Among the first trailblazers to cross the Western plains was Colonel Josiah Pugh Wilbarger from Bourbon County, Kentucky —— colonist, survevor, teacher, and patriot. Wilbarger, aman with an insatiable dream of tam- ing the American west, came to Texas in 1827 with Steven FL Austin. Despite vicious encounters with the elements and hostile Indians.he was not prevented from surveying a seemingly endless expanse of Texas soil. fieone time in his career, he was scalped and left for dead bythe Indians, but his endurance was such that he continued to establish many major colonies and forts throughout the plains, including “Wilbarger’s Bend” on the ( olorado River in Bastrop County, where he eventually made his home.

On February 1, 1858, Wilbarger County, Texas, was named in honor of his unselfish dedication. In the following pages, the 1978 Trailblazer reflects the spirit of the past by remembering some of the people and places of years gone by in an effort to retain an image of those who faithfully provided Wilbarger County and Vernon, Texas, witha foundation on which to build a lasting future.
