Treasurer CLASS HISTORY FIRST QUARTER IFVSSITFTIGIWI i the field waiting for the whistle that would start them on their way into the struggle for knowledge. As the referee sounded the whistle, the freshmen lined up to tackle a strong opposing team of algebra, English, civics, etc. We began the struggle in our present new study halls and library, which later proved a big help in our victorious ending. As yet, the freshmen were a young team with little experience but, with the careful guidance of our tireless teachers and the energy of the sophomore class becksning us on, we were nearing the end of the first quarter. There was, however, one touchdown in this quarter of oJr schcol life and that was the establishment of the Beta Club to correspond with our already established Hi-Y Club. SECOND QUARTER lSophomoresl In the second quarter a new referee came on the field. He was our present principal, Mr. Chinn, who will be with us until the end of the game. As the game got tougher there were many times that the players failed to execute the plays correctly and thus were thrown for a loss by the opposing team. In the last few minutes of playing time we scored by crossing the goal for a Beta'Hi-Y Banquet. THIRD QUARTER lJuniorsl In the opening minutes of our third quarter, we elected a Captain, James Tippin, and several backfield runners, Edgar Schlitt, Joe Ingalls, and Erma James, who were to direct our game. However, the real supervision and plays came in the form of our Ccach, Mrs. Longaker, and her assistant, Miss Sharp. With such good leadership as we had chosen, many new plays and a tricky offense were worked up in order to raise the score. The first score came in the form of a beautiful pass, our Hallowe'en Carnival. Later in the quarter we scored on a very successful run in the form of our Junior Class Play, A Ready Made Family. As the time was running out we worked very hard, and, blocking out the opposing team, we once more passed for a touchdown, this time in the form of our long to be remembered Junior-Senior Barbecue. In the huddle for the last signal our leaders called a p'ay to go down forever in our minds as one cf the greatest moments of our entire football career-that was the Junicr-Senior Prom. It was the first time that we had ever' tried thistplay, but with all the guidance of our coaches we rallied over for the best and final score of our Junior quarter. FOURTH QUARTER lSeniorsl Entering the last and final quarter of our game, we could not help but think of this as our last game of the year and cf cur high school lives. As we lined up to take the offensive, memories of our school life passed through our minds, thoughts of our school activities, of our teachers, and of cur many friendships, never to be forgotten. As the minutes became seconds, we thought of how our school days had become merely steps in our lives and with the end of this great game we will take one of the most important of the steps. We could not help but wonder if we were fully prepared to cope with the future that now lies before us. lt's a long pass right down the middle, down to the 43, the 30, a nice gain on that play. lt's first and ten nowfback to the huddle for signals. All those familiar faces gathered together, faces of kids who worked and played together, kids we saw at our Prom, skip day, kids in our senior play. Kids? No, not kids any longer, but the coming generation. -Calling an end-around in the 'form of our ARROWHEAD, we gained the ten-yard line. . After a few more successful plays we are again ready to score, perhaps to go over for the last time. There! lt's over! We've won! But the thoughts going through our minds are not of victory but of sorrow. As we leave our school, we leave the most enjoyable years of our lives to go to find our places in the world. ln the bright days of September, I943, a freshman class entered t I SENIORS .dlniwlx tags pgs. FOOTBALL HIGHLIGHTS Schedule 1945 September 28 VERO BEACH 19, OKEECHOBEE 0 In the season opener the Indians looked good in downing the fighting Catfish I9 to O. Several wrinkles were found in the offense in this game and were quickly ironed out. They have not lost an opener in several years. October 5 VERO BEACH 0: BELLE GLADE 21 In The second game the Indians journeyed to Belle Gade and tasted defeat on The new field of The strong Belle Glade Rams. This was one ofthe strongest teams in The conference. With a big 190 pound fullback and a large line They were held scoreless until the second half. Then They made Three touchdowns and Three conversions to sew up The game. October 12 VERO BEACH 18, MELBOURNE 0 The Vero boys ran The Bulldogs more Than the score indicates in This game. The second Team played most of The game, showing that we had some very able reserves. The line showed up very well with some good block- ing and tackling. October 19 VERO BEACH 14, STUART 0 The Indians went away again for This game and came back this time with a win. It was in This game that they showed a potent passing attack That had thus far n:t been used. After being held scoreless for two quarters they passed for one Touchdown and to set up anot.her. There was also another one scored that was called back for a penalty. October 26 VERO BEACH 77 DEL RAY 0 With three first string boys benched for disciplinary pJrposes and two more sick, the Indians beat a fighting Del Ray team, further proving the point that the reserves were very capable. This was,a game that showed that Vero should have a very good team next year. ' November 2 VERO BEACH 265 TITUSVILLE 7 The Indians were back in full swing for this game and everything seemed to go right. They rode to an easy vic- tory over al Titusville team that was well seasoned with veteran Iettermen. There was excellent blocking that night and consequently the game featured many long runs. Novefber 9 VERO BEACH 125 LAKE WORTH 14 Again the Indians were defeated away from home, although they had yet to lose a game on their own field. This was one of the most exciting games of the season with thirteen points being scored in the first ten plays of the game. Vero didn't get the breaks that night and came back on the short end of a I4-I2 count to a weaker Team. We were leading at the half I2-7. November 16 VERO BEACH 21, COCOA 14 Vero fans had a big scare in this game. Cocoa scored first in the first quarter but then Vero passed and ran to three touchdowns in the second and third quarters. Cocoa scored again in the last quarter against the reserves. This was one of the hardest fought games of the season. November 23 COPENJ November 29 VERO BEACH Op FORT PIERCE 6 This was the big game of the season. The final Thanksgiving Day Classic. It was also the best game the Indians played. Against their arch-rival who was undefeated, the Indians tasted a bitter defeat for the first time on their own field. Although the yardage gained was about even, Vero had about twice as many first downs as Fort Pierce. A fumble on the first play of the game gave the Eagles the ball on Vero's 20. They scored in seven plays for the only tally of the game. The Eagles were on Vero's IO one time later in the game for their only threat while the Indians were on the 3, The IO, and the 7 at different times but could not score. The seniors of the Fighting Vero Beach High School Indians would like To take this opportunity to wish to the team of 1946 all the luck in the world and we know that you will have one of the best teams in the history of V. B. H. S. Football. GOOD LUCK. JOE INGALLS, Guard-A senior, Joe saw quite a bit of play even though it was his first year out. He played a lot of basketball in his four years out and has been to four District Tournaments and to the State once. He came into his own this season being the regular spark of' the team and making All-Conference and District Teams. John Coe came to Vero Beach from Melbourne this year. He was one of the outstanding reasons why Melbourne was one of the three teams to beat Vero last year. He played an excellent brand of ball for the indians in this, his junior year. He should be one of the best men in the conference next year. John is a very good ball handler and floor man. Edwin Prange or Chicken was the tallest member of the squad. His 6' 2 came to very good use under the basket. Prange was high point man for the season, having l75 points. This was Chicken's only year out for basketball and he turned out to be a surprise package. J. VV. Calhoun is only a sophomore and already is recognized as one of the best athletes in school. Jake is a fairly big boy. He stands about 5' ll tall. He is an excellent pivot man with a very good eye for the basket. ln his next two years he will be in line for many honors. Alvin Reeser played his last season this year. He was the other guard along with Hinton. He has a lot of speed which was used to good advantage. He, together with Hinton, made the trip to the State Tournament with the championship team. Wiley Sims was a very reliable player, but being able to practice only part of each day kept Wiley from playing more ball. He has a good eye for the basket and is an adept floor man. The Vero Beach lndian Basketball Team has hung up another good record this year, winning l5 out of l8 games, and it was defeated only once in conference games. They won the first eleven games straight, until they lost to Pahokee by l point in a very questionable decision. ln the last three years the Indians have been defeated by only four teams for a total of 8 games. A record of 53 wins out of ol games is an enviable record indeed. They have been the Indian River Conference champions for three straight years, State champs once, and District champs once.
