HEALTH DEPARTMENT HEALTH STAFF OUR SCHOOL DOCTORS The staff of the SHEVERON is proud to ded- icate this page to our School Doctors: Dr. J. D. George, Sr., Dr. James Lawler, Dr. Theodore Prowda. A TRIBUTE Wc wish to pay special honor to Dr. John Dean George, Senior, who has taken an active interest in our school since he started his medical practice in Verona in 1901. As a young man, Dr. George taught school in his home school dis- trict of Redwood, Jefferson County, New York, for two years. Later he at- tended Potsdam Stare Normal School, from which he graduated in 1896. After one year as principal of the F.lementry School at Southwick. Massachusetts, he entered the Medical School of McGill University, Montreal, Canada, from which he graduated in 1901. That same year he came to Verona and started his medical practice. Because of his interest in school affairs, Dr. George was elected to the school board of the Verona Union Free School soon after his arrival, in Verona in 1901 and he served continuously for many years as board pres- ident. During his term of office, the hoard sponsored the building of a large addition to the Verona School, completed in 1928, which resulted in a larger attendance, a larger faculty, and a greater interest in school affairs by the community. Dr. George's son. Dr. T. D. George, Jr., is now serving as pres- ident of the W.S. School Board of Education. Dr. George, Sr., has served as school doctor at Verona and other schools ever since physical examinations were made by law a pare of the school program in 1912. Upon his retirement from the school board, he continued his duties as school doctor, serving today in the V.V.S. Junior • Senior High $chool and the Verona Elementary School. Dr. George, Sr., has served as school doctor at Verona and other area schools ever since physical examinations were made by law a parr of the school program of his own — all his sons following in his footsteps to become physicians. Dr. George has seen many developments in medical care in the schools. Typhoid fever, diphtheria, and polio were endemic in those early days, and three epidemics of small pox occurred in the town of Verona. The first clinic for diphtheria and smallpox was held in Verona in May, 1927, when 192 children received their first dose. Succeeding years brought tetanus and- whooping cough vaccines, and this last year brought to the schools the combined school clinics that resulted in the thrcc-dosc Salk Polio Vaccine being given to more than 1800 children — 90 per cent of the pre-school and school chidrcn of our school district. As a result of his long years of service to the community. Dr. George was recently honored by the New York State Medical Society with a fifty- year membership. The Madison County Medical Society presented Dr. George with the Milton R. Joy plaque in appreciation of fifty years of meritorious service to the people and medical profession of Madison County. In addition to his busy career. Dr. George is the recent author of a book on the genealogy and history of the George family, a copy of which is in the V.V.S. Verona School libraries. In recognition of his long years of service to our school and community, the SHEVERON is proud to salute Dr. George and to wish him many years of happiness, content with a life well spent in devotion and care for others. Mrs. M. Vergilito, Mrs. A. Wolfe, Mrs. J. Reilly, J. DiPietro. I DR. JOHN D. GEORGE, SR. 7
