Y if 527 EM ' 5 ,dvi 5 - ff Senior lass History We pulled out our handkerchiefs and mopped off our foreheads. It was not so warm-but we were freshmen just entering Vernonia High School, thirty-three of us, in fact. We were initiated in due form, given a party, and then we had to settle down to a year's work. Our class ad- visor was Mr. Wilkerson. This year we had six honor pupils. Next year we became sophomores, and it was our duty to show the Frosh who was boss. The year soon passed, and we left school with a good record. Our class advisor was Miss Mirabel Goodin. Juniors--now we have to get in and dig a little. We all worked hard and gave the teachers very little trouble. This year we put on a play, Sally Lunn. The Junior Prom was a great success, surpassing all previous proms, and we believe, all proms to come. Our class advisor was Thomas Graham. As seniors we were models for the under class-men. This year we were represented in all branches of athletics, debates, offices and plays. Our play Step on It, Stan was a great success. It is now that we have to look forward to something great, and we have but the happy remembrances of the past of V. H. S. to look back upon. Our class ad- visor is Mr. Austin. Page Fourteen ' ,, . CLARENCE WARDLE-Be courteous and kind. JAMES CURRIE-A man that can smile when he loses is a credit to his school. GILBERT BERGERSON-A smiling face and a kind word are great assets in life. WARD GOODING-Work will conquer difficulties. LOUISE SIMMONS-Keep in step with the time lest you stumble and fall. NORMAN GREEN-If it is good enough to take your time, it is worth the best that you can give it. MORRIS BENNETT-Let a smile be your umbrella on a rainy day. RUTH CARMICHAEL--Perseverance and hope will lead you to your goal. ALLEN RAY-Let perfection be your daily guide. IDA MAE HAWKINS-A house founded on truth is never shaken. H. S. fifty-five strong. After being initiated, we were given a party.. Through the help of Mr. W'ilkerson, our class advisor, we became fair- ly good students. We had several honor students in our Freshman year. They were: Ellen Ek, Emily Poetter, Ethel Tousley, Frances Lappe, Della Cline, Thelma Spencer, Betty Culver, and Russell Peck. In 1926, we became sophomores and had our chance to initiate the Freshmen. We elected Mr. Wilkerson for our class advisor again. Our honor students were: Ellen Ek, Ethel Tousley, Russell Peck, and Frances Lappe. Now, we are Juniors, with Mr. Wilkerson still as our class advisor. We are represented in almost every activity in school. Della Cline and Archie Adams represented us in basketball. Archie and Oliver Mellinger were football lettermen. La Velle Gosa, Della Cline, and Archie Adams are on the annual staff. Della Cline, Ethel Tousley, La Velle Gosa and Thelma Spencer are on the debate team. And our honor students this year are: Della Cline, Thelma Spencer, Betty Culver, Russell Peck, Ellen Ek, Louise Miller, and Frances Lappe. April twentieth we presented our class play, Smile, Rodney, Smile, which was a great success. Our Junior 'prom proved to be one of the best ever given in V. H. S. We are now eagerly' looking forward to the same time when we will be seniors and when we can do more and better things for our school. We ended the freshmen initiation by inviting them to a party at which we are sure they enjoyed themselves. Our class officers are: Glen Hieber, president, Neal Bush, vice-presi- dent, Violet Phelps, secretary-treasurer: and Kenneth Price, sergeant at arms. Miss Malmsten is our class advisor. We claim to be a progressive class, and we boast the following honor pupils: Catherine Hoffman, Dwight Strong, Violet Phelps, Alberta De- Roch. On October 28, 1927, we had a bereavement in the loss of one of our fellow classmates, Harold Mortimer. About two weeks after school began a class meeting was called at which the following class officers were elected: Gloyd Adams, presidentg Tord Berg. vice-presidentg Grace Condit, secretaryg and Junior Bennett, treasurer. Later Larry Marshall was appointed reporter for the freshmen class. Mrs. Brewer is our class advisor. Three weeks after school began the sophomores gave us an initiation party. We were good sports and had as much fun as they. Our class has been an aid to the high school athletics. Many of the boys made the second team in football, and also had the honor of having one of the Freshmen boys on the first team in basketball and a sub for the first team. Maxine Blair was a sub for the girls' basketball team. Page Twenty-one WA, 'X f , , ff at el f ll? itil IIA N 1 ff -u s 1 : X . 1, , X .. ,. Spreading the News, a one act play, proved to be the principal feature of the program. Various musical numbers were given, and side shows as well as the fortune telling fur- nished much amusement. From all sides came the student voices advertis- ing Hot Dogs on ice, Ice Scream this way gentlemen. While the jostling crowds flocked to the many booths for candy, cake, pie, and soda-pop. Freshmen Initiation After being tormented by the sophs for an entire week the babies be- came full fledged freshmen on Friday 27. On the eventful night many pranks were played on the poor innocent babies, and some of the more naughty ones suffered for not obeying their elders. The children played many games, but Ring Around O'Rosy proved to be the most fascinating to them. They became sleepy early as all babies do, so the sophs fed them ice cream, cake, and punch, and took them home sleepy but happy. The Junior Prom The Junior Prom which was the outstanding social event of the season, took pace in the gym May 1. The entire faculty, seniors. the alumni, and Dr. and Mrs. W. H. Hurley, who acted as patrons, were invited to attend. The gym was the picture of spring with the many leaves and flowers which adorned its interior. The Junior and Senior class colors which are orchid and silver, added greatly to the attractiveness. Dancing began at 8 o'clock and continued until 11 on a floor smooth to perfection, when dainty refreshments were served in an unique man- ner. Everyone declared that he had had a wonderful time. The Senior Class Party The annual senior class party was given at the home of Clarence Wardle, December 17. Some of the alumni attended. The evening was spent in dancing and delightful refreshments includ- ing ice-cream were served. All the seniors who attended reported that a more jolly evening was never spent. We ondler The other day the editor of the Sagebrush Gazette, weekly newspaper of Wolf Valley, received the following mysterious message, on which the editorial staff is divided as to whether it is the work of a lunatic or some practical joker who is playing one of his pranks and has picked them out as his victims. Here is the contribution: To whom it may concern: Was Paul Revere's ride the one and only ride? I say, no! very emphatically. On the 18th of April in the year of our Lord 1775, Art Klutz, as worthy a citizen of Lexington as ever shoul- dered a muzzle loader, sat twirling the controls of his fourteen-tube Suffer Hemodyne endeavoring to pick up Paris, when suddenly across the ether flashed the message, The British are coming. Leaping to his feet, with a yawn, friend Art strode out to the garage and cranked his Nelson Special Twin 2. With a clash of gears he was off. Roaring down Main street at the tremendous speed of eleven miles an hour he whispered, The British are coming ! Heads were thrust out the windows and missiles of various description came hurtling through the air. One, a brick, was fortunate enough to hit Art behind the ear. After parking his car, he curled up in the corner of the seat and drifted into dreamland. Art, therefore, received no credit for his endeavors. The people, numb- skulls that they were, gave all glory to Paul. Thus it has been all through the ages. I could relate similar incidents of Joe Fish and Archibald Pellerton, did the space permit. Again, I ask you, is such patriotic service as Art's to go unheralded? Yours sincerely, . ANONYMOUS. -H. Nelson, '30. Norman Green, another senior, distinguished himself by breaking' up plays for the opponents before they got well started. Clarence Wardle played his best game against Clatskanie, throwing them -for many losses and making gains off tackle. Clarence graduates this year. Veldon Parker, midget backfield man was slippery and heady. Chalk- ing up yardage and intercepting passes was a specialty for him. He plans on college next year. Allen Ray, our towering center, mussed up his opponent and smeared plays in most of the games. Allen graduates this year. e Archie Adams played a whirlwind game at end snatching impossible passes out of the azore in every game. Archie will be one of the main- stays of the team next season. Edward Roles played a smashing game at tackle on both offensive and defensive. Ed was one of our best on the line. We lose him this year. James Currie was a great aid to our line. Although light of weight he never allowed gains through his side. James graduates. Ward Gooding played a game at end that always kept the opponent guessing. The last quarter Castle Rock broke through making three touch- downs to win the game 19-7. October 18 Vernonia played Rainier at Rainier. This was the hardest fought game of the season. Vernonia lost 26-6. Our next game was with Scappoose on the local field. The ground was wet, which made it impossible to break away. Both teams were evenly matched in weight and experience. We held them to a 0-0 score. The last game of the season was played November 1, when Clatskanie came to Vernonia. Clatskanie put up a hard fight and held us to an 0-0 tie. Page Thirty-six . Team Personnel Della Cline, forward. Della, our old standby, whose motto is Never Give Up, is our best. Without her pep and energy the team would be lost. We are glad we have her with us next year. Ida Mae Hawkins, forward. At least, we call her forwardg but since she plays equally well in almost every position, she is a very valuable player whom we are very sorry to lose by graduation. Mildred Hawkins, jumping center. Mildred, the incomparable center, is one of our best players and she did her best this year in helping us to be victorious. Helen Hieber, running center. Here, there, everywhere, just where we need her most in center, that's Helen. We will lose Helen this year by graduation and all of us greatly regret it. Mary Oberst, guard. Mary, who came to us new last year, has won a reputation of a guard who is always there to hinder her opponent from making a basket. Charlotte Green, guard. Charlotte was always there ready and quick to prevent her opponent from scoring on us. She had done the next to impossible in winning a place on the team as guard after only a few practices. Having accomplished this feat it is a mystery what she will do next year. Louise Simmons, substitute. We were sorry when Louise could not join us at the first of the season, but we were very glad indeed when she came in to her own at mid-year as our dependable forward. We lose her by graduation. Always hitch on autos and trucks. You cover much more territory and often give ambulance drivers a little work. 2. Never fear the faculty. Just do as you please and tell them where to get off. Such action helps raise your standing among your fellow-stu- dents, and pleases your parents greatly. 3. When playing around autos, press all the buttons and levers pos- sible. Some day one will start, and you will be rewarded. 4. Never let your school work interfere with your social lifeg if you are unable to get enough sleep at night, make it up in class.
