■ 1 1954 VERNON - VERONA - SHERRILL CENTRAL SCHOOL ALWA WATER V.V.S. CENTRAL SCHOOL. a%eiwwl Our schools with their friendly walls hold fond memories of happy hours, cherished friendships, serious endeavor and lasting achievement. We, the last class to graduate from the old buildings, are happy to complete our courses within these walls we entered four years ago, for there is a spirit and a tradition that lingers and per- meates each nook and corner. We feel that we have helped to establish more firmly everything for which our school stands. We hope that the highest traditions of all the schools will become the common heritage of the new one. It is with this thought that we give to you, our successors, the passport to the future. 3 Jxi te o-f- Cantetvti, Pages Administration ...................................................7-12 Seniors.................................................... 13-38 Classes...................................................39-48 Sports................................................49-62 Activities ........................................63-72 Elementary Grades..............................73-92 Advertising ...............................93-115 JAe ALa 5 (. 1 SXedicated, JALs, IjeatAoofo 3 : MISS DAVIES Miss Sarah Davies, for her unselfish effort on be- half of our class in our Junior year, giving many extra hours of her time to help us toward our Senior goal; we feel that without her encouragement, our Senior trip would have remained just a dream. Up to that time, the editors spent an average of two or three nights a week working on the book. After planning its general layout, pictures had to be taken, copy written and art work done. Although the job seemed endless, the work was done at last and the yearbook for ’54 was off to press. BUSINESS STAFF Front row: E. Barclay, P. St. Auburn, J. Smith. Second row: E. Seifert. N. The Board of Education is composed of nine elected qualified voters of the city school district who must be residents of the district for three years prior to their election. The group spends countless hours in providing our school district with both the essentials and luxuries for a good education. They are, at present, constantly working towards the fall opening of our new Junior-Senior High School building. It is to these unselfish citizens, that we students owe a sincere Thank You! Mr. A. Warner Prison, who is the Treasurer of the school district, receives all school moneys and disburses these moneys upon receiving warrants approved by the Board of Education. Mrs. Ethel Warcup, as Secretary of the Board of Education, keeps the minutes of all meetings and the records for the district. She also takes care of financial statements and the payroll. 8 Mr. Walter Frisson and Mrs. Ethel S. Warcup. Sup aatendent MR. WILLIAM T. THOMPSON The completion of the new Junior-Senior High School Building this year begins the second chapter in the history of the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Central School System. It will be the first modern school building to be erected in the district in twenty-five years. To the Parents, Board of Education, Teachers, and others who have made this building a reality, the pupils represented in this Yearbook say, 'Thanks for your attention to our school building needs.’ ” SWincipjcd MR. JOHN B. PILLETTE I wish to congratulate members of the yearbook staff for the success- ful publication of the Sheveron. This achievement exemplifies what stu- dents are capable of doing for their school. I also want the members of the Student Councils, the Executive Council, and the student body to know that I have appreciated their splendid cooperation since becoming principal of the V. V. S. Central School. To the Class of 1954: mv most sincere congratulations and best wishes for your success and hap- piness.” Vice-t Witicifiat MR. WILBUR F. HOYT To The Class of 1954: As the old saying goes; 'East is East and West is West and never the twain shall meet.’ However, in spite of our seeming separation in V. V. S. territorially, you have done much to bring us together as a unit and to prepare us for our joint operation in one building, after you have departed from our midst. My best wishes go with you from the east and you from the west, and may you continue your chartered labored successfully against the obstacles which have confronted you here.” 9 Gxhninla,t%ate-,ca, Mr. Seward B. (LS) THE SENIOR CLASS. 30 And now it is time to announce the winners of our annual pizza-eating contest. The grand award consists of two tickets to Mexico and the winners are — Paula and Joel! This is your announcer Paul Disburger, sign- ing off for ’Pody's Potato Chips’ and reminding you to tune in again for ’This Is Your Strife,’ starring Doris Decker and Rollin Kitchen.’’ Two weeks later we find our happy couple stepping out of Fred Witchley’s taxi as red cap Dick Marshall rushes up to grab their bags. Debating over which magazine to buy, they finally choose one with Power’s model Sue Silliman on the cover. Should be interesting — hum? Just as the train is pulling out of the station they manage to grab the railing of the caboose and pull themselves aboard. Having neglected to buy tickets they crawl under the seats when conductor Lloyd Fike walks by. They are very glad when New York, their first stopover, is reached as they find their position quite tiring. After registering at the famous Nightmare Hotel,” run by Jim Austin and Gordy Haight, they head for the Stork Club which is featuring Kicking” Kathryn Janes and her Rollicking Rovers,” Kim Wood, Bernie Staple and Amos Barclay. The second attraction is Gorgeous” George Arnott and his Rhythm Riders,” Phil Merry and Bob Hennessy. Gorgeous” George is a hot man with a trumpet and played such pieces as His Feet too Big for de Bed” and Picadilly Tilly!” After head-waiter Ted Collins brings them an enormous bill, they sneak out a side exit to freedom. Once back at the hotel they are eyed suspiciously by Wayne Rauscher, the hotel dick. Wayne has taken this position as his new shoe store is not yet in operation. Heading for the elevator, they are whizzed up eleven floors by elevator girl Alma Collins. Upon opening the door, Paula shrieks, There’s a man looking in the window!” But this turns out merely to be Cliff Kitchen, the hotel’s window washer. After such a scare Paula decides she needs a sedative which is brought by irate bell hop Tom Ray. Thus they retire for the night. The next morning finds them being settled on the plane by stewardess Nancy Downey. As they are about to take off there is a great commotion and three men board the plane. We learn later that they are the famous political candidates Jolly” Jerome, who is running for the presidency, Peppy” Pete St. Auburn who is running for the vice-presidency, and Wiley” Wayne Evans, who is just plain running. Pilot Don Bellinger gets his signal and they take off. After an hour of leisure, there is a strange sound in the baggage compartment and Alice Scheible, JoAnn Larrabee and Carolyn Smith are discovered as stowaways. Upon being questioned, they admit robbing Hennessy’s Hash House” and are kept in custody until we reach our destination. The plane glides down the runway at Laredo and customs officials Dick Abel and Wilbur Laube take over. The streets are filled with vendors shouting their wares, the odor of hot tortillas fills the air, and all available wail space is covered with advertisements lauding Daring” Doug Richards, the famous matador. En route to their host’s home they meet the famous movie actress, Anita Lampman, who is on vacation and invites them to her cocktail party the following eve- ning, which is the eve of their departure. When they find the hacienda, they are greeted by Colleen and Bob Zeller and their ten children. Night falls, narrowly missing them, and they venture out into the star-filled streets. They hear the gentle strum of guitars and find that Marshall Conover, Eddie Dodge, and Sheldon Jones are playing them for the famous dancing duo, Pat Loomis and Jarry Anderson. Feeling hunger pangs, they stop at Breck’s Beanery” where they are served a real Mexican dish consisting of ham- burg and French fries by witty” waitress Elain Durant. As we look in upon them the next afternoon, they are heading for the bullfight arena when they are stopped by an old friend, Buck Private” Northrup. He informs them that he has been stationed here for six years and that Paul Rainboth, Dick Rebres, and Rog Gerwig are also in his unit. Approaching the ticket window, whom do they recognize behind it but Arlene Yaddaw. Three smiling senoritas, Janet Williams, Cecile Parent, and Judy Scheifele are selling petunias at the entrance and Paula has a hard time pulling Joel through the gate. He only buys six dozen, however, so she shouldn’t be too hard on him. Once inside they are immediately dazzled by the brilliant spectacle. First to enter are three pallid pica- dores, Joyce VanDreason, Anne West, and Reva Lynch, mounted on blindfolded old horses and carrying pikes which they stick into the bull to enrage him. Following them are three boastful banderilleros, Marilyn Richard- son, Joyce Conley and Shirley Detmer, who place darts in the bull's neck. With a loud fanfare of trumpets, Daring Doug” enters the arena. The bull is actually Nick Vaderwall in disguise, as Mexico is rather short on them this season. Daring Doug” takes one look at the ferocious beast, drops his cape and flees for the nearest exit. Paula and Joel are rather disappointed so they drop their popcorn boxes and leave. In their hurry to get out into the street to a cock fight, they stumble over the feet of Jim McGrath, taking his afternoon siesta. Doris Cronin and Eleanor Seifert, the owners of the roosters, are both cheering their birds on, and each has his own followers. Joan Masner, the great Mexican Tango and Rhumba Queen, Jeanette Smith, a wealthy sheepherder, Dick Parker, a member of high position in the government and Bill McNeill, a poor peasant, are among the happy on-lookers. The next morning we find them on their burros en route to the cocktail party. They are met at the door by Clever Charlie” Irwin, the famous magician. Drinks are passed by Delwin Regner and George Gafner, and they choose Ida's Intoxicating Kickapoo Joy Juice.” Other celebrities present are Judy Maxson, a famous skunk-deodorizer, Sandy Endemann, the Mexican Jump- ing Bean, and Nancy Kelts, a balloon vendor now unemployed because Lee Adams and Pete Dwyer popped them when her back was turned. In the next room a poker game is in full swing. In one corner with a green eye shade resting on his head is Ron Hahn, dealing out chips, and his partner, Norman Skinner, taking in money from Alex Janowski and Jim Kinne. Joel joins the game and quickly loses all his money, plus the return tickets. We leave them now, as they hitch-hike homeward, reminiscing about the peaceful siestas, colorful peons, and gay fiestas of Mexico. 31 NAME . 1. Dick Abel 2. Lee Adams 3. Jarry Anderson 4. When he was faced with the fact that Snoddy would get married he proposed to her and they were married immediately. VERNON - SHERRILL JUNIOR PLAY When Johnny Takes the Cake” opens, it is the afternoon of the tryouts for the class play and Johnny Hale, played by Nick Vanderwall, is busily rehearsing for the lead part. However, his younger sister Janet, Norma Skinner, and his older sister Sylvia, Nancy Kelts, continually interrupt by insisting upon helping him. Then trouble in the form of his girl- friend Annabelle, Jeanette Smith, enters. With her is Ham Higgins, Charles Salm, Johnny’s rival both for the part in the play and a date with Annabelle. She finally agrees to go to the dance with the boy who gets the part. Soon after, Ellie, the maid, Eleanore Seifert, brings in a cake for Johnny, supposedly from his girl but really sent by Ham. When he eats it, he becomes violently sick. Still determined to try out that afternoon, Johnny is just about to collapse when Janet walks in with Professor Sewell, George Arnott, who is in charge of the tryouts. After hearing both Ham and Johnny, as well as the true story of Johnny's illness, the Professor gives the part to Johnny, and Johnny takes Annabelle to the dance. Not enough boys from the freshman class went out for the team to even play a schedule. Those boys on the varsity who had little or no experience were moved down, and together with the willing freshmen, made up the junior varsity. The team clayed five games, and although they went through the season without registering a win, they gained enough experience so that they should help to strengthen the V. V. S. regulars next year. Stading: J. McNeil, P. Ferris, R. Duncan, B. Lanz, B. Mayshek, and R. Reed. Kneeling: Mr. Borgononi, J. George, B. Bolton, and R. Mumford. VxVMitlf The J. V. Basketball team had a most successful season, winning 85 per cent of their game schedule. Due to this win- ning” experience of ’53-’54, the Junior Varsity should make a promising contribution to the ’54-’55 Varsity club. Congratula- tions are in order to both Coach Borgononi and the J. V.’s for their excellent record this year. 56 Vxvtaity, 6Aeev£eadex Sandra Endemann, Janet Kenna, Pody Rich, Anita Luyk, Mary Boyce, Ida Cornish, Paula Faun, Rhoda Burnham. They started their year of activity by holding a most successful school fair. Delegates were sent in October to the National F. F. A. Convention. Next on the agenda was the Father-Son banquet at which approximately 100 people thoroughly en- joyed themselves. It was at this affair that the organization was presented with a %-ton pick-up truck by Sherrill City Garage and also the F. F. A. Queen, Jo Ann Larrabee, was crowned and presented with an F. F. A. jacket. This group of boys sponsor seed sales each year and by using teams they create competition. This year’s F. F. A. State Convention is to be held in Cobleskill at which time Empire Farmer awards are made. This chapter also sends representatives for the State F. F. A. Band. Under the direction of Mr. DeKay, their advisor, these boys handle the general management of the entire school farm which is at the new school site. A hearty applause for these — Future Farmers! 70 Juniv t S ec%etwuea. Seated: K. Janes, C. Smith, J. Larrabee, A. West. Standing: I. Cornish, C. Parent, Mrs. Wellman, J. Scheifele, J.
