VARSITY FOOTBALL Rain played an important part in the outcome of most of this seasonis football games, since on four Saturdays rain made it impossible to employ the passing ability of quarterback John Antosca. How- ever, when the aerial game was possible, Jim Haley and Mark Ottey proved adept at snagging almost any variety of pass. When the team switched to a ground attack, the running skills of Bob Laughton produced needed points. Laughton was high scorer for the season with 26 points. Porter Hulett, J. D. Reynolds, George Yeomans, Don Erion, and Bill Bose were solid assets in defensive play. The first game, played at home, was lost to a strong Williston team, 36-8. Completely out-played in the first half, Vermont came back in the second half to play an improved game and score its only touchdown of the game. The Wildcats hoped to repeat their last year's history-making defeat of Deerfield, but the final score in the game played away was l4-0 in Deerfield's favor. The Vermonters played on even terms with Deerfield, but' a few critical plays made a big difference in a game that could have gone either way. An intercepted V.A. pass and the halftime whistleis blowing with V.A. on the Deerfieldis one-yard line spelled the difference. On Parents, Weekend the team was in high spirits for the Wilbraham game and put on a good show for their friends and relatives in the audience. Vermont, plainly the stronger team, completely out- played the visitors and won 22-O. Rain on October 24 made it necessary to postpone the New Hampton game until the following Mon- day. The team met a very strong New Hampton club on its own field after a grueling trip. Playing only mediocre ball during the first half and losing at the half by twenty points, the team bounced back in the second half to score once in the third quarter and twice in the fourth before they finally lost 22-28. The following week the team traveled to Cushing Academy where they played on a mud-Covered field which made both ground attacks and passing plays difficult. Bob Laughton scored V.A.'s touch- down. while Cushing scored on a recovered fumble in the Wildcats, end zone to tie Vermont, 6-6. V.A. suffered another defeat when a strong Mount Hermon team marred the Homecoming celebra- tion by overpowering Vermont llll-0. The team and the school were fired up for the last game of the season, the traditional game with K.U.A. The whole school journeyed to Kimball Union to cheer the squad on to a 20-8 win. Bob Laughton and ,lim Haley scored touchdowns, and Mark Ottey made the extra-point kicks. With the fervent leadership of Captain Penn Lardner and the fine coaching of Mr. Lucy and Mr. Choukas, the team played some good ball games. It was a good season despite the 2-4-I record.
