CLASS lllSTOBY I remember the day un September of 1951 the thurty fuve energetuc freshmen were assugned to an udealust, Mr Humphrey, un room 31 We settled down long enough to elect a new gurl, Anna Lou Marcum, presudent Ann Tubbs, vuce presudent, Ray De Bar treasurer, and secretary Cordelua Foote, whom we later lost to Nashvulle Our next gala occasuon was the unutuatuon whuch we looked forward to wuth antucupa tuon and apprehensuon Luttle dud we know of the barbaruans who were to feed us hot peppers, worms, owls eyes, ad nauseam Ronnue Moran won the pruze for the best costume, an lnduan outfut, taulored for the nught In the sprung we rallued forces to manage a hot dog stand at the Syrup Festuval where Corky Foote reugned as Queen, and to sell popat the baseball games Thus we leftS126 00 un the treasury to start our sophomore year Meanwhule our number had dumunushed to thurty one havung also lost Loree Border, Eleanor Wells Marvun Wuser, Ruchard Powers, and Yvonne Harwood but havung gauned Yvonne Saunders and Benny Dove The faculty noted a great change un us by September of 1952 There were thurty two of us as Harry Reynolds had louned the group as well as Mrs Montgomery as advusor We orugunated he Freshman Sophomore Fueld Day as a more cuvuluzed procedure for unutuatuon Of course we dud smear a luttle lupstuck, frughten a few, and hard boul our eggs for the eqq throw but not the freshman s and let them know who was superuor The class offucers were as follows presudent, Bruce Malcuut vuce presudent, LeRoy Hummel, secretary Lowell Steward Treasurer, Marlene Faust Our furst enterpruse un money makung was the sale of plaques wuth LeRoy Hummel and Janet Hokanson leaders of two fughtung teams The losung sude paud off wuth a supper and afterwards we had a dancung lesson The refreshment concessuon at the basketball games was very successful both for profut and wxllung workers Here we learned cooperatuon and responsubuluty and knewwe had the hardest workung class un school From then on our reputatuon was at stake For the Syrup Festuval we buult a float, One Hundred Years of Progress, wuth an old red bruck school and the new modern Maplewood whuch had been deducated that year Of course we sent Andy Austun out alone un the wund to pulot the float We nearly lost ut but wuth a luttle furst aud we funally won second pruze We also buult a sturdy booth and sold hot dogs Our queen s escorts were Marlene Faust and LeRoy Hummel Thus year we lost from our membershup roll Yvonne Sauclers, Don Thompson Nancy Wrusley Betty Norrus, Harry Reynolds, and Allen Eaton When we returned un 1953 we had gauned Gene Gray lost Davud Wult Ray De Bar and Joyce Thompson Thus we numbered twenty one Durung thus uunuor year we also lost Fauth Walter and John Wolscheud and thencefore became known as the nousy nnneteen The furst week of school our class rungs arruved We re elected Bruce Malcuut, pres udent LeRoy Hummel, vuce presudent, Marlene Faust, secretary, and Ann Tubbs, treasurer Mrs Montgomery advusor Our magazune druve was over the top, S700 OO, wuth Ann Tubbs' team wunnung from Janet Hokanson s who paud off wuth a turkey supper We sold sweat shurts and scarves for addutuonal lucre, along wuth memory books On Aprul 2, we made our debut behund the footlughts un Funders Creepers Andy as gramp un the red nught shurt, and LeRoy and Gene, two young fruends unvolved un pranks were hularuous characters We rallued at Connue Woodard s for food and fun Then came the prom' We were proud of our fabulous Stork Club settung and dudn't begrudge the tume and energy Under a canopy of mudnught sky, stars shunung, soft musuc playung, we danced Mass Boyd was acclaumed the best speaker ever Agaun we buult a float The Bunyan Syrup Can un alumunum foul Agaun the wund was our undoung, but thus tume we lost the battle enturely We would have won, tool Our escorts for the queen were Marlene and Andy The tradutuonal hot dog booth was runnung once more . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1 I . . . . .... . . .. .. . , . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ... . . . . . . . 1 . . . . - .. . . . ..
