He was known to all of us as Mr. Merrick. He got an idea one day. He said, “ ‘Oh God,’ I’ve got ‘The Greatest’ idea. It’s ‘Bound for Glory’.” His idea was a yearbook for the school. He got these “Little Darlings” to work on it. Jennifer Hastings was Editor-in-chief; Chris Lenhart, Associate-editor; Anne V. Matwijec, Literary Editor; Dawn Parsons, Activity Editor; John Pelicano, Head Photographer; Beth Spink, Photography Editor; Kim Weimer, Sports Editor; Carolyn Davis, Assistant Sports Editor; Kenny Dining and Anne Buda, Business Editors; and Tammy Peters, Underclassmen Editor. We were considered “Wizards. “Time After Time” we ended up “Starting Over” and over and over and over. Usually we walked around in “The Fog” and heard weird “Voices. Everyone wanted a “Piece of the Action.’ We were not ones to turn away people we considered “The Wanderers. Sometimes we wondered “Which Way Is Up” and other times we thought wow, “My Brilliant Career.” Looking through our Sheveron Cabinet turned into a “Scavenger Hunt” and what we were looking for turned up “Hiding in Plain Sight.” We had to “Handle With Care” our sensitive photographers. Then we realized, it was only a “Matter of Time” before “When Time Ran Out.” In Sheveron we were “A Small Circle of Friends,” and just “Being There” was enough when we had a “Two Minute Warning.” The most memorable times were our yelling matches, weird ideas for movies (that couldn’t be used), listen- ing to classical music, distractions (due to “Men who ‘just hap- pened’ to fall to Earth”) and our favorite, talking behind peo- ple’s backs. “Our Long Journey” to finish the yearbook was “Rocky” and looked like a “Roller Coaster.” Mr. Merrick’s “Last Word” drove Jenny crazy and we all ended up with “Nasty Habits.” But “The Fury” and our “High Anxiety” combined with our “Sweet Revenge” (on certain people) came to a halt; the “Day The World Ended,” was our final deadline. “The End SHEVERON - Row 1: K Weimer. Is Ecrn A Star Thespians Starting the year off with their dazzling production of “Harvey,” the VVS Thespians displayed their many talents to a laughing audience. Last spring in the produc- tion of “Hansel and Gretel,” starring Heidi Conland and Robert Morse, a farewell was given to the many ap- preciated seniors. To enhance their acting ability, the Thespians attended the Oswego Drama Festival in the spring. With a troop of seasoned veterans and rookies under the direction of Mrs. Cheryl Anderson, the future looks bright and promising. 20 THESPIANS — Row 1: W. Jones. C. Rodgers. L. Laguzza. D. Buehner. I spent two months in Bogota, Colombia, living with a wonderful family. Everything was a new ex- perience for me — traveling, living in the city, speaking Spanish, going to a private, all-girls school, etc. There seemed to be no limit to the new things I could learn each day. My one regret is that the time flew by so quickly, almost without my realizing it. I gained some very valuable friendships and will always have fond memories of the time I spent in Bogota. I would like to take this chance to again thank the AFS’ers both here and abroad for making this great ex- perience possible for me. I could never repay or thank you enough for all you have done. Sincerely, Sherri Angell 22 This past summer I traveled to Brazil as a part of the AFS Student exchange program. I stayed with the Lind- berg Coelho family of Coronei Fabriciano and had three married sisters and three brothers at home. Many memories flood my mind as I think back on my ex- periences, some good, some bad. I will remember the wild and wonderful orientations in Miami and Campinas, I love N.Y., the tremendous excitement of Espanha '82, Zico, bananas fritas, bandeiras, futebol and volleyball in the streets, Repagem Silvana, Copa Cabana Beach, Queen and the Stones, Superman II in Portuguese, Nicoiena Nilcelia, “Mosquito”, Jorges, igreja. Debora e Rosane, another tire store!, Obrigado De Nada and especially the kindness and warmth of the Brazillian peo- ple. I'd like to thank my family and friends here for their understanding. Thank you AFS and a special thanks to my family — Mama, Papa, Sara, Sandra, Samuel, Silvia, Lindberg Jr. e Carlos. Obrigado-Shari Tillotson Hello, My name is Cinara de Carmo Nascimento. 1 am a Rotary Exchange Student from Brazil who had the destiny to study in the United States for one year. I live in Presidente Prudente, which is a city in the state of Sao Paulo. I have one sister and two brothers. They are all younger than me. My favorite sports are basketball, judo, capoeira, and soccer. Although I have only been here for a little while, I have a special love for everyone at VVS. I especially like going to the boys’ varsity basketball games. I am grateful to everyone who made me feel welcome, even though we couldn’t communicate very well (as I don’t speak much English). I would also like to give a kiss to my host family, the Langs. My name is George Nicolopoulos and 1 come from Rhodes, an island, at the Northeastern part of Greece. Rhodes is a cosmopolitan city of 40,000 people. There are about one million people who visit the island of Rhodes every year. I came to the United States as an AFS student and stayed with the Morse family of Vernon Center. I really en- joyed the people and the school life here. I had a great time meeting new people and also learning about the American culture. AFS is one of the best ways to explore cultural dif- ferences between two countries. When an AFS’er goes back to his country he is a more mature person with a bet- ter sense of responsibility. He learns to trust people who he didn’t even know two days before. It was a great experience for me being here, learning about the people and culture of Central New York. I ap- preciate all the help which was given to me by the students and teachers of V. V. S. Consisting of the four student council officers and a representative from each grade, the executive committee finalizes all decisions made by the general student council. Also, many of the ideas for projects taken on by the students are decided on in the executive meetings. This year, the Student Council helped out with many various projects. They donated money to Special Olympics and struggling school clubs. Members volunteered to paint the cafeteria in the fall. Also, they assisted in coordinating after-school activities. President Karen Hall said the council members were very enthusiastic and hard working. Other officers were Mike Gawkins (Vice-Pres.), Dawn Parsons (treasurer), and Tracey Ingalls (secretary). In this once peaceful and tranquil town, a surge of excitement, confusion, anger and later on . . . thankfulness. One man was responsible for such a mass of emotion. The man was Harold Hill, a traveling salesman of band equipment. With his wit and clever tongue he cons the whole town into buying all of his wares. His plan was devious and cunning, and it worked! The band equipment now ar- rives and with his new invention of the think system he tried to fool the town’s people long enough to escape. But his scheme backfired when he unwillingly fell in love with the beautiful, lonely librarian, Marian, and when he looked deep into her eyes filled with love, he found that he could never leave. Mr Walter Merrick was the director, while Mrs. Jackie Jahsman was his assistant. Pam Bodner was student director. Mrs. Sue Tyler was the vocal in- structor and Miss Lisa Leonardi was the orchestra conductor. Harold Hill was played by Christopher Croad and Marian was played by Susan Pelicano. The musical was a success and well worth the time and money. 28 If you Could See What I Hear SR. In addition to providing ceremonial music for graduation, the group has also performed at student concerts, at community events, and on local radio and television stations. It is directed by Mr. Robert Ailers. Dubbed “A Touch of Brass” by its members, the ensemble plays a variety of music from the Twelfth Century to the present. BRASS ENSEMBLE — Left: Row 1: J. Mrs. Rosendale also spent many hours helping the girls to open up and share their feelings through their routines. The goal of the Varsity Club this year was to stimulate more in- terest so that they could help the coaches at tournaments and other major sporting events. The only qualification for this club is having a varsity letter. This year the members, headed by Glen Clinch, president; Dave Burns, vice president; Jan Lang, secretary; and Mike Erickson, treasurer, sold refreshments at basketball games. They also bought carnations for all seniors with varsity letters and gave them out at the basketball pep assembly. VARSITY CLUB Row 1: K. Hugenine, J. Kiefer. K. Hennesey, S. Woodard, B. The GARA’s biggest concern has been to further oppor- tunities for girls in sports. When they raise money it goes to organizations such as the Woman’s Sports Foundation and the Olympics. Some of their money also helps members go to various summer camps. The club’s latest contribution has been a new scholarship for female graduates. GARA — Row 1: E. Sanderson. B. Laboda, S. Croft, D. The FHA is a supplement to and an extension of courses offered by the Home Economics Department. Members are involved in school and community service as well as individual projects. Last year’s activities in- cluded several bakesales and a Christmas pot-luck sup- per. This year they have been studying foreign foods, experimenting with different styles of cooking, and learning about community resources. Cake decorating projects, a speaker from the RDC, and a year-end trip to a restaurant are planned. 34 “My Brilliant Career MEDIA CENTER CLUB - Row 1: D. Elliot, S. McAllister. Row 2: T. Petrie, C. One of the activities that they have carried on is the annual Citrus Sale. The money raised is used to send FFA members to the Na- tional Convention in Kansas City, the State Camp at Oswegatchie, and the Farm Bureau Seminar in Albany. Other activities include speaking contests, leadership contests, and their annual banquet. This year’s officers are: Glen Kobler, president; Don Dust, vice president; Mark Faldzinski, secretary; Jim Condon, treasurer; Kevin Dust, reporter; and Jim Collins, sentinel. There exists, however, a club that takes that in stride and goes a step farther. Mathematical competition of the interscholastic kind is experienced by the VVS “Math-lete.” In competition with 15 other schools in the Oneida County Math League, a point system keeps track of placement throughout the six monthly meets. Instead of running the 100 meter dash, throwing a javelin, or vaulting a pole, these triathletes compete in individual short answer, team, and relay questions. A five member team represents the school in search of the perfect 100 point score. Unidentified Flying Cddball Our talented majorettes, led by captain Teresa Mennig, provide entertainment during the half-time at home football and basketball games. They have done many new and dif- ferent routines this year, including one to “Here Comes Santa Clause” for the Christmas Tournament. The ma- jorettes also march in parades in the spring with the mar- ching band. MAJORETTES — Row 1: M. Lupinski. Row 2: T. Buckingham, T. The class has made many exciting plans for the year including a semi-formal dance in March and a dinner dance after graduation. To fund these events, the seniors sold magazines and posters. The Class of ’83 is unique and is doing its best to leave its mark on V.V.S. As the student representative to the Board of Education, Karl Pritchard gets a chance to voice the opinions and views of the students. He feels that the Board is removed from the problems that exist within the school and that it is impor- tant for the members to be aware of student opi- nion. So, the next time you want to voice an opi- nion, talk to your representative. That’s why he’s there. 38 Valedictcrian Karen Hall 96.04 Karen Hall, alias K.H., Joe Cool, and J.C., is the Valedictorian of the Class of 1983. Author, athlete, scholar, and stateswoman, she is a born leader and has tried her hand at just about everything. Her record includes being Varsity Field Hockey team captain (and star goalie), Senior High Student Council President, and GARA President. If VVS had had a debating team, Karen would also have headed that. Academically, she has majored in Latin, math, and science, won the Bausch and Lomb Award, and been a member of the National Honor Society. Next year Karen plans to attend Dennison University in Ohio to study psychology. Good job, J.C.! Salutatcrian Jeryl May Jonza 94.51 Jerri Jonza, in addition to her academic achievement, will always be remembered for her inimitable golf stance. She has been active in school as well as community activities. These in- clude Varsity Golf, National Honor Society, Band and musicals. Power Company, Colgate University Orchestra, and her church folk choir. During high school Jerri majored in math, science, Spanish, and music; in college she will major in broadcasting jour- nalism and minor in music. Jerri summed up her enthusiasm in past accomplishments and future plans by saying, “Life is a challenge. Live it!” 39 Hcncr Jennifer Cessna 93.78 Sheryl Angell 92.69 Margaret Doris 94.00 Paula Herter 93.25 Karen Francis 92.06 Lisa Tice 92.97 Diane Lacell 91.92 40 Graduates Sheila Forbes 91.67 Susanne Mollenhauer 90.70 Stacey Tiller 91.59 Teresa Mennig 90.40 Andrea Nickerson Michael Erickson 90.26 90.24 Henry Kipp 91.02 Julie Simonson 90.33 Patrick Stedman 90.06 David Camadine 90.48 41 Michelle Armstrong William Baltzer Laurie Belton Theresa Bitz The One and Only The seniors were asked to pick a movie that describes their high school experiences and then explain why. We ve Get Tonight THE JUNIOR PROM Weeks of preparation everyone in a state of frenziness hoping the prom will be a success. The gym, a pastel rainbow in its counterfeit appearance is now tranquil. Girls in smooth gowns faintly smelling of corsages young men look special and important. Music flowing through the air couples dancing, possessed with each other wanting this night to never end. In years to come this this will be a memory but we had tonight Tamie Piske For one magical night the high school gym- nasium was transformed into a storybook fan- tasyland by co-chairpersons Stephanie Chmielewski and Lori Schieffer with the aid of many enthusiastic members of the class. A beautiful mural was painted for the occasion by Sonya Snell. The night fulfilled the dreams of Doug Breckenridge and Lori Schieffer who were crowned king and queen by last year’s royalty Chuck Dygert and Sue Sansone. Ellen Bloom, Julie DeBarr, Carol Ellis, Holly Fahey, Kim Gor- man, Lisa Hale, Diane Lacell. Monique LaLonde, Brenda McLaughlin, Anne Renaldo, and Lora Tyminski were all members of the Queen’s Court. His creative hard work has been a positive influence on many lives. Here at Large 120 nnnnnnnDDnnnnpnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnQ Oh, Sod and ©h Gcd II Life is not a movie, although movies and life have many things in common. They can be: entertaining, emo- tional, instructive, exciting, or boring. But one special element is missing from movies that a full life must have: participation. Movies are passive. Life can and should be active. You, the audience in a movie, sit and absorb but do little else. You as a participant in life must be ac- tive. A movie is good or bad for about two hours. Life is good or bad for a lifetime. You can do nothing about a bad movie except walk out. You can prevent a bad life by actively participating in it. — Dr. Thomas Morgan 1. Dr. Thomas D. Each day the staff, made up of Mr. Tofte (Department Chairman), Mr. English, and Mrs. Isabelle, are available for student as well as parent conferences and any ques- tions you may have. The beginning of each school year presents an especially laborious time for juggling classes around for the many students requesting schedule changes. The new counseling sessions for students are very useful — especially for seniors. In preparing seniors for college, skills such as figuring averages and class rank are taught in addition to the up-to-date information on hundreds of colleges and available scholarships. The counselors feel, however, that all their hard work and ef- fort throughout the year are well worth it when they see students graduate and move on to college or a successful stretch in the employment world. 1. Row 2: Bruce Linton, William Vaughn, Suellen Emig, Douglas Wilbur, Janet Regner. Dr. Albert Kouba, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Patrick Curtin, Assistant Superintendent Students often do not realize the role of the board of education and the superintendent of schools. Many books and articles have been written describing the activities of the board. I’d like to briefly state the essence of the role of the board of education. Education in the United States is delegated to the state governments. State govern- ments, in turn, allow the local communities to exercise a tremendous amount of control in the local educational process. The key to local control is your board of education. These people, elected directly by the com- munity, are responsible for ensuring that each student in their district receives a quali- ty educational program. It is the board’s task to develop the policies which will guide the development of a program that will be beneficial for all of the district's students. In creating this program, the board utilizes the services of the superintendent of schools to administer the operation of the schools. The authority of the board, superintendent and staff is found in the Education Laws of the State. The entire purpose for this procedure is designed to place the control of local educa- tion in the hands of the community. The V.V.S. Board recognizes the seriousness of this task. It encourages community members to communicate with the board so that they can together plan the best program for V.V.S. students. Dr. Kouba “Time Raiders” “We in English use the past and draw on it to develop the present. We still use the present (basics) to move forward into the future. This is true of literature, grammar and all facets of the language arts pro- gram,” stated Mr. Dudas (Department Chairperson) of the English Department. No major changes occurred in this pro- gram this year. However, the teachers tried to work closer with each other, sharing their ideas and techniques which they found to work in the classroom. By doing this, they hoped to increase the students’ reading and writing proficiency; ultimately they hope that high scores on SATs, Regent’s Exams and competency Test scores are consistently accomplished. Mr. Lester Tarry 11. Mr. Richard Bohm 124 QDOOODQ. Science Department In the past, one of the main objectives of the science department has been to en- courage students to take science courses. The teachers have met with much success, as this year the enrollment in the courses was the highest ever, even with a decline in the overall number of students in the school. This has resulted in the addition of a new science teacher. Miss Paula Barone. SCIENCE 1. Mr. Ralph Adams 2. Mr. Robert Allers 3. Mrs. Cheryl Anderson 4. Miss Paula Barone 5. Mrs. Evelyn Emerson 6. Mr. Donald Law 125 0 “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly” The goal of the math department was to offer each V.V.S. math student the best Math course available for the students' ability and to evaluate his or her progress justly, which creates a sense of pride, a willingness to grow beyond all limits in the field of math. Cheers and celebration arose when Mr. Helmer returned to V.V.S. after a year of internship at Cazenovia. This was the on- ly change in the department this year. In “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, we could all picture our favorite math teachers in each category. But whether they are good, bad or ugly we couldn’t do without them, especially Mr. Clark the Math Chairperson. ii£ J Miss Gumina, department Chairperson dubbed the language program as “E.T.” because she says “we seem completely ‘foreign’ until you get to know us.” The foreign language teachers hope to encourage language study beyond elementary levels. They also try to in- terest students in continuing their language careers in college. MATH 1. Miss Renee Argentine 2. Mr. Charles Clark 3. Mr. Jerry DeBalso 4. Mr. Thomas Helmer 5. Perhaps he meant it to be left open for individual interpretation?!? This year, the business program’s main objective was to institute a new New York State curriculum; which started in 1982, and will take place over a five year period. “The Agony and the Ecstasy” The goal, says Mr. Walter Merrick, department chairperson, of the art department this year is to have an Alum- ni Art Show in May. This will give all in- spiring young artists pride in their work. It will also let the public admire their work. The only change this year was that, in the Mechanical Drawing course there was more design added. BUSINESS 1. Mr. Eugene Bennati 2. Mr. Thomas Dorman 3. Mr. Armand LaPlante 4. Mrs. Martha Nichols 5.
