A school building is constructed of steel and cement, strong and permanent, but it is designed to accomodate an ever-changing flow of students. Year after year, buses empty their loads each morning, and people stream in waves into the hallways and classrooms. To the rhythm of bells, tides of people wash in and out of the rooms and corridors and finally back to the buses, leaving the building empty. Carl Sandburg in his poem Skyscraper says Is is the 4 Tie me warrior down, sport. . . the Spirit Takes men and women hoys and girls so poured in and out all day that give the building a soul of dreams and thoughts and memories As each individual forms a part of the mass, so each personality contributes to the whole of Vernonia's soul--that abstract thing we call school SPIRIT. Soon we, the class of 1970, will take our individual dreams, thoughts, and memories, many of which were molded in these halls and rooms. All Stand for the Mighty . . . Sports 7 Back Row L. to R. R. Activities for the band started last September, with their music for home football games and continued on through the year entertaining at Varsity basketball games. In December, the band played at the Christmas assembly; during February the Pops Concert; and in April, they took part in the annual Spring Concert. Debbie Curl and Brenda Armstrong were sent to Music in May at Forest Grove from our band. The Chorus, under the direction of Mr. Ward Nelson, gave expert performances at several top ranking music and school events this season. Among these were the Christmas assembly in December, the Pops Concert, their rendition for the Cowapa League Choral Festival at Scappoose, and at the Spring Concert in April. A special group called The Triple Trio was chosen by their conductor to entertain at local social functions. NHS, Our Honor Students The National Honor Society is a service organization, devoted to helping the community. This year under their new advisor, Mrs. Bol-meier, NHS prospered and grew. Memolog Captures Year’s Highlights Time, Patience, Work and Loads of Perseverance During the 1969-70 school year, the Memo-log staff worked very hard under editor, Irene Birkenfeld. Staff editors and their assistants worked many long and hard hours slaving over lay-outs and writing copy. This year, Memolog sponsored many moneymaking projects, such as cake raffles and a dance, all of which have been a definite success. The Memolog staff works hard all year to provide entertainment for the student body through the annual yearbook. 65 What's so interesting? Our advisor, Mr. Nelson, in one of his BETTER moods!
