The an- nual magazine sale helped to contribute the money need- ed for the end of the year Senior Dinner Dance. The Senior Class would like to thank all the administrators and faculty for all their hard work and dedication to help make their years here a success. Representative to Board of Education The Student Representative to the Board of Education maintains a non-voting position on the Board. He is there as an advisor to the Board on matters dealing with the students and to represent the student body. If you want to have something brought before the board talk to your Representative. Marty Ccsana 18 Valedictorian Martin Ccsana 95.500 During my years at V.V.S. I have participated in the Student Council, Track team. Soccer team. Brass Ensemble, Concert band. Wrestling team, and the Na- tional Honor Society. I have received the honors of win- ning the Bausch Lomb Science Award and the Rensselaer Medal. In the future I plan to attend the United States Military Academy at West Point. Here I will study engineering and use the knowledge I gain in service of the United States in the Army. The memories 1 take with me, of my friends, classmates, teachers, advisors, and especially the MRGD society will be treasured. Salutatorian Peter Lin 93.362 Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow, creeps in the petty pace ’till graduation day, whence my senior year will come to its end. It has been a beneficial year, so far, in which I have accomplished a great deal. Among the most interesting things I have done in my senior year are: I have been a student aide in the school's computer lab, I have run the lights for Thespians in their production of Ten Little Indians, and, I have participated on the V.V.S. tennis team. My plans for the future are not extraordinary. I plan to go to college and major in electrical engineering. I would like to thank all my teachers and especially thank Mr. Adams, who inspired me to be a student aide. Being salutatorian has not changed my views or goals but it has been an interesting experience. 19 Honor Graduates A. Kim Wojdyla 93.182 B. Suzanne Tofte 92.689 C. Beth James 91.581 D. Judge Wargrave was portrayed by Kenneth Nicoletti alias, the killer, got a taste of his own medicine in the end. The hero Captain Lombard, por- trayed by Robert Morse saves the leading lady Vera Claythorne, played by Shanna Eck, in truly enviable style. The cast consisted of Amy Johnson, Doug Herter, Barb Lisi, Sean Tierney, Jim Freemire, Tina Dorn, John Mineo and Eric Kelly, all under the direction of John Gannon. The backstage crew was made up of Scott Reese, Meg Gregory, Rob Zeller, Peter Lin, Rich McCoy and Jeff Ankrum. The Thes- pians would like to thank all who came and enjoyed the play. They certainly had fun doing it! 80 Band The 1984-85 V.V.S. Concert Band worked hard the year to compete in grade level five music during the month of April. Concerts performed included the annual Winter and Spring Concerts, as well as performances at Sherrill Elementary School, at the Concourse in Albany, and various other high schools. They also performed in a district- wide band concert as a part of “Music in Our Schools Month.” Many V.V.S. band members were selected for All- County and Area-All-State groups; and many also competed at N.Y.S.S.M.A. Solo Competition for individual performance grades. To raise spirits in the chorus we exchanged names and par- ticipated in a successful “secret san- ta” program. We are also celebrating music in our schools month, March, with various activities, one being a choral night with all district schools, middle and elementary, combining in a celebration of voices and music. The officers. President Lisa Hart- man, Treasurer Shanna Eck, and Librarians Kathy Erickson and Cin- dy Pawlikowski are all trying to organize and prepare for a successful Spring Concert and maybe even a grade school tour. Of course, nothing could be successful without a dynamic leader and director that we have in Mrs. Tyler. CHORUS. Row 1: A. Nasci; A. Ricotta; J. Stevens; D. Seifert; W. Vineali; S. Pawlikowski; K. Performing in our own annual Christmas and Spring Concerts, the first all-district string night, and as the guests at the Herkimer and Oswego County Music Festivals, VVS string players are better than ever. Their repertoir has grown to include more demanding classical pieces, as well as some pop music. Student conductors are Jessica Cesana, Anna Nasci, and Cindy Pawlikowski. 84 ORCHESTRA. R. Campion, M. One of this year’s highlights was a trip to the Oneida Extended Care Facility to perform Christmas Music for the residents. Marching Band The V.V.S. Marching Band, under the direc- tion of Mr. David Shemancik, graced our foot- ball field many times during the fall months. They’re both entertainers and spirit boosters; the band delighted many a V.V.S. fan during their half-time show. In addition to mastering the music, dedicated band members also must learn crisp routines and precision marching. MARCHING BAND Row I: S. Eck, K. Mitchell, K. Bishop. Row 2: A. Boyce, V. Novell, J. With Foreign Language week, bake sales, participation in the annual Oswego Language Fair, the International Banquet, and lots of parties really got things going. There arc 15 members. Kathy Erickson is President; Dawn Haggerty, Vice President; Vickie Novell. Secretary; and Tammy Danyew, Treasurer. Latin Club also has plans of con- tributing a monetary award for an outstanding student. The French Club has been assisting the Spanish Club in raising money for their trip to Madrid and Paris. The French club also participated in an in- ternational dinner, in the cafeteria, held during Foreign Language Week in March. This year the Spanish Club has been busy with fund raising activities so that they can plan a trip to Europe. They've sold cheese and sausage, and M M's, under the leadership of President Bonnie Schwartz. AFS The 1984 85 AFS Club has been active- ly raising money this year to support students who go abroad under the AFS program and also to fund their AFS short term exchange to Westlake, Ohio. Members of the club traveled to Ohio dur- ing the February vacation and lived with host families fora week. Westlake students will return the visit and travel to VVS in May. Our chapter has raised money by the selling of AFS Friendship Bonds and the annual picture sales. This has been the most active AFS club that VVS has had in several years. Officers elected for the year were Bob Morse, president; Kim Wojdyla, Vice President; Su ie Toftc, Secretary; and Mary Houck, Treasurer. When I studied Spanish and read about this lost city somewhere in the Andes, little did I know a year and half later I would be traveling to this country where I would be living for two months. The summer of my junior year was to say the least, the most memorable of my life. I lived with the Negron family in the capital city, Lima, in the country of Peru. Everything was new for me. The food, the crazy way they drive, and the customs. The most in- teresting custom to me was that of kissing the peo- ple you meet. It look some getting used to but by the end of the summer it wasn’t as uncomfortable. I think it is good, for it seems to put you on a friendly basis right from the start. The trip varied from Lima, a huge city in the Pacific where it hardly ever rains, to Arequipa a fascinating city made entirely of white ash stone, to being lost in the valley near Urabamba (a tributary to the Amazon), to the mystical mountain ruins of the lost city of Macchu-Picchu where even the mist has an aura of nostalgia. Though the places were exciting, the most in- triguing part of my experience was the people I met and the friendships I made. The warmth and concern they showed m was incredible. I have gained a greater apprecu ion for the U.S. and a greater feeling of independence, and a greater understanding of the way people think. Through the experience I learned a deeper faith in my beliefs and the meaning of “I want to be your friend. There arc many things that will live in my memory; speed bumps, sevici, Spanish gram- mar. sickly train rides, servicio escolar, papaya juice, paticnccm ancon bicycle ride, chivalry. Footloose, churros (both kinds), and the day we visited the Universidad dc Lima. Best of all, I remember and thank papa, mama, my little brothers Carlos and Tony, my sister Ivette who taught me so much. Mis amigos tc quierda! Ivette. Manuel, Gustavo, Katie, Evan, Marco, and Shawn. Thank you AFS for the opportunity you have given me, I will never forget it. The Dordogne, in the southwestern part of France, was home for me in the summer of 1984. The AFS program sent me to live with the Ettori family and later with the Mazabrauds. Bdth families are of middle class status, living in rural towns. The four members that made up the Ettori family are Frederic, age 14ft; Alexander, age 6ft; and their two retired parents, Dominique and Luis. The Mazabrauds had no children living with them at the time of my stay. These families showed me the culture and French way of life by allowing me to be another member of their family and live my summer as they did. This experience led me to Paris, Bordeaux, Periguex, castles, caves, and many more beautiful historical spots along the French countryside. By meeting not only French peo- ple, but teenagers from all parts of the United States, communicating with people who spoke a different language, of which I had no previous experience, and by living the life of a French person, I feel I have had a prosperous AFS experience. I was able to learn more about another culture and. therefore, understand myself better and form more objective goals. Bob Morse 90 Bonnie Schwartz Hi! I am Ivcttc from Peru. I'm 18 years old. I'm staying with the Schwartz family. I’m very glad to be here in the U.S. I have been sharing moments with you that have helped me to belter understand your ideas, your customs and your principles. I think the things that one learns out- side your country doesn’t give the true idea of America. Through books, movies and the media we get the wrong perception of the United States and its people, and stereo-types arc formed. This experience is teaching me even more than I expected. Through diverse situations I’ve had to face alone. I’ve been able to better know myself. I have become a more mature person, my prin- ciples have been strengthened which are helping me to develop my character. In America I have learned many things and many values. For example, the people are always striving for a belter way of life through technology. I admire how your country puts such great emphasis on education, and shows concern for the hungry and unemployed. I’m glad to see the government really cares for the people. The people cooperate with a respect for each other, for the laws, for the property, and there exists a mutual respect for each other ideas. Through this experience I have gained a better appreciation for my country, my family, my friends and my people, even with all of the problems my country has. We are a community with same goals for the future and each day we strive to attain these goals. I believe that the same is true here. Peru isn’t only Macchu Picchu and llamas. We have many other interesting things in the pre- sent not only from the past. Lima, the capital, where I live, is a modern city just like any large ci- ty in America But there is one thing which almost never changes, the heart of our people, for we arc accommodating, hospitable and have a friendly spirit. Although we don’t have many material things to offer, in charity, love and spiritual things, we arc really generous people. In general we are conservative in our ideas and principles. Peru is a religious country with 95.8% be- ing Catholic. I will never forget all the wonderful times that I have spent with you. I hope that with all the true friends that I have gained, we will continue these friendships forever, through both distance and time. Ivette Negron Hi! I’m Miguel Fontes from Brazil and I’m staying with the Warners. I love to play soccer. My team is in the AABB league. My favorite team is the Flamcngo in Brazil. I also enjoy tennis and every day I play after school. I like gym and math class, but social studies, English, and Biology are hard to understand right now. I’m glad to be living with Mr. and Mrs. Warner, for I love them very much. I do miss my family in Brazil too. I’ve made many true friends here and when I return to Brazil I want to tell everyone of the good people here. I especially like to talk to Ivette because she speaks Spanish. The first two weeks I was here everything was a surprise, but I’m getting used to it now. I love the snow but I really don’t like the cold or the T.V. commercials that always advertise food cat, cat, eat! I hope that the people like me. O.K. I’m finished! I send a big hug to the American People, especially to the girls! Miguel Fontes Culture Shock is the only way to express the beginning of my AFS experience. Costa Rica is a small central American country that could fit into the state of Rhode Island It has many of the modern conveniences, but life in Costa Rica doesn’t have the malls, department stores, and grocery stores we have. Bread is bought at the bakery, meat at the meat market, and you would go to a tailor for your clothes. The pace of everyday life is much slower. You don’t find people rushing around to catch a bus. If a bus is missed, “que important,’’ there will be another. The Costa Rican people are very friendly towards visitors from other countries. I couldn’t speak Spanish when I arrived and not only my family, but everyone I met. was very patient with me and tried to help me learn the language. If you walked down the street of a small town or a city just about everyone you met will say “adios.” I was very fortunate to have been placed with the Cordoba family. Right from the start, they opened their hearts to me. My mom treated me as if I were her son and she was my mom. My relationship with my brothers is much harder to explain. As we were more than brothers and we were more than just friends. As it was hard to leave my family to go to Costa Rica, and it was just hard to leave my new family and come home I would like to thank the V.V.S. adult and student chapters of AFS for giving me this opportunity. My “AFS Experience’’ will always be a part of my life. 91 Chuck Browell National Honor Society This year the National Honor Society held two blood mobiles, sold daffodils for the Cancer Society, and had other various flower sales, as they have done in years past. Roger Clark Middle Rd Sherrill Sheveron Has It! Few realize what it really takes to put together a yearbook; staying after school almost every night, typing, cropping pic- tures, drawing layouts, writing and rewriting . . . again and again. We con- tinually struggle to meet deadlines. Headaches and overworked nerves are commonplace. But, even with all the problems, we somehow manage to have fun. Our “Midnight Marathons before deadlines are broken up with our infamous “Pizza Runs, and the friends that are made on the staff arc the best in the world; whether we be arguing over ideas for copy and layouts or ravaging the halls. The biggest reward, though, is know- ing that we arc the ones who capture the memories. Not only the memories of the Seniors, but also those of the underclassmen, teachers, and ad- ministrators. The memories of the good times, bad times, football games, fooling around, those fabulous school lunches, club meetings, and even math tests are recorded in the yearbook. Someday, when we look back at our yearbook, we will remember the times we had and even if no one remembers the Sheveron Staff, the results of our hard work will last forever. A. We will make many friends. Some, we will know for only A short while. Others, for a much longer time. Some, we'll always have close to us. Others, we won’t see so often. Yet we'll think of them just the same. Whether they’re near or far, long or short. Friends are important to have. Friends are the best there is in life. - - Buddies Don’t be dismayed at good-byes A farewell is necessary before you can meet again And meeting again After moments or lifetimes Is certain for those who are friends. 156 A Forever Friend Through the good times And through the bad times. Through the glad times, And through sad times, A friend is always there! Through up times. And through down times, through smile times. And through frown times, A friend will always care!! 157 A friend is one to whom one may pour out all the contents of one’s heart, chaff and grain together, knowing that the gentlest of hands will take and sift it, keep what is worth keep- ing, and with a breath of kind- ness ... blow the rest away. 158 True Friends There are many people That we meet in our lives But only a few Will make a lasting impression On our minds and hearts It is these people that we will Think of often And who will always remain Important to us As true friends. 159 — A — Activities.............................81 Ads...................................137 AFS....................................90 — B — Band...................................82 Baseball..............................114 Basketball........................126-129 Boys................................126 Girls...............................129 Best Buddies......................154-159 Board of Education....................133 Student Representative...............13 Bowling...............................132 Brass Ensemble.........................85 Bus Drivers...........................112 — C — Cafeteria.............................112 Cheerleaders: Football............................122 Basketball..........................128 Chorus.................................83 Cross Country.........................125 CSFA...................................89 — D — Directory...........................49-58 — F — Faculty............................96-112 FFA....................................94 FHA....................................94 Field Hockey..........................119 Football..........................120-122 French Club..........................88 Freshmen..........................70-75 — G — GARA.................................95 Golf................................117 Guidance............................102 — H — Holidays ............................96 Honor Graduates...................20-21 — J — Janitors............................112 Junior Prom..........................59 Juniors..............................64 — L — Last Will and Testament..............60 Latin Club...........................88 Literacy Volunteers..................86 — M — Mathletics...........................87 Marching Band........................85 Media Center........................Ill — N — National Honor Society...............92 — O — Opening Section.......................2 Orchestra............................84 Outstanding Students................134 — P — Play.................................80 Principal...........................101 — S — SADD....................................89 Salutatorian ...........................19 Secretaries............................Ill Seniors.................................18 Shcveron................................97 Soccer: Boys.................................123 Girls................................124 Softball...............................115 Sophomores..............................70 Spanish Club............................88 Special Olympics.......................136 Sports.................................113 Student Council ........................93 Superintendents........................100 — T — Tennis.................................118 Track: Spring...............................116 Winter...............................125 — U — Underclassmen...........................63 — V — Valedictorian...........................19 Varsity Club............................95 Vice Principal.........................101 Volleyball ............................131 — W — Winter Ball.............................69 Wrestling..............................130
