The Verhian 1962 VERMONTVILLE HIGH SCHOOL Vermontville, Michigan Volume 15 MRS. INGRID NORTHRUP We, the Verhian Staff of 1962, respectfully dedicate our yearbook to Mrs. Ingrid Northrup. We would like, at this time, to thank her for all the assistance and time she has given to us. Her devotion and guidance has made it possible for many year- books of our school to be produced, for which we are grateful. Verhian Staff ADMINISTRA TION Board of Education SEATED: M. Wilson, Sec.; M. Slout. STANDING: C. Thrun, L, Malcuit, Treas.; E. Gehman, B. Ommen Sr., R. Zemke, Pres. WALTER C. JENVEY JR. Mr. Jenvey came to us from Lake Orion, August, 1956. He became the Superintendent of Vermontville in Jan- uary of 1960. He graduated from Michigan State University where he received his B.A. and M.A. degrees. Superintendent Principal MR. ARVIN ROBERSON These are the times that try men's souls, spoken by an American from another era during a time of great crises. This is undoubtably true today, possibly even more so, for it is unlikely man will ever be faced with more trials and tribulations than he is today. Abraham Lincoln once said, True teaching does not give knowledge, but stimulates pupils to gain it. We in the teaching profession have done our utmost to stimulate you and others like you, to meet and assist in solving the many problems facing this coun- try and the world, and to take your place along side of your fellow man as an active and useful member of society. Good Luck, Class of 1962, and remember that the road to success contains numerous pitfalls. Bus Drivers L. tor.: L. Kilpatrick, M. Johnson, B. Makley, L. Joppie, L. Musser, C. Benton, R. Smith. Starting at the be- ginning of the year it played at every home football game and also participated in the U. of M. Band Day. The band also gave a Winter Concert which the student body enjoyed very much. Starting the Second Semester the band was under the direction of Mr. Montgomery. During this semester the band participated in: the District Band Festival and came out with a Second award; led the parade at the Maple Syrup Festival; and gave an excellent Spring Con- cert. As its final activity the band led the parade Memorial Day. Congratulations to the band, as they have done a wonderful job this year. We really enjoyed the music. The band would like to thank Mr. Humphreys for the eleven years he has given to the Vermontville Band. Without his help and patience our band would not have succeeded. Mr. Robert Montgomery graduated from the Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas, where he received his B.M.E. degree. He was the music director of the Broad- way Stock Theater in Kansas. He came to Lansing this winter to attend M.S.U. He is a member of the Lansing Symphony, and M.S.U. Television Orchestra. The Jazz Band, of which he is a member, took top honors in National competition in the Notre Dame Jazz Festival. He has played the trumpet professionally for nine years, and came to Vermontville High School in January of 1962 to become the director of our band. of Music The Vermontville High School Marching Band lined up and ready to lead the Maple Syrup Festi- val parade. This year the National theme for FFA is Honoring Rural Opportunities and Responsibili- ties. The boys belonging to the Future Farmers of America have unlimited opportunities before them in the field of agriculture. They have but to develop these opportunities to the fullest of their abilities. Leadership and responsibility are qualities which boys must acquire to succeed in life. If you walked into room 31 this year, you might have heard a voice seeming to come from nowhere giving a book report, reciting, or asking questions. Another Vermontville first this year was the telephone speaker system installed for Bill Zellers, homebound seventh grade student. Bill was able to hear all class activities and participate with the rest of the class. He completed the seventh grade with a high scholastic average, and will probably handle his eighth grade in much the same fashion. Bill is shown here with a member of the Elks Club which is spon- soring Bill in this program. A THLETICS L. Here we see the team, coaches, cheerleaders, and followers. To keep our team going we have to back them with encouragement and lots of noise. With smiles of joy the king and queen, Shirel Boyer and Rita Trowbridge, had a wonderful time at the 1961 Football Home- coming Dance held after the BIG game. 1961 Football Homecoming KICK FOR VICTORY The class of '64 won first place in the Football Homecoming Parade. Jama Boyer was their candidate for queen. Hugh Moore has everything under control here as he tackles his opponent. With speed and much determination our boys didn’t give up this season, even though they took some bad falls. It's teamwork like this that makes you want to get out on the field and get into the fun. All together now, 1-2-3 The ball carrier isn't the only one that should get the credit. Can you imagine where he would be if he were out there alone? Here again we see our boys working as a team. After the BIG game came the Homecoming Dance for the king and queen and their court. Whether you're dancing or just standing around talking, you have a great time. (Left to Right): J. Zellers; L.
