We, the Class of 1958, see many new hopes and new dreams for the future. But happy memories will come to us as we leaf through the pages of our yearbook. This is your invitation to share with us our Senior year at V.V.S. June, 1958 Dear Miss Davies, Words cannot express our deep appreciation for the assistance and encouragement you have given us during the past four years at VVS. It is, in an effort to thank you for all that you have done to help in our class projects — especially our Senior Trip, that we de- dicate this 1958 SHEVERON to you. Miss Davies. SENIOR CLASS OF 1958 BOARD OF EDUCATION Clockwise Around Table: Dr. John George, Jr., President; Charles Pomeroy, Jr., Floyd Scheifele, Charles Donahue, John Black, John Deal, Charles Marshall, Arthur Agne. Absent: Haskell Fenner. ADMINISTRATION SUPERINTENDENT In these times of world pressures for the control of outer space, it is well to remember that the civilizations of the world must continue to exist side by side. The students of today are the parents of to- morrow. Through education, prepare yourselves for a well-rounded knowledge of the tools neces- sary to cope with the challenge of space control. Your well-equipped school with its staff of quali- fied teachers stands ready to serve your needs as a student if you but show the desire to learn. Know yourselves and know the world. WILLIAM T. THOMSON Superintendent Mrs. Ethel Warcup, Board Secretary; War- ner Frison, Clerk; Brian Leach, Business Manager. SECRETARIES Mrs. G. Silknetter, Mrs. M. Cassell, Mrs. R. Wettel. PRINCIPAL John B. Pilettc THE PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE We are happy to extend to you, the Class of 1958, our most sincere and heartiest congratulations. We wish you the best of luck and success for the future. May wc join your parents in sharing their happiness and pride in your achievement. They deserve congratulations, too. It has been a pleasure to know and work with you. While we like to feel that we have made some worthwhile contributions to your development and educational growth during the past six years, we know that you have left many values with us. Your splendid influence, individual and group parti- cipation in helping us to operate an efficient school arc deeply appreciated. We know that each one of you will give a good account of himself after he leaves school. We are de- pending on you. Please come back and visit us once in a while. We would be guilty of gross negli- gence if we failed to express our ap- preciation and gratitude for the splendid co-operation and valuable services rendered by our Student Council. Its contributions have been of inestimable value and influence. To the faculty, our dccpfclt thanks for their professional enthusiasm, loyalty, and support. VICE PRINCIPAL Wilbur F. Hoyt 6 John B. Pilette Principal GUIDANCE Mrs. Ruth Kreiter, Milton Jenkins. HEALTH DEPARTMENT HEALTH STAFF OUR SCHOOL DOCTORS The staff of the SHEVERON is proud to ded- icate this page to our School Doctors: Dr. J. D. George, Sr., Dr. James Lawler, Dr. Theodore Prowda. A TRIBUTE Wc wish to pay special honor to Dr. John Dean George, Senior, who has taken an active interest in our school since he started his medical practice in Verona in 1901. As a young man, Dr. George taught school in his home school dis- trict of Redwood, Jefferson County, New York, for two years. Later he at- tended Potsdam Stare Normal School, from which he graduated in 1896. After one year as principal of the F.lementry School at Southwick. Massachusetts, he entered the Medical School of McGill University, Montreal, Canada, from which he graduated in 1901. That same year he came to Verona and started his medical practice. Because of his interest in school affairs, Dr. George was elected to the school board of the Verona Union Free School soon after his arrival, in Verona in 1901 and he served continuously for many years as board pres- ident. During his term of office, the hoard sponsored the building of a large addition to the Verona School, completed in 1928, which resulted in a larger attendance, a larger faculty, and a greater interest in school affairs by the community. Dr. George's son. Dr. T. D. George, Jr., is now serving as pres- ident of the W.S. School Board of Education. Dr. George, Sr., has served as school doctor at Verona and other schools ever since physical examinations were made by law a pare of the school program in 1912. Upon his retirement from the school board, he continued his duties as school doctor, serving today in the V.V.S. Junior • Senior High $chool and the Verona Elementary School. Dr. George, Sr., has served as school doctor at Verona and other area schools ever since physical examinations were made by law a parr of the school program of his own — all his sons following in his footsteps to become physicians. Dr. George has seen many developments in medical care in the schools. Typhoid fever, diphtheria, and polio were endemic in those early days, and three epidemics of small pox occurred in the town of Verona. The first clinic for diphtheria and smallpox was held in Verona in May, 1927, when 192 children received their first dose. Succeeding years brought tetanus and- whooping cough vaccines, and this last year brought to the schools the combined school clinics that resulted in the thrcc-dosc Salk Polio Vaccine being given to more than 1800 children — 90 per cent of the pre-school and school chidrcn of our school district. As a result of his long years of service to the community. Dr. George was recently honored by the New York State Medical Society with a fifty- year membership. The Madison County Medical Society presented Dr. George with the Milton R. Joy plaque in appreciation of fifty years of meritorious service to the people and medical profession of Madison County. In addition to his busy career. Dr. George is the recent author of a book on the genealogy and history of the George family, a copy of which is in the V.V.S. Verona School libraries. In recognition of his long years of service to our school and community, the SHEVERON is proud to salute Dr. George and to wish him many years of happiness, content with a life well spent in devotion and care for others. Shanghaied good ol' Joe” (Bierworth, that is) for president. Lots of campaigning at polls. Big headaches for Miss Davies, Miss Vaughn, Mr. Dominy, Mr. Hruby, and Mr. Odell. We had fun. December 1954 . . . Spent hours on end making Christ- mas corsages. Many casualties from bent pins. But much money. Learned of Mr. Dominy’s hidden talent for mak- ing bows. February 1955 ■ ■ . Moved into new school! Together at last! Mutual experience of being lost in space formed fast friendships: Melting pot produced flu bug that bit us all. Closed school for week. What joy for us fresh- men! June 1955 . . . Advisors and students take well-earned vacation. September 1955 . . . Resumed activities. Fired with de- termination to improve. Attended first class meeting with most honorable intentions. Not knowing what plurality” meant and resolved not to show ignorance, de- cided to elect by majority” vote. First mistake. Spent whole period electing Tina Vanderwall president. Rest of slate elected next day by plurality.” Advisors: Miss Davies, Mrs. Snyder, Mr. Clark, and Mr. Teeter. Much blowing of tops. November 1955 ■ ■ ■ Frosty Hoedown introduced us to upper classmen. Packed Verona gym. Experience in cooking hot dogs for a crowd to come in handy at foot- ball games this year. Situation back to normal, good in- tentions vanished. Miss Davies carrying ball. Profits sufficient to get us as far as Utica on Washington trip. December 1955 . . . More Christmas corsages. Fewer casualties due to greater skill. Great activity spurred by effort to use up material and eliminate project. May 1956 . . . Lou Barile Dance . . . Capacity crowd. Big success. This bonanza carried us as far as Albany on Washington trip. End-of-year burst of energy resulted in selling car plates (made of iron . . . they won't rust!); also poppit beads (rustproof). June 1956 . . Decorated auditorium for Baccalaureate and Commencement. Was it ever hot! Wilted with the peonies. September 1956 . . . Jaunty juniors! Elected Steve Wal- lace president by plurality. Advisors: Miss Davies, Mrs. Wellman, Mr. Glazier. Resolved not to goof off. (Had no choice.) November 1956 . . . Football Dance . . . Jackie Heuer, Queen. Music by Collegians. Spent hours on decorations. Had wonderful time and made money . . . Sold book covers. (Love those grade school kids!) Took orders for school jackets; not much money but fun for all! December 1956 . . . No Christmas corsages. January 1957 . . . ]. P. Abaray Dance. Big crowd. Profits carried us to New York. June 1957 . . . Elected officers in June because of busy year ahead. Paul Hummel chosen as captain to guide us through final year. Recessed for vacation. Plan to rest up for Senior Trip. September 1957 . . . Sold programs and hot dogs at foot- ball games . . . Hot dog, anyone? . . . Sold bookcovers, tablets, pencils, anything saleable we could get our hands on, at School Store. Ran concession at School Fair. Big attraction — booth where our senior boys stuck their heads through canvas, and students paid to throw sponges at same. What we won't do for money! October 1957 . . . Record Dance with Roger Christian from WONG emceeing. Had kids from all area schools attending. Something of a riot . . . Had our Senior in- dividuals taken for yearbook. Asian Flu hit and closed school for four days. November 2, 1957 . . . Won first Tri-Valley Football Championship, beating Canastota 19 to 7. November 1957 . . . Sadie Hawkins Dance. All local Lil Abners and Daisy Maes attended. Senior Play. Since dinner motif was so successful in previous year, decided to present Onions in the Stew,” a rollicking comedy on both sides of the curtain. Sputnik!! December 1957 . . . Sold refreshments at basketball games. Figures beginning to show strain of constant eating. Christmas Dance climaxed 1957 at school. Re- cessed for Christmas vacation. Santa Claus was good to all us Seniors. January 1958 . . . Record Dance with J. P. Abaray from WKAL. February 1958 . . . Big Blizzard. Joy of snow days” tempered with worry. Would this cut short our Senior Trip? March 1958 . . . Talent 'Show. Never knew we had so much local talent. Another record dance with local D. J. spinning the discs. April 4, 1958 . . . Weeks of budgeting, wardrobe plan- ning, four years of work, work, work and the great day was here at last. Left on our SENIOR TRIP. Can only say it lived up to all our expectations. June 22, 1958 . . . Baccalaureate. Wore caps and gowns for first time. June 23, 1958 . . . Graduation ... the day we’ve been looking forward to ever since we began our voyage through high school. Now that it is almost upon us we face it with mixed emotions. June 24, 1958 . . . Dinner Dance. Together as alumni for the first time. Tomorrow we go our separate ways. But through the years ahead, this yearbook will be a magic carpet that takes us back to these happy days at VVS. We’ll be seeing you! THE VVS BASKETBALL TEAM won the Tri-Valley League Championship, going through the league schedule undefeated with a 15-0 rec- ord. Two non-league games were lost to Little Falls, last year’s Sectional Champs, 50 - 40. Close games were dropped to UFA 58 - 56; and to Oneonta 59-56. This made the season’s record 115-3. Cliff Luyk led scoring with 488 points in 18 games for a 27.1 average. Joe Bierworth 177 points Wayne Hull 152 points Deb Decker 139 points Butch Pomeroy 85 points JUNIOR VARSITY The Junior Varsity Basket- ball team had a very success- ful season, winning 12 games while dropping only 5 of their 17-game schedule. In achiev- ing this record the J.V.’s had to overcome obstacles; such as, limited practices and in- sufficient height. Coach Mc- Kee’s strategy for his team’s success was a full-court press defensively, and a fast-break- ing team offensively. These ingredients were the key to the success of the J.V. Team during the '57 - ’58 season.
