They had their ups and downs and remembered only those Highs that kept it all worthwhile. All the girl's can be proud of their efforts this season. Two of the girls, Sheri Hiveley, and Lori Wilson, were voted Honorable Mention to the League ALL-STAR team. On the Varsity squad, there were four seniors who will be missed very much by their other teammates; The Captain, Stella Marxer; Lynette McLean, Bev Grant, and LeeAnn Ashcraft. Although the team didn't make it to state this year, the goal for next season has been set for Number 1. Coach Kathy Howard, Lynnette McLean, Teresa Sharar, Chris Costanzo, Tracy Carroll, LeeAnn Ashcraft, Lori Wilson, Stella Marxer, Sheri Hiveley, Kathi Wilcoxen, Bev Grant, Diane VanWinlde, Julie Carter, Coach DougTesdal, Kneeling, Rhonda Holm. 8 Volleyball 1. V. team and seven girls made up the C team. They were both young teams with a lot of Freshmen. They have a good team spirit and they developed a great potential for working together. The C team, unlike the J. V. team, didn't have the opportunity to show their skills in very many games, although they both showed future ability in the games they played. C Team 11 Loggers Make State Playoffs The year started with high expectations and serious concern about the strength of our league. We knew that Gaston, Warrenton, Knappa and Portland Christian were all going to be very strong. With this in mind, we set our goal to be league champion, and to get to play Regis. We also wanted to prove that the future of the 76 season was a mental problem that we could overcome. We worked very hard on conditioning, helping each other and self-motivation. We developed a team concept. We were also fortunate to have Kevin Murray and Drew Tracy join our team and make excellent contributions. We placed two players on the all-State team, Scott Johnston and Ken Smith; one second all-State, Dean Bernardi. We will remember our team as one of setting high goals and reaching them. It was the best ever for a Vernonia football team. One of our proudest accomplishments was to play the league schedule with only two touchdowns being scored against us. In 12 catagories of statistics the Loggers lead the league in 7; which speaks very well for us, especially when one views the strength of our league. 1. They allowed few teams to score on their fine defense, as you can tell by the scores. Their fine sweeping attack was the main factor to their victories over their opponents, many of which were A A schools. This shows the fine quality that will be on our football team next year. This is Coach McKee's second time with an undefeated record. We are sure our J.V. players were taught many skills which will lead them to many victories in the future. 1. There was Cartoon Day, Future Shock Day, Animal Day, Frizz Out, Grease Back, Make-up Day, and the traditional Blue and Gold Day. Juniors won class sign for the third year in a row. They also won hall decorations, with their theme being, Logger Wars, adapted from the movie, Star Wars. Seniors won the skit and class competition for the week. This years team was relatively inexperienced, but performed well at every level of competition. There were two seniors on the Boys Varsity team; Ron De-Lemos and Brian Wilson. Brian was the team captain and the most consistant place winner. The rest of the team will be returning next year and will continue the winning traditions set by earlier VHS Cross Country teams. Juniors included Jeff McMaster, Pat Lowry, Jon Miller, and George Ray. The Sophomore runner was Karl Garner and Freshmen included Doug Curl, and Brien Weigand. This year the VHS Varsity team made it to State again, and placed a very honorable third place. There weren't enough girls to field a full team but the two girls out were very competitive. Carole DeLemos and Angie Remsen ran well all season and will be the nucleaus of next years girls team. 1. Brian Wilson showed his great running ability by going to state. 2. Memolog Seventy G Seven. We knew it was to be the greatest in Logger history. YEAR II OF YES! -2nd straight boys A Basketball Championship -an undefeated season (25-0) -an extended winning streak of 40 games, second longest in Oregon Prep history It was a talented group of young men who began the 1977-78 season precariously at the Yamhill-Carlton Tournament against AA schools with only one week of practice. The Loggers won their first five games handily, were challenged by Dayton and Wahkiakum during the Christmas holidays and playing good enough to win reached the State Tourney before being again stiffly encountered. Regular season highlights were wins over always tough Dayton, Wahkiakum, and perennial league nemisis Lutheran. Most exciting league encounter prior to State was the first game with Lutheran played at Centennial High School before an excess of one thousand spectators. A Bluejay 2nd quarter lead was overcome when the Loggers sdmied their four-comer offense and led by two points at half-time 31-29. The regular season ended with all twelve team members playing superbly, scoring a record single game high 114 points against a young Warrenton team. The Loggers appeared ready to defend their title. 1. John Beamish and Wes Tadlock come out ready to win. 2. Troy Dunaway concentrates on a lay-in. 3. Loggers make Warrenton shoot from the outside. Varsity Basketball 27 State Champions: 40 Straight Wins!! Chiloquin stayed with the Loggers into the 4th quarter when they were outscored 30-20 by the hot-shooting Vernonians (39 of 62 from the field .629). It was a spectators dream game as the Loggers advanced in the winners bracket with a 91-81 win. Vemonia wanted to play Regis, having lost to them before. Against Regis, the Loggers struggled on both ends of the court. It was Royce Sturdevant's 19 rebounds that kept the Rams at bay while the Loggers played good enough to win. It was a close 69-67 win for the cold weakened defending champions. The Loggers played the first half of the Championship game with Harrisburg much the same as they had played the semifinal game and trailed 31-24 at the half. Coach Curtis' halftime charge was simply: If our effort to repeat as State Champions is to be denied, if our consecutive win string is to end tonite—let it be because they beat us with us playing our best. The second half began slowly for the Loggers with 4:20 to play in the 3rd quarter it was Eagles 39 Loggers 28, then the Champs scored 11 straight—David Holm's jumper, Sturdevant's three point play, Holm's fast break (assist Dunaway), Johnston's bank shot and Holm's layup (3 4 court pass from Weigand). The lead seesawed most of the 4th quarter with Vemonia breaking in front by five. With 1:40 to play, Harrisburg scored its 59th and last point. David Holm's three point play (Dunaway assist) capped a great half of the play for Vemonia. The game ended with the mighty Vemonia Loggers winning a second State Championship 70-59. Gaylen Weigand was named First Team All Tourney, Kevin Murray was named Second Team All Tourney, but many of the Loggers had to be considered. It was a team effort-YES! 1. Platooning is splitting a team into two units that play equal time. This is the system Coach Crow used with our J. V. guys this year. They came out with some very impressive records. One being League Champs and the other being that they took only three time outs in twenty-two games. Along with the records being made, lessons were being learned. Crow states, The team had a problem with self control this year. This is the area I feel we made some big strides in. I thank Mr. Parrow and My Lord for giving me this group of guys to work with. It is an added bonus when the Freshman are successful. This year the Frosh were 11 and 5 with a majority of these wins over AA teams. The success of the Freshman squad resulted from unselfish teamwork on offense and great intensity on defense. The 77-78 Frosh team should make a real contribution to the Vemonia High School program in the near future. Everyone of our Vernonia girl's can say, Great! They feel good about their team and good about themselves, because everytime they stepped out on that floor, whether they were winning, or losing, they were giving 100% mentally, and physically. The old phrase, Whether you win or lose, doesn't matter, it's how you play the game that counts. This isn't just a dumb phrase, but words to live by. All of our girl's also know that losing isn't going to be a habit, because next year we're coming back with better skills, more determination, and a darn the torpedoes; full speed ahead, attitude. It may take us a few years to get to state, but by The Loggers Beard, we'll get there. When we lose a game, we don't cry about it, we just chalk it up to past history and set out to make a little history of our own. Girl's Basketball 33 Varsity Rally 1 The Varsity Rally; Leeann, Mary, Stella, Teri, Chris, and Marcie, have many wonderful memories to reflect on from this year of cheerleading. The cheerleading system was changed from past years at V.H.S. Six girls were chosen to cheer for both the football and basketball seasons. The squad was in favor of this system. We know our Basketball guys will go back to state, so our main goal is to get out stuff together so we can win 1 Rally, was quoted by Chris East. They did it; March 4th, the first in the History of V.H.S. Special thanks to our four Seniors whose talent will long be remembered. We'd like to thank them all for those hours of sweat and runned nylons they've given V.H.S. l 1. We are proud of who we are! J.V.; Frosh Have Great Style- We had five spirited J.V. Cheerleaders this year. They were: Michele, Laura, Kathi, Janice, and Julie Carter (not pictured). The main goal for the squad was to get more people to come to the J.V. games. They tried being the best cheerleaders possible. They should all feel a sense of accomplishment! One of the neatest of the new changes was the added freshman squad. Kim, Julie, and Wendy were together in cheering their 7th and 8th grade years. Debbei joined the group her 8th grade year. This year Carol was added to the group. These girls seemed to do a very good job of reinforcing each others spirits at the right time. Together they show real skill and promise for an active future. 3 1. J.V. Squad: Laura Eager, Kathi Wilcoxen, Janice Hopkins, Michele Elkins. 2. Dance Tearn 37 Wrestlers Grasp Big Victories The goals set for the wrestling team this year were to be competitive in the league and place high in the District Tournament. They were not only competitive the year through, but ended up as the District dual meet Co-Champions. They placed second behind Corbett at the District meet, with every weight catagory filled and no one placing below fourth place. Out of these place winners, six qualified for State. Jeff McMaster and Tim McLeod both took honorable fifth places. The skilled wrestlers returning next year will certainly miss this years five graduating seniors, Jim Wright, Ron Delemos, Jerry Kinney, Jeff Parker, and TWO 1 time District and State Champion, also the team captain and Most Valuable Wrestler, Dean Bemardi. LEAGUE DUEL MEET RECORD VHS 33 Warrenton 38 VHS 37 Corbett 34 VHS 61 Knappa 12 VHS 46 Lutheran 21 5 40 Wrestling 3 Track . . . Definitely A “Yes” Season 42 Track Rick Curl, Electronic and Trade Show Transportation Specialist, Vernonia, Or. The 1978 track season proved to be very successful for both boys and girls. The boy trackers finished first in league, and first in district competition; while the girls finished third in league, and third at district. Nine athletes qualified for state from the district meet: the 400 meter relay team (Dennis Larson, Tim McLeod, Mike Hiveley, David Holm), the mile relay team (Karl Garner, Dennis Larson, Tony Smith, Mike Hiveley), David Holm and Dennis Larson in the 100 and 200, Brian Wilson in the 3,000, Mike Harrison in the shot put, and Sheri Hiveley in the Javelin. The state track meet, held at Lewis Clark on May 19 and 20, proved to be another good meet for the 400 meter relay team as they placed 6th in the state with a sizzling time of 45.4 seconds. Sheri Hiveley was the other point getter at state with a toss of 119 ft. for 6th place. All of the running events were measured in metric distances this year for the first time, so all events will become school records for metric purposes. The 400 meter relay teams time of 45.4 was not only a school metric record, but if converted to yards, would be a school yardage record (45.6). Mike Hiveley set a school record in the triple jump at 41 ft. 4 in. at the leauge meet in St. Helens. Turn-out for the season was good with 25 boys, and 16 girls participating. Mel Nice coached the distance runners and hurdlers; Ron Remsen handled the sprinters, relays, long jump, and triple jump; while Terry Nimz took charge of the shot put, discus, javelin, high jump, and pole vault. Boys and girls were combined this year for training purposes. With most athletes returning, next year should prove to be successful for V.H. S. 1. Principal's Awards Golf Goes To 3-Way Meets This year the format of league matches was changed from duel matches to three-way meets. Vernonia placed 1st at Clatskanie and Scap-pose, 2nd at Dayton and 3rd at Tillamook. The highlight of this years team was winning the Second Annual Vernonia Invitational by one stroke over Dayton. In this tournament Stewart Grady won medalist honors for the second straight year. District was played at Forest Hills Golf Course in Cornelius. Vernonia placed fourth, eight strokes back of second place Dayton, and Twenty-eight strokes back of the winners, Seaside. Among the low individuals, Dwayne Bates placed 5th and earned a position in the all-district team. Dwayne Bates won the Outstanding Golf Award” for his consistant play, while Curt Marxer won the Most Improved Golfer. This years golf team, as pictured. Faculty Adds To Staff This year at Vernonia High School the faculty added five new members to its family. Mr. Tesdal taught the ever interesting fundamentals of art, Mr. Ramme taught the bending and twisting of medals and Mr. Mechling kept the students on their toes when he taught the baffling functions of mathematics. Mrs. Holsey and Mrs. Grady were added to the Special Ed department and Ms. Thompson is the new librarian. They had a pie eating contest during homecoming, a plant raffle, a bake sale, sold logger pens, and had six dances. They feel very proud and privileged to say that they are the richest class in the high school. In addition to this they took 1st in the homecoming sign for the 3rd year in a row and they placed 2nd on the hall decorations. The class of '79 was helped greatly by Kathy Jackson as President, Deanna Walker as Vice President, Lori Wilson as Secretary, Jeff McMasters as Treasurer, Sandi Green as Student Council Representative, and Scott Johnston as St. at Arms. Mrs. Marsha Hager helped them through the tight spots as their advisor. 56 Junior Class Ruby Alford Dwayne Bates Cindy Brewer Pete Brewer Tracy Carroll Jacque Clark Tim Clason Chris Costanzo Helen Curtis Venetia Daughtry Duane Davis Chris East Janet Eide Dan Folnsbee Sandi Green Darrel Gw in Ed Hammerberg Junior Class 57 JM 1 1. Student Council Rep. Julie Carter was the one with the ear to ear smile and twinkling eyes. Class treasurer, Michele Elkins was a true Californian who brought the sunshine with her. Secretary Sheri Hiveley was the patriotic, Super Soph, and really a super Super Person. Vice president Kala Sword was a very conscientous person who liked to do things right the first time. President Terry Bodenhamer was the lady in charge, simply a Super Gal. She carried out the presidents duties to the fullest, organizing, planning, doing, working, the whole year long. Last, but not least, there was the nine year Veteran class advisor, Cris Boyle: Always behind the scenes pushing for organization, he being a good example. With a staff of officers like those, no one could doubt that the class of '80 really shared true friendship. l 4 Sophomores Rena Andrus Robert Argue Dawn Bemardi Terry Bodenhamer John Budge Julie Carter David Cheeks Renee Coe Chris Cota Jeff Cutright Vicki Delemos Marvin Dennis James Dotter Laura Eager Brian Eckland Jeanine Eide Michele Elkins Scott Fleck Karl Garner Vince Grau Fred Grebenc Paul Hager Michael Hanson Mike Harrison Jerry Heifer Sheri Hiveley Rhonda Holm Janice Hopkins David Jackson Bill Kinney Sophomores 61 Scott Lamping Dennis Larson Ron Lunsford Tim McLeod Curt Marxer Monty Morford Sheryl Norton Steve Osgood Gary Ragner Venita Richardson Steve Roberts Larry Sauer Carla Selanders Teresa Sharar Jim Smiley Marla Smith Tony Smith Gary Sutherlin Kala Sword Dennis Thomason Suzie Tippy Cathy Titus Jessie Titus Georgette Vigil Patty Whitlow Kathi Wilcoxen Robin Wilkerson Kim Wright Tony Zeigler Not Pictured Charles Atkeson 62 Sophomores 1 1. The Class of '81 was a well-rounded group of freshmen. Athletically the freshmen teams performed very well, but the freshmen also adapted academically. Along with learning to cope with the difficulties that all Logger freshmen face, students still have one important problem to face; What can they do to be knowledgeable sophomores and then distinctive upperclassmen? 2 5 1. The Band and Chorus had uniforms! This created the spirit of unity they were looking for. The quality of sound produced at the Chorus Festival in Warrenton, sent our singers home with a Superior rating. The Festival for the Band students was held in Knappa. They too, floated home on a cloud of Superior ity. Both groups did a great deal of work this year. A fifteen minute rock Cantata entitled, The Creation, was produced by the Chorus. The Band played their super pep music at all Foot- and Basketball games, along with the State Tournament in Pendleton. Many thanks go to Mr. Ward Nelson for being a Superior director and friend 1. That activity along with others was all the idea of the 1977-78 Student Council. The Student Council passed every petition and made three special visitations to different schools in our league to study school governments. The National Honor Society is an organization based on service. Teachers judged all of their students in the areas of Character, Scholarship (GPA), Service and Leadership. By this process, seven new members were chosen into the Society this year. The Lettermen Club is made up of both young men and women athletes who've earned a Varsity Letter. Student Council NHS Lettermen 71 Art, Journalism, And Yearbook The art classes this year were taught by a new teacher to our school, Mr. Doug Tesdal, from Athena, Oregon. The classes were divided into two general art classes and one advanced art class. In advanced art they divided their learning projects into quarters. They were pottery, calligraphy, painting and stained glass. In general art they covered more techniques but didn't spend as much time on them as advanced art did. In addition to what advanced art covered they spent the year learning batik (a fabric design with wax), ink drawing, and Chinese water color. Mr. Tesdal thinks that the classes were especially good this year, they caught on really fast and learned techniques by following his motto that you'll never learn until you try. For the third straight year the Journalism and Yearbook staffs shared seventh period in the typing room. An invisible wall was put up to prevent most of the confusion that the two classes could make. Mrs. Alvilda Hearing was advisor of the Timberline staff and has been since it was reestablished. The staff did an excellent job this year making the best newspaper a journalist could hope for. With much hard work and a little snooping and investigation, they put out a Timberline every month, with a total of eight issues. The Yearbook staff this year started completely new with a brand new staff, new editor, new publisher, and new photographer. The only thing holding them together was Mr. Ron Remsen, the advisor who kept the staff going to meet their deadlines. The Menolog staff sincerely hopes you will enjoy this annual as much as they enjoyed the experience of putting it together for you. 2 6 7 8 1. Mrs. Hearing tells Stella what must be done for the next deadline. 8. Mr. Tesdal can t resist the chance to work with the pottery himself. Art, Journalism, Yearbook 73 P.E., Math And Science Offer Variety 74 The math classes this year could not have been more educational as well as humerous, for they were taught by a new teacher, Mr. Mike Mechling and Mr. Mike McKee. Mr. Mechling taught all math subjects except General Math taught by Mr. McKee along with the ever popular subjects of General Science, Chemistry, and Physics. Mr. Melvin Nice took over the Biology department. He also taught boy's PE and Health. Ms. Marsha Hager taught girl's PE and Health, and Mr. Gordon Crows-ton taught PE this year. 4 1. Senior English was taught by Mrs. Alvilda Hearing, Junior and Sophomore English by Mr. Chris Boyle, (serving his last year before a prolonged vacation), and Frosh. English taught by Ms. Karen Alvstad. Ms. Alvstad also taught French I through IV. French classes were for students who wanted to take an active interest in a language and some of its cultural background. It required regular and cafeful study outside of class. This years Speech class consisted of sixteen Juniors and Seniors, four of whom participated in the annual Speech Festival. Jacque Clark, Chris East, Kathy Jackson, and Diane Olson all received Superior ratings. 2 1. Ms. Alvstad speaks in French to her students. 2. Mr. Curtis taught how the U.S. runs their government in U.S. governments, and taught the past history of the country in U.S. history. Many students are now more prepared for coping with office work they may face in the future since taking typing, bookkeeping, and office practice, taught by Mr. Remsen. Two periods of typing were taught by Mrs. Hager. 1. Normand Mueller still seems to have fun even while typing. 2. Cindy and Mary add spice to what would be another boring office practice day. 3. A Benefit To Students There were a variety of courses offered in the Home Ec department this year. They were Single Survival, Home Ec I II, and Advanced Home Ec. These courses did not just offer cooking and sewing; they got into areas such as home management, child development and housing. Home Ec II and Adv. Home Ec completed a field test that was sent from Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. The test was based on options for young rural women and planning their lives. V. H. S. was picked along with 10 other schools across the United States to try this course. Industrial Arts classes were instructed by Bill Ramme, mechanics, Jerry Vandehey, woodshop and medals, and Terry Nimz, drafting and cabinet making. The students in these classes produced many projects of which some were displayed in the Spring Concert and Art Show. Some projects displayed were end tables, coffee tables, cabinets, cedar chests and one skate board. All in all, there were many great projects completed. 1. Shelli Smiley separates eggs to prepare for her perfect meringue. 2. Tracy Carroll and Patti Wood try to figure out how the fly got in their sauce. 3. A time we have looked forward to for so many years. We eagerly anticipated this year, but doubts arose. Those doubts were put aside, because there were too many other plans to make and goals to set. The class of 78 are all winners. But it was not being a winner and finally reaching the goal that really mattered. It was the experience we gained and the lessons we learned on the way up, that made all the difference in the outcome of our year. We had a determination that made this year the best one yet! The occassion may seem sad, but it was not; it was full of laughter, excellent food, and friends. The evening began with the invocation given by Mary Etheridge. Then the feast started! There was plenty of fried chicken, baked potatoes, and french rolls, plus the carrot and celery sticks, pickles and olives that everyone munched on before, during and after the meal. Dinner ended with cake and ice cream. After the meal LeeAnn Ashcraft, Master of Ceremonies, introduced Superintendent Darrold Proehl. Mr. Proehl gave an appropriate speech and introduced the school board members. Next came the Class History written by Royce Sturdevant and read by Brian Wilson. The laughter soon began when Teri Bellingham read the Class Wills, and the Seniors especially enjoyed the Class Prophecies read by Mary Etheridge and written by Dunaway and Parker Productions. The evening ended with an exceptionally nice speech by Principal Arthur Parrow giving advice, laughter, and a farewell to the Seniors of 1978. Seniors Achieve Goals At Graduation For every true student there is only one day in their life that they can truly celebrate a victory. That day comes when the student finally guaduates from high school. At VHS, this happened for 55 students on May 25, in the high school gym. The Seniors of 1978 were full of anticipation, hoping for the ceremony to just hurry up and get over with. Yet a little sad because they all knew that things would never be like they were at Vernonia High again. The class decided to enter in a slow walk to the traditional Pomp and Circumstance. There were no guest speakers, only the honor speakers Chong Tassin and Mary Etheridge. The top five honor students were Chong Tassin, Troy Dunaway, Mary Etheridge, Royce Sturdevant, and Joe Banzer, respectively. The Senior cup this year went to Mary Etheridge, and the McCrae Award went to Michele Fuller. The VEA and OSEA Scholarship went to Chong Tassin and Royce Sturdevant, and Mary Etheridge received a $2,000 scholarship for over a 4 year period of time. Brian Wilson received the Jaycee's Scholarship. For the new Vernonia Alumni Scholarship Troy Dunaway received the first amount. Frank Hill was awarded the John Yadon Memorial. The class presented the remaining amount of money from their treasurey to the Vernonia Alumni Fund. The class presented Mrs. Hearing with a bouquet of flowers and a nightgown. The class of '78 moto was I don't know where I'm going, but I'm on my way by Carl Sandburg. The class flower was blue tipped carnations, and their colors were dark blue and silver. Graduation was a night that these Seniors will long remember, because to them VHS was a school worth many memories. 1. Mr. Ward Nelson directs the VHS Band at Graduation. 2.
