Dedlcutlon We the staff of the Memolog, hereby dedlcate th1s ed1t1on of the Memolog to the Sp1r1t of the Old and New Vernon1a Th1s ded1cat1on 1S ln accord w1th the Centennlal wh1ch Ore gon IS now celebrat1ng As Vernon1a began to be a real communlty about 1885, the early people 1n th1s glo r1ous valley began to have an 1nterest 1n bu11d1ng a town Wh1Ch they could be proud of The f1rst step, obv1ous1y was to name It Oz1as Cherrlngton, the f1rst school teacher, w1shed to name the townsh1p Vernon1a after h1s daughter 1n 0h1o and others expressed a des1re to name It Auburn A comprom1se evolved and the town was Vernon1a 1n the Auburn precmct Th1s was later corrected to Vernon1a prec1nct by the court Between 1877 and 1879, Vernon1a establ1shed a post Off1C9 A very up to date process brought ma1l v1a Joe Campbell from St Helens to the home of the postmaster, Dav1d Baker 1n Vernon1a The church entered Vernon1a 1n the form of Charles M Plowman a Unlted Brethern m1n1ster, who settled 1n the valley 1n 1877 Plowman had no organ1zed church but held prayer meetmgs at local homes on Sunday Dur1ng the per1od between 1875 and 1890 Vernon1a boomed A ra1lroad surveyed through Vernon1a and a small sawm1ll was bu1lt All lots 1n the townsh1p were taken and many stores erected A weekly newspaper The Nehalem Journal, was publ1shed and the outlook was br1ght seemed very dark and the town was nearly deserted About 1912 rumors of a ra1lroad cropped up aga1n and Vernon1a began to perk up In sp1te of the rumors the ra1lroad d1d not come unt1l 1922 In 1924, the Oregon Amerlcan Lumber M111 began product1on 10 Vernon1a It was one of the blggest m1lls of 1tS type 1n the world at that t1me Because of a decl1ne 1n pro ductlon the m1ll was forced to close down 1n 1957 Early 1n the 20's the old hlgh school was bu1lt so that the students could be moved out of the grade school Students IH the early classes were requ1red to take bas1ca1ly the same subjects we are w1th the add1t1on of a forelgn language P E was not requ1red and no clubs but the Span1sh Club were sponsored by the school Both boys and g1rls had league basketball teams Football and track were excluswely for the boys but as now, they had the1r tres ch1c, glamorous cheerleaders to take the 11me l1ght The f1rst annual was the Verh1an It began publ1cat1on durlng the 20's About m1dway through the 30's the name was changed to the Memolog and It IS as Memolog that lt IS st1ll publ1shed The followlng IS quoted from an art1cle wh1ch appeared 10 the Nehalem Journal of December 30 1890 It stated A reason for the rap1d advancement of Vernon1a IS the f1rm and unshaken conf1dence the people have 1n her future It IS conf1dence well placed and hope well founded lt 1S Just as hard to keep a good town down as It 1S to suppress rebell1on 1n Central Amerlca It cont1nues to bob up serenely atta1n1ng a more alt1tud1nous pos1t1on w1th each SUCCGSSIVB bob It IS our bel1ef that Vernon1a 1S cont1nu1ng to 'bob up serenely ' and wlll keep on bob b1ng That 1S why we ded1cated th1s annual to the Sp1r1t of the Old and New Vernon1a 2 O I , . . . . . . . , . . - . . . , .
