VARSITY SKIING At the beginning of the season the outlook for the Varsity ski team was dim, as there were only three skiers returning from last year,s squad. But these three, Mark Ottey, .l.D. Reynolds, and Sam Bartow, were soon surrounded by a shell of newcomers, includ- ing Mike Gallagher, Bob Morse, Brad Caswell, and ,Ian Bower. The first competition was a Nordic meet with Mount Hermon, which revealed a strong potential in both jumping and cross country. This decisive victory was followed by the V.A. Winter Carnival in which V.A. was host to Kimball Union Academy, Dart- mouth Freshmen, and Deerfield Academy. Darthmouth had a strong team, especially in the Alpine events, but our even stronger Vermont team came through and won with powerful permormances in the Nordic events. Vermont Academy then traveled north to the Kimball Union Academy Winter Carnival, where a lack of depth in the slalom and downhill forced V.A. into second place behind Holdemess and ahead of Kimball Union Academy. Next week the Varsity traveled east to meet a strong Proctor Academy team. Badly handicapped by the absence of Mark Ottey and Sam Bartow, who were at another ski meet, V.A. was quite badly beaten by this ski school. A highlight of the season was ID. Reynoldis paring of the downhill record from 51.8 to 48.5 seconds in the meet on Feb. 27 with Williams Frosh and Dublin School, which Vermont won rather easily. In what is usually the most important single meet of the season, the Eastern Ski Association Prep School Championships, V.A. was put completely out of the running by a bad break. In the slalom racing, several disqualifications forced V.A. to take a loss of 50 points in the scoring. Excellent performances in the other events, which might have put Vermont in first place otherwise, could not make up for this loss. In the meet, which was held at Middlebury College, Mike Gallagher won the cross country, Bob Morse and ,l.D. Reynolds did a good job on the downhill trail, and Sam Bartow did very well in the jumping. Throughout the season, Reynolds led the downhill racing, Mark Ottey and Sam Bartow consistently jumped superbly, and Mike Gallagher lived up to his reputation as one of the best young cross-country skiers in the nation by turning in stellar perform- ances at nearly every meet. As a result of his proficiency in jumping, Mark Ottey was selected eastern representative in the National .Iunior Championships.

Brown, Tarshis, Mr. Van Order fcoach.J Front row: Gleason, Geiger, Angell fcaptainl, Hubert, Steinhoff. THIRD BASKETBALL The Third Team had a good season this year, despite the fact that Coach Van Order had had very little experience with basketball and consequently had to learn with the team. The team finished with a record of 4 wins, 1 loss. The Third Team is made up of those boys who do not have the experience and height necessary to make the l.V.,s, augmented by those boys who wish to play more in competition than would be possible if they were on the second or third string of the l.V.7s. The first two games of the season, with Springfield, were won easily after slow starts. After defeating K.U.A., the team lost to Bellows Falls and then beat K.U.A. again. A large part of the teamls success can be accounted for by George Steinhoffls height and defensive ability, Captain Brian Angell's spirit and determination, Don Hubert's aggressiveness, and Marshall Glea- sons' shooting ability, plus the talents of Tom Talbot and Peter Geiger.
