Homer F. The People in the News February 26, 1969 PROPHECy This week the first rocket ship of colonists shoots its way toward Mars where they will settle and build their homes. This is a very remarkable achievement when one considers that 15 or even 10 years ago man had not ventured into space. The great scientist, Pat Wells, worked on designs for rocket ships for 6 years before the first tests were made. Plans for this colony began when it was found that Mars could be inhabited. The first step was to send builders to set up power and manufacturing plants and other buildings. Dick Gwin, engineer and Pres, of the Quick Rising Construction Co. , supervised the hundreds of workers and also the other experts: Marylyn Good, the architect who designed the first 10 skyscrapers in Vernonia, David Strong, the electrician who invented the Easy Move cordless floor lamp, and Alice Steers, agriculturist, who with the help of Patsy King, landscape artist, laid out the orchards, gardens, and lawns. While these workers prepared the colony for habitation, the atomic rocket ship was built and people from all over the world came to sign for the trip. Nancy Lee Akers pilots the ship. She is the famous jet pilot who was the first to fly from New York to Los Angeles and get there before she started. She decided in her youth to become a pilot because her red hair would look its best with the blue sky as its back-round. There will be an experienced politician to head the government of the colony. June Cunningham, governor of Oregon, resigned and consented to become the governor of Mars. The first to sign up was Mr. Albert Fuller who is a very successful real estate salesman and of course he sees opportunities for further success in the colonization. From Vernonia, Oregon came the Mademoiselles Jeannette Dass and Annette Ortfner, who operate a beauty salon and charm school. The ladies are going to Mars as the people in Vernonia are all charming and beautiful so they couldn't get any customers. Several of the colonists are retiring from the entertainment world to become farmers of factory workers on Mars. Letha Hamilton, conductor of the Navy Band, gave up her position because; quote, Even though I like the sailors very much, I am unable to continue. The public cannot get used to a woman leading this traditional group. Lily (Dorothy) Lyles' career as a bubble dancer ended when the bubble accidently burst to reveal her in jeans and an old jacket instead of the usual costume. Such incidents drive customers away. Mar-garite Brissette, star of the recent Broadway hit, Your Eyes are This page is sponsored by BRUNSMAN HARDWARE AND ELECTRIC Phophecy (con't) Pools, and Your Teeth, Stars, and her husband, Cluck Gobble, have decided to start a chicken farm. Another couple who plan to farm is Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Thomas. They are newlyweds. Mrs. Thomas, the former Pat Stiff, was engaged to Earl Ray, the famous explorer, for 15 years while he tramped the Antarctic. She broke the engagement when he began writing every other aay instead of every day. Dr. Donald Shafer, the noted phlebotomist ( a phlebotomist is one who studies the bottom of a flea), will spend his life studying the Marsian flea. There are several career women aboard. Two of these are Maxine O'Black, the New York dress designer, and her model Marlene Gray. Maxine originated the new pantaloon styles that are so popular now. Pat Hickman is learning her job in the Boeing airplane factory where she was known as, Rosie the Riveter, by her fellow workers. Two nationally famous men are aboard, Robert Kimball, the T. V. and radio news commentator, and Ronald Leonard, the winner of the world championship for pogo-stick hopping. The Mars colony is even going to have a football team; Jody and Bill Braun have 11 boys, ages 14 to 2, who are already shaping up into the traditional football team, all braun and no brains. Capt. Robert D. Fulton of the Salvation Army will establish a branch of that great organization in the new colony. Mr. Kenneth Nanson who is Pres, of the Consolidated Lucky Lager, Rainer, and Olympia Beers, Best in the West Brewery is planning his new location on the planet and will be there for several months. The Mars newspaper will be edited by Ann Cameron, former editor of the most widely read newspaper of our day, the Vernonia Buzzard. Betty and Speed Lusby, multi-millionaire operators of the Speedy Race Track, are planning to build a vacation home in the colony. The heiress , Kathleen Van Sauer is going with them, just for the ride , ans she has with her, her chauffeur, Fred Drips, who was formerly a bell-boy at the vValdorf Astoria. The Bank of Mars will be a branch of the Moola Bank, Miss Joyce Jones, is transferring to the branch at Mars. Clarence Norris, a man of distinction, and his fifth wife, are going to throw a big party for all of the colonists, (I have mentioned only a few) and all of the workers that were already there. Next week there will be news of the landing, living conditions, and of course, the party. This page is sponsored by NICHOLS VARIETY STORE AND THE VERNONIA EAGLE.
