Here it was up to us to do what we could with the material that each of us found; we fashioned our own world. We became the class of 1959. The story of how we accomplished all this is told through- out the pages of this book. Join us now as we relive these years — seeing us not only in our work, but also in our play. Lamb, John E. Deal, Jr. ADMINISTRATION In this complex world, which promises greater complexities for the future, each of you should have definite goals toward which you arc working. The end of this school year marks the completion of one of your aims. It is my sincere hope that you have found in this aca- demic climate, knowledge, inspiration, and friendships which will serve you in the attain- ment of future goals. May you look back on this year with fond memories. John Shawslci Superintendent DR. JOHN SKAWSKI Superintendent A WORD FROM MR. PILETTE It is a pleasure and a privilege to congratulate the Class of 1959. We have enjoyed your stay with us for the past six years and extend to each one of you our best wishes for continual success. We should be accustomed to saying good by and good luck to each graduating class, but in some ways it is usually a little sad. This feeling only serves to indicate that associating and working with you has been pleasant and gratifying, and we arc some- what reluctant to say goodby. We like to feel that our school has contributed much to your growth and stature so that you will be ready to meet the problems and challenges in your endeavors after graduation. We are certain that each one of you will be a credit to VVS. Beside a deep-felt sense of thanks and appre- ciation for your loyalty and support, we wish to ex- press our gratitude for the splendid co-operation received from the faculty and custodians in our school. Without the wholehearted and genuine in- terest of members of the staff in striving to meet the needs of the students, we would find it imposs- ible to arh:evc worthwhile objectives in our educa- tional program. Because of the rapid growth taking place in the American economy, more and better oppor- tunities for young people arc developing every day. We feel certain that your education and training will enable each one of you to find a proper place in the social and economic structure of the American way of life. JOHN B. A SENIOR LOOKS BACK Let us go back to that first day, September 7, 1955, which marked the beginning of an important era in our lives. We, the Class of 1959, are gathered around the crystal ball. All eyes are gazing into the ball with the hope that the future which is about to be revealed will be bright and eventful. First we see the faces of Vie Fargo, Bob Waller, Judy Prowda and Bob Boyce with the names president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer respectively pinned on them. We see that a wise choice of officers will be made. Next the scene of the Freshman Valentine Dance comes into view. Bob Waller and Marjorie Seybold will be crowned king and queen. Oh, how ro- mantic this will be! A glance at the treasurer's report shows that class funds will be nearly doubled by the sale of Christmas cards. With such a successful first year everyone can hardly wait to see the highlights of the second. As the class in the crystal ball parades past, we cheer once more, for leading the procession is Don Pomeroy as president. Deb Decker as vice-president, Dick Pciper as secretary and Jewel Owens as treasurer. The picture in the ball flashes past a Leap Year Dance and then we find ourselves at one of our football games. Just think of the fun we will have at these games, espec- ially when it is raining or snowing so hard that we find it diffi- cult .even to See! Another glance at the treasurer's report shows that tht sale of booster pins and utility bags will not help to increase our treasury to any great extent. Nevertheless, we will have our fun this year. We now see that Butch Pomeroy will once again lead us in our Junior year. Behind him is Floyd Cole who will be vice- president, Phyllis Hatch who will be secretary and Jan Stedman who will be treasurer. Everyone awaits the next prophecies ex- pectantly, for this is the year we have all been waiting for. We sec that the Football Dance is our first big event. We are going to have a lot of fun trying to set up our decorative goal posts. What is this? An earth satellite floats past. We can see that we won’t be the only ones making news this year. Ah, the class rings! Everyone tries to pick out his but they flash by too fast. Someone murmurs that we ought to start saving our pennies be- cause the price tags, due to their excessive weight, didn't move as fast as the rings. The title ''Seven Sisters comes into view next. What is this? The scene changes to a stage and we see that it is the Junior Play. Two casts and a variety of costumes will make our play a little bit different from any other produced. We now find ourselves sharing one of those precious mo- ments at the Junior Prom. The theme is Stairway to the Stars. Judy Gilbert and Tom Van Dreason are our royalty for the eve- ning. We see ourselves gathered around the fountain throwing good-luck pennies into it. This is the night that we were looking forward to with great expectancy. We become starry-eyed as we dream about it. We see that the WS beanies will be the sales item for this year. The results of the sale will be a small profit and an over- supply of size large. We now find ourselves seated in the auditorium. We see that our Senior Class officers arc about to be elected. We hope that a wise choice will be made because this year will influence our lives more than any other. When Jim Steltenpohl is chosen as president, Jan Stedman as vice-president, Nancy Dcwan as secre- tary and Arnie Miller as treasurer, we know that our expectations will become a reality. Can this be true? All of the senior boys are dressed up in their very best regalia. Another view explains the phenomenon This is the day that our senior pictures are to be taken. Don't the boys look sharp! Why, we scarcely recognize them! Blue and white lights arc now glimmering in the crystal ball. With the theme White Fantasy” and blue and white decor- ations, this Christmas Dance will be a most unusual one. Our next view makes us jump with astonishment. It looks as though we seniors have taken over the school! What have we done with the teachers? Another scene assures us that they are still present. The only difference is that WE are doing the teaching. We will have learned to appreciate our teachers when THAT day ends! The record dance will be next on our agenda. The famous voice of Dave Sennett will keep things lively. We now see hectic days ahead; auditions, rehearsals and plans for our Talent Show will climax our social events for the year. We hope that many hidden talents will make this the best show ever presented. We are sorry to learn that we will not go on a Senior trip. However we are consoled when we learn that part of the money we will earn will buy many beautiful and famous paintings which will keep our memory alive. Some of our earnings will also help defray the expense of our Dinner Dance. And now the crystal ball reveals to us three scenes which will be everlasting in our memories. Baccalaureate, Commence- ment and the Dinner Dance are the final events that will close the book on this era of our lives. As we see ourselves in our graduation gowns it suddenly occurs to us that we have changed quite a bit. The youth in the crystal ball who have just graduated appear to be a completely different group of individuals from the entering freshmen who have gathered here today to look into the future. Thus the main events in our lives at WS will make history. And there will be many other things which we will never forget such as our friends, our teachers, the special jokes and say- ings, our short lived disputes, the building itself, our lockers, the trouble we will stir up, the good things we will do, and all the fete-a-fetes and the fun we will have together. . . . SEVEN SISTERS CLASS OF 1959 APRIL 25-26, 1958 We ran offstage with the applause still ringing in our ears. We had worked so hard during the past weeks and this was our reward. Our Seven Sisters were full of enthusiasm, chasing romeos both on and offstage at every opportunity. Our costumes were an extra attraction, and our lost lines and mistakes added to the general merriment. Saturday night after the play everyone went to an Open House at Judy Madden's where the two casts — Yes! We had two! — One for Friday night's performance, and one for Satur- day night — together with our advisors, Miss Clark and Mr. Devlin, chattered far into the night. Who among us can ever forget Seven Sisters? Betueen the acts: Mary Lewis, Con- nie Van Wie, Karen Noto, Joan Salm, Marge Seybold. ACTIVITIES CLASS OF 1959 JUNIOR PROM This was to be a different Junior Prom from any other in the world. It was our prom, our dream, our Stairuay to the Stars; and thus we named it. On Friday evening,' May 23, '58, the gym was transformed into a private world of moonlight blue. Gleaming stars of all shades were suspended above our heads. And as we danced on to the music of the Silver Moon Orchestra, we found a sparkling fountain between swings in a flower-studded garden. Later Tom Van Dreason and Judy Gilbert were led forth as King and Queen to sit under our own stairway to the stars, which added a mystic beauty to our night. We climbed the stairs, we descended them, and like a colorful dream we will often think back to that wonderful night. We worked, we learned, we loved and we lived. We were chal- lenged by our teachers, by our parents; and we shall continue to be chal- lenged as we pass through these doors to begin the new life that lies beyond. We shall remember the understanding and guidance given to us by our teachers. Although we may be separated, our memories of WS will linger on forever.
