This year the annual was published by the entire high school rather than by just the senior class. DEBATE if P l Patty Frankenfeld, Bill Conaway, Ann Helstrom, Bill Ufford, Betty Golz Instructor--Miss Trione, Joy Golz, Eileen Lynch, Phyllis Searight The debate squad during the past year participated in 60 debates. Out of 58 decisional debates the squad won 34. The debaters entered 8 tournaments at the University, Brookings, Madison, Parker, Canton, Pipestone, and a divisional tourn- ament at Yankton. The Varsity team composed of Joy Golz, Eileen Lynch, and Bill Conaway debated at the Yankton Divisional tournament but were eliminated after two defeats. The members of the debate squad also participated in extemporaneous speaking, oratory, and discussion contests where they nude a very excellent showing. Tom Mead won a medal in oratory for superior rating at a tournament. Bill Conaway won a medal in extemporaneous speaking, placed second in that contest in the divisional meet, and placed first in a district tournament. Joy Golz made an outstanding showing in the discussion contest sponsored by the University when she placed third with a superior rating out of over 100 speakers entered in the.discussion contest. Joy also ranked first in several other discussion contests. Miss Phyllis Trione coached the squad. DECLAMATION Thirty students entered the declamation contest of Vermillion High School. The final contest was held in the high school auditoriun on November 6. The winners of each division and their selections were as follows: Poetry 'The Raven' Phyllis Searight Oratory 'The American Way of Life' Tom Mead Dramatic 'Illusion' Helen Armstrong Humorous 'The Awful Fate of Melpomenus Jones' Bill Ufford These students were then eligible to enter the district contest at Elk Point. Miss Trione assisted by Miss Westaby coached the students.

VERMILLIONAIRE Alice johnson, Melvin Erickson, jerry Harlow, Burdette Anderson, Margaret Conway Helen Lockwood, Patty Frankenfeld, Dorothy Dunlap, Phyllis Leikvold, Marilyn Cotton, Evelyn Jacobsen, Kathleen Brick, Adviser-Miss Westaby Betty Barton, Joy Golz, Bill Conaway, Merrie Lou Conaway, Bob Stark, Mary Margaret Sanger, Walter Scott, Marilyn Horner, Ann Helstrom This year was the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Vermillionaire, the High School paper. The Vermillionaire was started in the fall of 1917 and was then known as the Versodak, which comes from Vermillion, South Dakota. No records or files were kept of the first volunes, but they were issued every month at five cents a copy. The Vermillionaire was first printed in booklet form but in 1918 it was changed to the form we now have. The Vermillionaire staff for the first semester consisted of the following: Editor, Bob Stark: Assistant Editors, Marilyn Cotton and Mary Margaret Sanger: Editorials, Mary M. Sanger, Feature Editor, Dorothy Dunlap: Sports, Walter Scott and Bob Johnsong Photographers, Joe Trotzig and John Pardee: Business Manager, John Pardee: and adviser, Miss Carol Westaby. Reporters were Betty Barton, Helen Lockwood, Joy olz, Marilyn Horner, Shirley Benson, Shirley Strong, Ann Helstrom, Merrie Lou Conaway, and the journalism class. The set-up was changed during the second semester and Page Editors were assigned. They were Bob Stark, First Page Editor, Mary M. Sanger, Second Page Editor: Walter Scott, Third Page Editor, and Marilyn Horner, Fourth Page Editor. The reporters were then given their assignments from the page editors and each reporter had a parti- cular position to fill. Typists were Joy Golz, Phyllis Leikvold, Evelyn Christopherson, and Marilyn Cotton.
