FOOTBALL V Lee 0'Connor, Joe Dawson, John Armstrong, Vernon Lambert, Bill Bowie Bradley Simons, Burdette Anderson, Lowell Hanson, Burdette Benson Alden Bollne, Dick Edberg, Gordon Brown, Don Bacon, Donald Lindstrom VHS 6--Wagner 0 After losing every game of the previous season, the Tanagers started this season by chalking up a victory over Wagner 6-0. The Tanagers started out the season by using the tricky 'T' formation which is new to the club. VHS I9--Centerville 0 The Tanagers came through with two vic- tories in as many starts by thoroughly trouncing the Centerville boys 19-0. Bowie received two passes for 12 points and D. Brown made the remaining 7. This game proved that the Tanagers were going to be a strong club. VHS 0--South Sioux 0 Fighting for four quarters through about six inches of mud came to no good for the Tana- gera. The game ended in a deadlock 0-0. Although the game was played in South Sioux's territory most of the time the Tanagers didn't have the final push to make a counter. VHS 6--Leeds 7 The Leeds Lancers ruined an unbeaten record by defeating the Tanagers on Inman Field by the score of 7-6. Both were very evenly matched as the score shows. Both teams scored in the first half, but the attempted conversion failed, giving the game to Leeds. VHS 7--Hawarden I9 The Comets of Hawarden ruined Homecoming day for the Tanagers by defeating them by the SCG!! of 19-7. The Com ts counted twice before the Tanagers realized what had happened. The Tanagers counted in the last quarter but that was too late to make up the difference in the score. A fumble in the final few minutes proved fatal for another 7 points for Hawarden. VHS O--Yankton 20 Playing under the lights at Yankton the Tanagers were unable to stop the strong Bucks from Yankton and were defeated 20-0. Going against a team that was said to be one of the strongest in the state, the Tanagers had small chance of upsetting them. VHS 0--LeMars I8 Playing in a blinding snowstorm, the Tanagers were unable to match the LeMars Bull- dogs' power. The snow, a muddy field, and a wet football were fatal to the tricky 'T' forma- tion. VHS 6--Elk Point 6 Elk Point scored in the first quarter, but it didn't take long for the Tanagers to tie it all up. The last half the Tanagers were on the offensive continually but were unable to push the ball across.

CHEERLEADING SQUADS Jim Jorgensen, Barbara Brookman, Dorothy Dunlap, Dean Lee The cheerleading squad is composed of four members each semester. The cheerleaders are not allowed to serve two consecutive semesters and thus another squad is chosen for the second semester. The first semester's squad were Barbara Brookman, Dorothy Dunlap, Dean Lee, and Jim Jorgenson. The second semester's squad were Charlotte Kaltsulas Kathleen Brick, Art Ericson, and Dale Nelson. BASKETBALL Derald Brown, Burdette Benson, Vernon Lambert, Bill Bowie, Donavon Bacon Gordon Brown, Lowell Hansen, lalter Scott, Dale Firof, Warren Harris BASKETBALL l9WI-42 Starting out a 14 game schedule with only 5 lettermen returning was a hard task for Coach Nelson, but the Tanagers came through with 9 victories and 5 defeats dur- ing the season. In non-conference play the Tanagers were only able to defeat Beresford 30 to 20 They lost to a strong Yankton squad at the first of the season by the score of 27-20. Trinity, which proved to be one of the strongest clubs in Iowa, had a difficult time of defeating the Tanagers at their first meeting by beating them 37-25. In the last game of the regular season for the Tanagers, Trinity again easily won, trouncing V.H.S. 44 to 16. In tri-state competition the Tanagers came out very well, winning seven straight before being beaten in their last two conference games. They beat LeMars, Leeds, and Elk Point both times that the teams met but split with South Sioux and Hawarden. In both engagements with LeM rs and Leeds the Tanagers easily came through with victories. In the second game with Elk Point the Tanagers barely eked out a 21 to 20 victory. Beating both South Sioux and Hawarden in their first meeting, they were unable to defeat them again. In the game with South Sioux, which meant either winning the conference or tying for second, the Tanagers held a slight edge at the end of the first half, but were unable to hold the Cardinals who dropped in fifteen points while the Tanagers were getting five. The South Sioux Cardinals went on to win the Tri-State conference while the Tanagers finished in second place in a tie with Hawarden. In the first game of the District Tournament the Tanagers were matched against Centerville and easily subdued them by the score of 44 to 24. The following evening the Tanagers were matched against Wakonda who put up a much better fight than Centerville, but V.H.S. came through on the top end of the score by 35 to 25. In the semi-final game the Tanagers had an easy time with jefferson defeating them 31 to 17. In the big upset of the tourney Vermillion was defeated by Gayville. Gayville held a lead of 19 to 4 at halftime, and the game ended with Gayville the winner by the score of 23 to 21.
