVita, presidentg Margaret Templeton, vice-preisentg Marlene Braeudigam, secretary, along with Mr. Mcllveeifs guidance, we have had niany exciting and interesting meetings. xg if I-1 u 4 X X f U O da S., N Q , 4 35,5 Drivers Club First Row: J. One of the most practical clubs in the school is the Drivers, Club. Our club was organized by Mr. VanCorder for the purpose of studying and learning the good principles of safe driving. With only one member holding a learners, permit in September, now more than half are practicing their driving. Various trips were taken throughout the year to acquaint us with the practical problems of driving. We also visited one of the local automobile service stations where we were given valuable instructions by one of the workers. Have you noticed Joe lntorre with a mashie? Well, he's the Golf Club,s president, hurrying to one of our exciting meetings. The club is holding as many of its meetings as possible outside. Practicing what? Well, what we have learned in our meetings about the game of golf. Mr. Tjiattis is giving us as much background as possible as we will all be par breakers someday. Along with' our enjoyment, the club is making a strong bid to enter the WPIAL Golf League, and put Verona's name into this sport in a competitive way. Why, its Geography Club, of course. And what does this new club do? We play games! We have teams and captains, each team is given points for the best papers of the quizzes we take. At the end of the year prizes will be given to the teams having the most points. The games are by no means simple, but we have fun playing them. For instance, did you know that -a-e --a---ai- will eventually spell Lake Champlain? I do and we also know that -a-a- I-a--- spells some island, do you know which one? Formerly a part of the Y-Teens, we have organized an independent club with our own name. Meeting Monday evenings under the leadership of Jean Stevenson, president, and the guidance of Mrs. Burrows, we have planned dances, parties, and other important events. Our other officers are Carolyn Loeffler, vice- president, Rhoduska Bright, secretary, and lda Mae Shook, treasurer. We celebrated Christmas, along with the Hi-Y, by packing baskets for the needy families of Verona. Also, in December we had a Christmas party for the members of the club. For the benefit of the whole school, we held a Sock Dance which was not only fun but entirely different from any other dance held at Verona High this vear. UMonday night again! another evening of fun at Hi-Yi' is a familiar exclamation heard from me. This group of boys, 24 strong, meet each Monday night under the capable guidance of Mr. Rockwell and Mr. Ireland. We are chosen from the high school on the basis of scholarship and good character. Our meetings consist of educational as well as entertaining aspects. Sports are uppermost in our minds with basketball, volleyball, and pingpong tournaments being held at various times throughout the year. The boys go on various trips-the most important being to the YMCA for an evening of swimming. The boys had a party at the end of the year for their best girls-and a good time of dancing and games was enjoyed by all. Maj orettes Although I don't look too good in a skirt, I was still one of the beautiful Twirlers of Verona High School. We really worked hard this year making up novel routines for each football game. We have been told that our member- ship improves the appearance of the band on the field. 'l'here are six majorettes and ten twirlers, and a mascot. Under the capable leadership of Mr. Bongiovanni we have been able to improve as individuals and, thus, improve the ability of our unit. That year, it was mostly all work and no play. However, toward the end of the year, we held a party which most of us attended and enioved. Sa 4 They say that the word sophomore means one who thinks he knows it all. but I don't think I know everything, really I don't: there may have been a few things I overlooked. However, our class didn't overlook the fact that we needed money for our Junior Prom. I believe we were the first class to start making money for the Prom before we were Juniors. We held a dance and got a nice lump with which to start our Junior year. This was the year of years for me. Why? Well, because this was the year we were to hold the Junior-Senior Prom, have a picnic, and also put on a play. First of all, under the direction of Miss Bodenhorn, we held our play. It was called We Shook The Family Treef' Then came the picnic. Having begged our 'idaddiesn for cars. we all managed to get to North Park where we all had a joyous time. Then came the day of days-the day of the Prom. Because we all worked so hard, the prom was a great success.
