MEMOLOG 1969 VERNONIA HIGH SCHOOL VERNONIA, OREGON EDITOR, MARY BRUN8MAN SENIOR ASSISTANT EDITOR, KATHY HENDERSON JUNIOR ASSISTANT EDITOR, GWEN PERSYN ADVISOR, WARD NELSON NOTHING 18 A WASTE THAT MAKES A MEMORY We the students of Vernonia High School would like to dedicate the 1968-69 yearbook to the memories of Sally Knowlton and Albert Bunsman, who were killed in a car accident on November 25, 1969. Sally and Albert were graduates of the 1967 class. EACH GOLDEN FRIEND I HAVE KNOWN ... 18 LIKE A GUIDING STAR... THAT LEADS ME THROUGH THE YESTERYEARS ... OF PLACES NEAR AND FAR ... THE LARGE AND LITTLE CITIES AND ... THE STREETS OF LONG AGO . .. WHERE LIFE WAS MERELY PART OF ALL ... THE WINDS THAT USED TO BLOW ... EACH HELPING HAND AND LOVING SMILE... IS LIKE A SONG OF OLD ... IMBUED WITH ALL THE MELODY... I WISH THAT I COULD HOLD .. . AND THOUGH THE HOURS STILL TO COME ... MAY BE A MILLION MORE ... I DREAM ABOUT THE HAPPINESS ... THAT FILLED MY HEART BEFORE ... I SEE THE FACES YOUNG AND BRIGHT ... THAT MEANT SO MUCH TO ME ... AND THEIR ENDEARING FRIENDSHIP... MY FONDEST MEMORY. 2 Memories are golden . . . This annual will serve as a hallway through which memories will pass . . . memories of the students, the faculty, and the administrators . . . those who give significance to Vernonia High. 4 Happiness is found in simple things ... a sparkling laugh, a refreshing tear, an understanding smile . . . Living demands an involvement with which we mix individual vitality, enthusiasm, and initiative into a happi ness which fills the lives of us all. 5 E □ F T Ty ldGCER® TABLE OF CONTENTS FACULTY........................... 7 CLASSES...........................13 ORGANIZATIONS.....................27 SPORTS............................47 ACTIVITIES........................71 ADS...............................91 6 FACULTY Hard-working and devoted . . . active in extracurricular doings . . . sometimes criticized, sometimes lauded . . . just . . . representing the authority to the wayward, the key to the answers for the inquisitive . . . policymakers . . . enforcers of rules. . . counseling the troubled and the troublemakers . . . friends . . . educators . . . busy but never too busy to help a student . . . For individualism is realized Through a person's ability To stand upright in the midst Of other strong individuals. 27 BAND During our school year, the Vernonia Band was very busy putting on concerts and supporting our football and basketball teams. The last two weeks of school were devoted to graduation. Mr. Kelson, the director, worked hard to make the band a success. The Pep Band plays a song during a game. Fay Russell, Dan Hearing, Zenda Ellis, and Chris Smith went to Music in May. VHS's Chorus enjoyed a busy year, performing at Thanksgiving, Christmas, the Pops Concert, the Spring Concert, Baccalaureate, as well as several grade school concerts, and the Cowapa League Choral Festival at Rainier. 29 STUDENT COUNCIL Student Council was responsible for setting policy, reaching decisions, and generally guiding the direction for student activities at VHS. The energetic and friendly officers for 1968-69 were Dado Briones, president; Zenda Ellis, first vice-president; Alan Johnston, second vice-president; Joyce Knowlton, secretary; Mary Brunsman, treasurer; and Paul Nelson, manager. They put on the Homecoming Dance and the Swamp Stomp. They also sponsored a carwash and a bake sale. Many of the members joined the volleyball and basketball teams and track. Shari Nightwine presided over the group. 34 35 SWAMP STOMP Vernonia was fortunate this year in having an enthusiastic, interested group of volleyball players. Although not spectacular record-wise, the season nevertheless was an enjoyable and worthwhile one for all involved. 36 That VHS has a most active girls' sports program is seen in the popularity of girls' basketball. 37 Drill Team members, the V-Hi's, performed at several basketball games and at the Cowapa League playoffs. Here, they wait with anticipation before the start of a half-time show. 38 FTA Joyce and Carol are working hard on their F. T. A. officers lounging in the lounge. F. T. Mr. Kabler was advisor. 40 FFA - one of VHS's largest and most active groups. QCIENCE CLUB Two young Carnival-goers express amazement at the Science Club’s unusual booth. 41 Although not very bright looking, N. H.S. officers capably led their club this year. During an impressive ceremony, new members were tapped. 42 YOUTH 43 FELLOWSHIP 44 46 SPORTS WE REMEMBER SPORTS . . . . . . the high spots and the low spots, the wins and the losses, the spirited crowds being led on by enthusiastic cheerleaders, the sunny days and the gloomy ones, the crowded gymnasiums, the touchdowns, field goals, foul shots, the sound of the gun and the finish . . . 47 The 1968 Varsity Football Team poses to have its picture taken. Mike Busch was the outstanding defensive guard and made a great contribution to his team. Steve Hanson was a tough all-league tackle, and Gary Davis was elected to the first all-league team and was an alternate to the Shrine game in Pendleton. The prowess of these and many other players made for an exciting season. 50 CHEERLEADERS Give 'em the ax WHERE? Clap-Your-Hands After an exciting season, the Logger cagers went on to defeat Ranier at Sunset Hugh School, thus claiming the Cowapa League championship, and being the first Vernonia .team in many, many years to attend the state A-2 playoffs at Coos Bay. 55 J.V. So do Miss Peterson and Sue as they carry out their sentence. 73 Much hard work and preparation went into the senior's homecoming skit, portraying school spirit through the ages. Their effort paid off as the seniors took first place. nOKCCi. 74 Matt Koch and Paul Nelson receive their awards as the Most Valuable Players of the Homecoming Game. Senior Princess Terry Hepler was crowned queen. The Senior Banquet was held this year at the Odd Fellows Lodge, and was sponsored by the American Legion. After the delicious dinner, Carol, Judi, and Marci read the Class Prophecy, History, and Will. President Dan Hearing, acting as emcee, then introduced Mr. Proehl and Mr. Parrow, who each gave a short speech. 78 The theme of the Junior-Senior Prom this year was Stardust. The juniors worked hard on getting the decorations finished. The five princesses chosen were Christy Hanson, Marci Hendricks, Terry Hepler, Joyce Knowlton, and Debbie Miller. Marci was crowned queen by Steve Hanson, next year's Student Body President. 79 80 THANKSGIVING ASSEMBLY School will do it to you Now I lay me down to every time. sleep. 81 STUDENT BODY CARNIVAL ATTRACTS LARGE. FUN-LOVING CROWD 83 FOREIGN STUDENTS SPONSOR EXCHANGE ASSEMBLY Four foreign exchange students, two from South America, one from England, and one from Greenland entertained VHS students during a special assembly featuring dancing, singing, and piano playing. Following the assembly, the students participated in various classes where they answered questions posed by Vernonia students. The entire day's activities were very rewarding experiences for all concerned. 84 VH8 SAYS FAREWELL TO MR. McENTIRE Always a strong supporter of school activities, Mr. McHntire and his wife Ann try their luck at the bingo game during the school carnival. Remarking that Forty is a nice, round number (and he should know!), Mr. Harold McEntire thus ended his forty-year career as a teacher at Vernonia High. During those years he served in a number of capacities, but he preferred teaching, and he spent most of his time initiating VHS students into the mysteries of algebra, geometry, and trig. Besides teaching, he was also known to wield a wicked golf club and a mean fishing pole. Most of all, however, everyone will remember him for his friendly grin and pleasant personality. He will always be a part of Vernonia High School. 85 ANGELO Friendly to all. . . witty . . . outspoken . . . versatile . . . exhibiting a surprising command of the English language . . . very intelligent . . . possessing a probing mind. Whether remembered best as a would-be football player, as a musician, as a cheerleader, as an interesting speaker, as an actor in several skits, or simply as a friend, VHS students and the people of Vernonia will always have a fond memory of Angelo Gnadinger. 86 GRADUATION Honor speakers at graduation were Zenda Ellis, Dado Briones, and Angelo Gnadinger, who presented the school with a flag of his country. Guest Speaker was Kirby Brumfield, a television personality. Mike Busch and Kevin Forney escorted Mrs. Hearing to the platform where she was presented with a bouquet of yellow roses. Dan Hearing, as class president, then presented Mr. Parrow with the class gift of four benches to be placed in front of the high school. 88 Joyce, Kathie, and Doug receive the PTA award, PHO award, and Wallace McCrae award.
