“
ACTIVITIES SPORTS 1988 BLUE AND WHITE VERGENNES UNION HIGH SCHOOL VERGENNES, VERMONT DEDICATION MUSIC CLASS OF 1988 FACULTY UNDERCLASSMEN Beauty is truth, truth beauty,”- that is all Ye know on earth and earth and all ye need to know. - John Keats Ode on a Grecian Urn Using examples of creativity through the centuries, museums capture the history of the world. In a similar way Mr. Yarnall's classroom captures history at VUHS. The foundation of this is Mr. Yarnall's strong conviction that his students are capable of using their talents and intelligence to produce museum quality art work and also produce writing samples of equal excellence. By studying examples of excellence and personal achievement in people throughout the ages, Mr. Yarnall spurs his students on to reach toward high personal levels of achievement. Personal involvement does not end at the classroom door. He arranges field trips with colleagues teaching Humanities and Contemporary Man and World History classes. Together they widen the students' horizons and see the beauty of works of art and history in Boston and Montreal; thus they reach far and near to understand that Beauty is truth, truth is beauty- For this sincere desire to create a love of beauty in history we dedicate the 1988 Blue and White to Mr. Jon Yarnall. Nancy Prescott was the consumate English teacher, the parts of speech that make up the whole. She was the noun. As person, she was the friendly face, the mother” of V.U.H.S., the coach, the snowflake lady. She became the place” — the destination. Students didn't run to Mrs. Prescott's room; they ran to Mrs. Prescott. Nancy as thing was color; true blue in her loyalty to friends, colleagues, students and family; red in her fervor as a teacher, yellow with a sunny disposition that brightened our days. Nancy was a verb. As state of being, she represented constancy for her students. As action, she worked unceasingly to bring out the best in her pupils, her thespians, her gymnasts and herself. As an adjective enhances a noun, so Mrs. Prescott enhanced the lives of those around her. As the adverb, Nancy demanded that work be done very well; she greatly encouraged her students and she lovingly helped sixth graders become responsible junior high students. Direct objects receive their action directly from the verb. One only had to watch Nancy coach gymnastics or direct a play to understand how they work. Winning the State Trophy in Dramatics was the indirect object. Nancy was fond of saying that a preposition was anything a plane could do to a cloud. That definition was Nancy in life. She went above, around and through life with an extraordinary zest and capacity for love. We are left with simple punctuation. The exclamation — our shock and dismay at hearing the sad news! The question mark of Why?” The one unusable mark is the period — it denotes finality, a complete thought finished — Nancy's influence on us is not finished — for Nancy, a comma, and a dash — the links between the series, of past, present and future — because even though there has been a break — a shift of tenses from present to past, the link is there — we are better in our lives because of what she was in hers. - Ann Sullivan IN MEMORIUM Tonight's the night we'll make history, Honey, you and I, And I'll take any risk To tie back the hands of time And stay with you here tonight. . . . The best of times are When I'm alone with you; Some rain, some shine. We'll make this a world for two. Our memories of yesterday Will last a lifetime. We'll take the best, Forget the rest. And someday we'll find These are the best of times. -STYX PRESENTING THE CLASS OF 1988! Now I've had the time of my life. No, I never felt like this before. Yes, I swear it’s the truth and I owe it all to you ’Cause I’ve had the time of my life and I owe it all to you. I’ve been waiting for so long. Now I’ve finally found someone to stand by me. We saw the writing on the wall As we felt this magical fantasy. Now with passion in our eyes There’s no way we could disguise it secretly. So we take each other’s hand ’Cause we seem to understand the urgency Cause I've had the time of my life And I’ve searched through every open door Till I've found the truth And I owe it all to you. -Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes FUTURE’S SO BRIGHT What do you want to do with your life?” It is a common question asked of the Class of 1988, with varied responses. Becky Brace has decided to become a judge. (1) Watch out Pete, Clara, Rachel, and Eric! Jennifer Anderson will be representing us in Washington D.C. as Congresswoman Anderson with Chrissy Goff protecting her life. (2) IBM will someday be run by our own Angela Smith. (3) Raises for everyone! Missy Harter is studying computer programming to keep track of Brian Gebo's historical records. (4 5) Sharon Bergmans plans to be the first female Boston Celtic, while Pete Brands, Eric Jackson, and Kirk Daniels are conditioning themselves to be the next Larry Bird, Danny Ainge, and Kevin McHale respectively. (6 7) Janet Sleeper is still waiting for any idea of what to do for her career. (8) Anne Straw may be a movie star someday, so she practices now. (9) Jim Agan is working hard now to be the next National Skateboarding Champion. (10) Linda Dunn, like many of us, plans to go to college and decide on a career later. (11) Then there's Chris Goodyear, the next Christopher Brinkley. (12) Whatever the responses, there is one thing we all have in common: we, from Vergennes Union High School's Class of 1988, will lead our lives and businesses with promise and motivation. The future is bright for the Class of 1988! c p ■ 9 SPORTS TEAMS 1. Celtics 2. L.A. Lakers 3. Vergennes Commodores FAVORITE BANDS 1. 1)2 Def Leppard 2. AC DC FAVORITE SKI AREA 1. Mad River glen 2. My students tell me the only way I'll ever get to be a Vermonter is if my greatgrandfather gets reborn again in New Haven — and even then it'll be an 'iffy' situation. But they — the students, that is — have been more than willing to teach me about their state, about the people, about the color, about the beauty of the Green Mountain People. Bill Chalmers wrote this about his Vermont Studies class. Just one example of how we all learn together. .11 • J QN I M Hr ADMINISTRATION When the school year began on August 31, the school board was involved in a search for a new superintendent while Mrs. Patricia Zyber capably filled the position as acting superintendent. When the search ended and the chosen candidate declined the position, Mrs. Zyber consented to serve as the district's full time superintendent. School board members pictured at the right are (front) Pat Santenello of Pan-ton, Lucille Evarts of Waltham, Grace Mack of Vergennes; (back) Gail McE-voy of Ferrisburg, Barbara Fisher of Addison, Chairman Greg Clark of Vergennes, and Bernard Bouchard of Ferrisburg. CAUSE FOR CHANGE A cause for change? Yes! When Mr. Lanoue came to VUHS it was immediately apparent that something new and different would happen. A success oriented school was begun. Change cannot happen overnight, but it is easy to see that the students and faculty are functioning in a more positive atmosphere. Suspensions and detentions have been replaced by the planning room” where students find their own responsible solutions or plans” for better behavior. Mrs. Sullivan, the other half of the administrative team, put aside her duties as English teacher, to coordinate student activities. Now, a trip to the once dreaded office is a different experience where one is greeted with an understanding smile and even a piece of candy! A change indeed!! FRAU To teach American students the German culture, it is necessary to have experienced it. Who better at V.U.H.S. than Frau Minns? Her mind is filled with unusual occurrences which have caused her to be one of our more unique teachers. • How many times have you slammed the refrigerator door on the cat s head because you 'didn't know the cat’s head was in the door!’’? • What would you do if a strange foreign lady staged a sit in” in your office or bus? • Would you have paid Frau’s ransom when she was kidnapped in Germany? Good thing they released her. Those who have attended Frau Minns’ classes understand that her education goes beyond books. She extends more to her students more than just grammar. Mrs. MacCallum is known to some as Mother Theresa, to FBLA members as BUCKBO, and now to all as Teacher of the Year . Some students ask why. What makes a teacher Teacher of the Year ? Could it be her dedication to her students? Is it her support of this school? Yes, but ... it's that and much more. Mrs. MacCallum teaches accounting, shorthand, and office procedures. But the duties go much farther than just classes. She is the advisor of FBLA and was also its state supervisor for several years. Some students have had the interesting experience of seeing the after-school-side, the BUCKBO and BARBARIAN side. In twenty years, you will look back at the pictures in this yearbook and laugh. Those seventh graders looked so young! He was so chunky then- but WOW! look at him now! The eighth graders actually sat still long enough to have their pictures taken? amazing! I wonder if Michelle Brill would still fit in her locker? Is that Jeanette Karthaus with a mustache? It's interesting that our Indonesian friend Joice Panga-lila had better grades on English tests than most of the other sophomores. Lisa looked different this year. What's that? Again I find my classmates here are much freer to do what makes them happy. I believe I have grown up very quickly and I have learned it is important for me to make my own decisions. T.V. is not important and not very interesting for most Indonesian teenagers. Your T.V. here is a great temptation when there is homework to do. Beginning with parades in the fall, ending with parades in the spring- with concerts, auditions, rehearsals, band exchanges, and more concerts in between, our musicians had a busy year. The Junior High Band marched as a separate unit for the first time in the history of the school. You can raise money to travel with Close Up to Washington, D.C. to learn about our government. You can compete on state and national levels in business related skills as an FBLA member. You can travel to Belgium or Germany. You can help charitable organizations, or the library or plan alcohol and drug free activities. You can sharpen skills in parliamentary procedure and ag related jobs with FFA or you can join the yearbook staff and work hard all year long! The opportunities are there. Are you interested in participating? Our school system in Sweden is different from your school system. We can t choose special courses like you can. We’ve got lines with special courses, like for example my line which is called Social Knowledge has got these courses: Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Phys. Ed., Art or Music, Maths, History, German French Spanish Russian Italian etc., Swedish. English, Physiology. That is for my course which is three years long. Then we've got other lines like Economics which is specially for bank jobs etc. We also have a Nature course. Technical course. Humanities course, courses for mechanics, cooking, nursing and a lot more. We also have study halls like you, but we don't have to stay in school during the study hall, we can go home and then come back. Our schedule is not like yours. We've got a different schedule every day. So some mornings we can sleep or another day we can finish early. But it all depends on how the teachers put it. The school hasn't got any school teams with practices every day after school. This school we call Gymnasium is between two to four years long and you begin after you've gone to school for nine years and you're sixteen. That means that you graduate when you're either 18, 19, or 20. -Jonas Bjorkman When I first came to Vergennes I didn't know what to expect as my AFS experience. I knew what it could be like by talking to people who had gone in the past, but you really have to live your experience to know how wonderful it could be. My experience in Vergennes and in the U.S.A. has been really nice. Vergennes was totally unknown to me and I didn't know what kind of life I would find. I knew it was a small town but that was all. I’ve learned so many things during this time, not only from Vergennes but from the United States. I had other things in my mind about the U.S.A. and living here has been such a learning experience. I m glad I came to Vermont. I guess you get used to your life really fast. I also want to thank all the people in Vergennes who are giving me support all the time, I won t forget this year! Whether the problem is with friends, teachers, assignments . . . whatever, we are here to listen and help. And don’t worry, we won’t tell a soul. To help others enjoy life we must first master the skill. We get together and practice in small groups whenever possible. Find our what we can do for you, you’ll be pleasantly surprised!
