VARSITY HOCKEY The Varsity Hockey team, coached by Mr. Choukas and led by Captain Crawford Sweeley, had a fair season. The veteran nucleus of Crawford Sweeley, Ted Okie, Bob Laughton, Ward Kenny, and Bill Bosworth was augmented largely by inexperienced players. Vermont's untested team met a strong and experienced Deerfield squad in the first game of the season and lost, 16-1, its lone goal coming when Captain Sweeley received the puck at the blue line and went in on a solo. This defeat didnft discourage the squad, and they kept up the spirit which they had had from the first day of practice. The Wildcats lost their next game to Mount Hermon, 8-1. V.A. fought hard but did not yet have the organization necessary to beat a strong club. The Varsity then lost twice in succession to K.U.A., in the Winter Carnival games of the two schools. On its own ice in the first of these two games, V.A. was unable to get going despite enthusiastic support from students and their datm on the sidelines. At Meriden, K.U.A. managed to shut out the Wildcats again, in spite of spirited play by the offensive lines and staunch goal-tending by Kurt Westergren. On a clear, cold day the Varsity played the Alumni All-Stars, but the grads proved too strong for the younger team and won, 6-3. Vermont finally got its first victory, a long-awaited and deserved one, as they beat Hanover High School, 8-0. All three lines did a good job in this game, particularly the first line composed of Sweeley, Okie, and Laughton. The squad then journeyed down to Williams College to play the Freshmen but lost by a score of 12-1. The V.A. pucksters went to Deerfield to take on the Big Green in a heard-fought game. This turned out to be one of V.A.'s finest games, although the score was 10-1 in Deer- field's favor when the final buzzer sounded. Laughton, Okie, and Sweeley again stood out on offense, while hard-playing Ward Kenny's defensive play did much to slow down the Green men. The team wound up the season in a blaze of glory, defeating Hanover High School again on Darthmouth ice. Goalies Kurt Westergren and John Anderson held the northerners to three goals, while Sweeley, Kenny, Okkie, Laughton, Compson, and Lardner all chipped in to total nine points for V.A. Kenny played his usual game on defense.
