After a four-year voyage of laughter, hard-work, and self- searching, we, the 76th company of Sailors to graduate from VHS are ready to stand in line for those important diplomas! 1965-66 has been'our year for leadership and responsibility, demonstrated in the Senior Privilege and Responsibility Program fbetter known as SPARCL We have worked hard this year to keep good grades in- tact for the mad scramble for various college acceptances and jobs. A successful candy sale boosted the treasury considerably, enabling the class as a whole to contribute 3100.00 to COED, a tri- county campaign to raise sufficient funds for an area college. All has not been work, however, merry-making included our Latin a Go-Go dance honoring Gloria Serman and Julie Sanchez, and a swinging Hard Times Dance featuring a Battle of the Bands. AISO. we hope that a precedent has been set this year with the Humanities Program, presented by members of the VHS faculty. Available to both interested seniors and faculty members, Human- ities was held on Wednesday nights and included lectures in art, history, music, and literature. Sessions were augmented with slides, recordings, and printed material about the subjects being discussed. Needless to say, we all had a great time on Senior Distinction Day, when members of the class not only took over for the faculty, but also visited city and county offices andjobs in which many of us were interested. Class Colors: Dark blue and Light blue. Class Motto: In ourselves our future lies. Class Adviser: Mrs. Sarah Welker l l 2 1 5 'A J' i -f- - ,,,.f!!+ 'R -4 51921 .A ll 1 we an 'ul .. W N. The team's over-all record Q7-12j is no indication of the type of basketball our team played, they displayed much enthusiasm in every game. The competitive element was evident throughout the entire season. The Sailors broke the school scoring record with 119 points against Wellington, the previous record was 107 points. Junior Ralph Mayer broke the in- dividual scoring record twice this year: first, with 37 points against Clearview and then 40 against Wellington. Another Junior, Roger Rice, tied the rebound record with 27 rebounds. Somebody better get that ball! Student Council In August, before most V.H.S.'ers had begun to think about the coming school year, the Stu- dent Council was meeting, under the leadership of President Judy Bassnett, who had returned with many ideas from a summer workshop, and Mr. Harold Welker, adviser. At the first meet- ing officers were chosen and A.F.S. Student Gloria Serman was made an honorary member. The Council's first projects were: assembling 1500 student handbooks, conducting Freshman Orientation and Slave Week, holding a Welcome- Back Assembly, and offeringa Leadership Work- shop for all school officers, at which the principal speakers were Mr. J. R. Armstrong of Vermilion's Speech Department and Mr. Dale Richmond, Executive Secretary of the Ohio As- sociation of Student Councils. The Council voted to join the Lakeland Conference Student Council and to buy pennants of all the schools in the Conference. The annual Christmas party for the faculty members and their families was given, and the Council supervised the sale of Christmas and Easter Seals. The year's final projects were organizing Senior Distinction Day, conducting elections, and planning the Awards Day Assembly. , ' 2 . The Vermilion High School Chapter of National Honor Society consists of juniors and seniors who have been selected by a faculty committee on the basis of character, scholarship, leader- ship, and service. At the October meeting the Juniors were installed as provisional members, and it was decided that there would be no Novem- ber meeting so that the members could attend the College Night held in Lorain. Instead of exchanging Christmas presents among themselves, the mem- bers voted to donate toys to the local toy drive. Executive Head Lawrence Zinn was the guest speaker at the January meetingg formal induction of the new members was held in February. For the third year, a scholarship was presented at the Awards Day Program to a deserving senior. The year ended with a picnic in May, when of- ficers for the coming year were selected. N.H.S. advisors are Miss Mary Chadwick and Mr. Stan- ley Plumly. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY EM? as-5 is L5 National Junior Honor Society . s I4 N Qi Ing0y5 E5' ,Q 9 o vgogo lst Row Cleft to rightbz C. F After their well-received fall presentation, if Good-Bye My Fancy, had been given, the D ' annual round of interscholastic speech 'J tournaments began. These included Ver- - mi1ion's own Invitational Speech, Debate, and Quiz Bee Meet, the All Lakeland Con- ference Speech and Debate Contest held in Vermilion, and the District and State Competitions-all which took place in Feb- ruary. The Speech Department also co- operated with the Assembly Committee and the Music Department to help produce the Thanksgiving, the Christmas, and other school assemblies. The classes' projects for spring included presenting three one- act plays for the Lakeland Conference Competition at Huron and giving their sec- ond major play, the spring play. A picture in the beginning of this book represents high school as the passing of time. But as other pictures show- high school is not merely the passing of time alone. It is my hope that through this volume, the past year will not be re- membered and forgotten as simply a marking of time. This has been a year of change, we had a new superintendent, many new teachers, and a shorter school dayg Vermilion voters passed an important bond issue. There are the memories of games, dances, studies, teachers, romances-happenings which were important, and not-so-important, but all of which we shall never forget as a part of our lives. I would like to thank those hard-working members of my staff for their determination in overcoming handicaps which at times seemed insurmountable. We worked for perfection, and did our best to produce something meaningful and lasting for our fellow students and VHS. Our many thanks to our faithful adviser, Mr. Smith, whose optimism, patience, un- derstanding, and humor kept us sane. It was a very good year. gg I : Linda Mae Clark Editor-in-Chief Custodians Ludlow Studio Senior Pictures The VHS Faculty Mr. Allen Schroeder The Photolournal Silhouette of an editor. MI..
