These are the years of wistful-eyed beings with tender dreams, but youth is brutal as well as tender, and youth is reality as well as a dream. A flower blooms and fades and blows away — and blooms again, according to the season; and in a like manner, youth exists from spring to spring, for to everything there is a time. Besides playing at the football and basketball games, the band put on numerous concerts, among them the Popcorn Concert in February and the Spring Concert and Art Show in April. Intent on their music, goofing around at a game, playing at concerts, these students under the supervision of their advisor, Mr. Ward Nelson, helped make up the VHS band for 1970-71. 68 Music in May: Linda Borst and Julie Spitzer Chorus Entertains at Concerts 1971 was a year of concerts for the VHS Chorus. Along with hosting the Columbia County Choral Festival, chorus members sang in a special Christmas program held at the Christian Church, and helped put on the Thanksgiving Assembly, Popcorn and Spring Concerts. 69 Paul Bunyan sponsored many fine service projects this year. The bonfire was again the job of Paul Bunyan, and they had a large one despite its burning one week prior to Homecoming. The group sponsored a Senior-Faculty game in March with proceeds going to playground equipment. A donkey basketball game was held to benefit the Homer Fuller Fund. Paul Bunyan SDonsors Service Beach Trip and Taco Feed Highlight Year for F. T. A. Steve and Mr. Boyle Steve’s family enjoys taco feed. Marilyn serves up tacos. Until April, FTA was a very small group of 10 members. Then, a membership drive was begun and at the end of May, FTA had added 15 new members. Towards the end of April, FTA sponsored a taco feed, primarily to get out of debt and pay for this page in the Memolog. Everyone was surprised with the excellent turnout and a big profit of $60. For fun, FTA members went on an outing to the beach armed with sun tan lotion and swim suits, but this wishful thinking was to no avail, unless there is such a thing as fog-burn. Nevertheless, everyone had a good time. Mary Steele, Cita Vigil, Gloria Ashford, Sandi Stockwell, and Julie Klein were the football cheerleaders this year. They innovated many new ideas for the season and aroused the spirit of VHS students at the games. Marilyn Julie Linda Borst, Jackie Eide, and Penny Hamilton were the cheerleaders for the wrestling team. Although it is not a popular sport, wrestling involves a lot of hard work and skill. These girls, under the supervision of their coach Miss Jackie Maier, were the members of G.A.A. track team for the 1971 spring season. Although the season was unsuccessful pointwise, the girls enjoyed all the fun, fellowship, and exercise the sport allows. 79 Language Club Holds Playnights Under the direction of Spanish and French teacher Mrs. Fran Carson, the Language Club enjoyed its first year of being Language Club at VHS. Last year, the club was for French students only, as Spanish was not given. The club held several popular playnights, including one at Christmas, and wrote to pen pals from various foreign countries. A foreign foods dinner was held in May at which were served foods from France and Spain, all prepared by the students, Mrs. Carson, and Mrs. Haverland. To provide cultural enrichment for the student body as a whole, the club sponsored two foreign film festivals in the spring at which different members of the school and community showed slides of Europe and other places where they had been. Each day the administration strives to make VHS a better place in which students can become the kind of men and women the world needs. They are the busiest Loggers because of the many school functions which require their presence.
