Nancy Prescott was the consumate English teacher, the parts of speech that make up the whole. She was the noun. As person, she was the friendly face, the mother” of V.U.H.S., the coach, the snowflake lady. She became the place” — the destination. Students didn't run to Mrs. Prescott's room; they ran to Mrs. Prescott. Nancy as thing was color; true blue in her loyalty to friends, colleagues, students and family; red in her fervor as a teacher, yellow with a sunny disposition that brightened our days. Nancy was a verb. As state of being, she represented constancy for her students. As action, she worked unceasingly to bring out the best in her pupils, her thespians, her gymnasts and herself. As an adjective enhances a noun, so Mrs. Prescott enhanced the lives of those around her. As the adverb, Nancy demanded that work be done very well; she greatly encouraged her students and she lovingly helped sixth graders become responsible junior high students. Direct objects receive their action directly from the verb. One only had to watch Nancy coach gymnastics or direct a play to understand how they work. Winning the State Trophy in Dramatics was the indirect object. Nancy was fond of saying that a preposition was anything a plane could do to a cloud. That definition was Nancy in life. She went above, around and through life with an extraordinary zest and capacity for love. We are left with simple punctuation. The exclamation — our shock and dismay at hearing the sad news! The question mark of Why?” The one unusable mark is the period — it denotes finality, a complete thought finished — Nancy's influence on us is not finished — for Nancy, a comma, and a dash — the links between the series, of past, present and future — because even though there has been a break — a shift of tenses from present to past, the link is there — we are better in our lives because of what she was in hers. - Ann Sullivan IN MEMORIUM
