The school year of 1971-72 began August 30 - much to the dismay of all. Football season came and went; the Loggers didn’t acquire the most fantastic record, but spirit remained strong. Cross country was especially good this year - with a bus load of students attending the district meet as spectators. Then there were nine-weeks tests and Thanksgiving vacation. December was highlighted by the Loggers’ championship at the Concordia Tourney and by Christmas vacation. With the new year came more basketball, semesters, and the worst flood in over fifty years. Basketball dominated the scene until after spring vacation. The Loggers climaxed their season with a trip to the Class A State Basketball Tournament in Pendleton. The coming of April meant only two more months of school, and the calendar was filled with things to do. Then it was May. Seniors graduated on May 26th with a roomful of questioning and hopeful people. The underclassmen slaved through semesters, and finally, on June 1, school was out. A year of learning. A year of memories. Each moment of that year was unique; it will never be repeated. It is the hope of the staff that a portion of those memories can be captured in the Memolog of 1972. 3 The days that make us happy make us wise. The Loggers completed preseason play defeating host Concordia Lutheran in OT 58-56 for the Holiday Classic and upsetting AAA Evergreen (Wn.) 72-68 in the Banks Tourney. The pre-season record was five wins and three losses. League play against all new opponents except for Warrenton began in January. First half ended with the local roundballers leading 6-1, losing only at Warrenton. Second half play was indentical in record with Vernonia reversing its loss to the Warriors and being upset at Corbett after the league title had been won. The Loggers then went on to beat J.F. Kennedy and neighbor Jewell at the regionals, thus qualifying for the state Class A playoffs. State play found VHS paired with No. 1 ranked Waldport. The locals trailed three quarters by as much as twenty points before uniting and pulling the upset of the tourney, 60-55. Unfortunately, the Loggers dropped the second game to Pilot Rock 77-79 in OT, and the third place title to McEwen also by two points. The Loggers' championship effort provided many outstanding moments for the loyal Vernonia followers. 46 Our varsity basketball cheerleaders were hard-working, exuberant girls. Apart from leading yells, they also performed dance routines to popular music, painted signs, and planned pep assemblies. They worked faithfully, and their enthusiasm seemed to rub off on others, for the spectators were the most spirited ever.
