VERGENNES UNION HIGH SCHOOL VERGENNES, VERMOMT 1986 BLUE AND WHITE DEDICATION 2 SENIORS 12 ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY 40 JUNIORS 50 SOPHOMORES 56 FRESHMEN 62 EIGHTH GRADE 68 SEVENTH GRADE 74 MUSIC 80 ACTIVITIES 88 SPORTS 100 COMMUNITY SPORT 124 In each man there lies a spark of spirit, the vital bit of life PVLi'pvI that drives some to create and do, both for himself and I . I - ly, f I 1V__- I 1 for the people surrounding him. For 18 years, Mr. Rogers has helped students to achieve their personal best in English, Creative Writing, and Humantities, to name a few of his Classes. With him, students explore the fascinating world of Tol-kein, sail down the lazy Mississippi Rover with Huck and Jim in Twain's Huckleberry Finn, and enter the fantastical world of A Midsummer's Night's Dream. The world of books and authors come alive in his classroom, where we are inspired to find new thoughts and insights. Mr. Roger's spare time is spent in two of his favorite pursuits, hunting and fishing. The time spent in outdoor sports is a time for quiet contemplation, providing insight into the world around him. As chairman of the English Department, and as a teacher, he dedicates much of his time to the whimsical pursuits of the typical student. For this, Mr. Rogers, we would like to thank you. We also offer our thanks for your time, effort, and understanding that makes our ex perience at VGHS complete. For these, and many other reasons, we dedicate the 1986 edition of the Blue and White to Mr. Jay Rogers. The Senior Class Presents THE WINTER BALL 5 Linnus watches faithfully each year for the great pumpkin to appear on Halloween night, missing all the fun of Trick or Treat . VCIHS students didn't wait; we had our own fun with the Great Pumpkin Race, an obstacle course in which students and teachers carried pumpkins • What else? The winners of course, were the sophomores. The team consisted of Spence San-tenello, Eric Jennings, Carrie Howe, Chris Goodyear and Audrey Valz. SOPHOMORES WIN GREAT PUMPKIN RACE On Halloween Day VUHS was visited by all sorts of celebrities. We were greeted by Mickey Mouse, Huck Finn, Dracula’s wife, Alvin, Vana White, the Cone Heads, Ms. America, Bozo the Clown, Chicken Little, the Friendly Witch of the North and many more. Winners of the contest were Scariest-Tina Baker, Best homemade costume-Amy Shackett, and Funniest-Ken Goff. Music filled each corner of the gym as “8084 played into the night. Todd Flint, class president and host for the evening, made sure that everyone had a great time. Before long, the newly crowned King and Queen (Todd Flint and Jennifer Devos) were waltzing to the tune of “Still Loving You. They were soon joined by the court, which included Ladies Megan Prescott, Mary Lawry, Tracy Bones-teel, and Becky Stokes; and Gentlemen J.T. Mace, Paul Bicknell, Ed Charbonneau, and Steve Kayhart. MUD BOWL ’86 ... LYNK ESTATE The 2nd of October the day was overcast. As the fourth period bell rang a deafening, but familiar chant emitted from the Senior Section ‘ Road Trip!! We were off to the Lynk Estate. Screaming Seniors jumped from the bus and deployed around the estate in various games, (i.e. volleyball, basketball, swimming, and FOOTBALL.) What appeared to be a field of solid earth and grass suddenly transformed into a mass of mud and slithering bodies. After a grueling game of football, we all took a refreshing dip in the once crystal clear pool. Even the advisors took part in the festivities, however UNWILLINGLY. Thank you Mr. Lynk for the use of the Lynk Estate. 17 DARIN J. ALDINGER TINA ALLEN JOSEPH ASK D. Aldinger • DARWOOD”- We wanted Li Wing but we winged Willie Wong. Mrs. Thurber and Miss Bushey serve efficiently as secretaries in the superintendent’s office on Main Street. This year, Mrs. Thurber is retiring after 20 years as secretary to the superintendent. May she enjoy her retirement as a well deserved reward for a job well done. If you look in Webster’s New World Dictionary you will find the following: Soph • o • more (saf mor) (sophos, wise + moros, foolish) 1. A student in his second year of high school. soph • o • more ic- adj.-of or like sophomores, often thought of an overconfident, stubborn in holding to their opinions, etc. but immature. Immature? What do you mean, immature? Is hiding under English tables immature? Or yelling “Hosers will rule down the hall? What about “cut and paste day”? Paper wars certainly can't be considered immature! But, seriously, we have people of every extreme in the sophomore class. There are those who get straight A's, and those who don't. There are athletes and spectators, musicians and the audience. We have the socialites and the not-so socialites. There are those who never stop talking and those who never get a chance to start. So, we have devised our own definition of sophomores: Sophomores- tenth graders of any sex who will go out of their way to get out or work. Through this process they have developed their imaginations by finding excuses for everybody (teachers, parents, ect.) The class of 1988 is still working on the perfection of this definition, and with the members of this class, they are sure to succeed. 57 58 Matt Agan Jennifer Andrews Mary Anderson Melissa Anderson Robert Anderson Dave Aubin Ellen Barnes Sharon Bergamans Bradley Bertrand Henry Bissonette Moria Boehm Heidi Bolio Eric Bougor Tim Bourgeois Becky Brace Gene Bradford Peter Brands Missy Ann Brileya Missy Mae Brileya Steve Burt Robin Carr Clara Charlebois Kara Clark Corey Collette Andy Comeau Lynn Correia Penny Coyle Jay Curtis Paul Cyr Kirk Daniels Kurt DeGraaf Ellie Demers Doug Dow Linda Dunn Maria Dykema Steve Entrott Lynn Fuller Rachel Ganson Martha Gardner Brian Gebo Chrissy Goff Chris Goodyear Mineke Gordon Michael Grace Shelly Hayes Kelly Heath Connie Hoague James Hopkins Bobbi Jo Houle Carrie Howe Bobbie Hutchins Eric Jackson Stephanie Jacob Eric Jennings Cindy LaBerge Brian LaFleche Adam Larrow Erin Lussier Amy McBride Sue McDonald Kelly McEvoy Nancy Meader Jeff Mitchell Brian Moulton Karen Muzzy Nikki Nimblett 59 Heather Norton Dee Northrop Cathy O'Daniel Lucien Pickett Troy Pudvah Brent Perkins Gene Pouliot Shawn Richards Lisa Rose CLASS OFFICERS-Pres. Starting early this year, the VCIHS band was invited to participate in Vermont Day at the Eastern States Exposition in September. Soon after. Bells are Ringing went into production with hours spent preparing for this professionally done musical in November. All who were a part of it deserve congratulations for a job well done. By then, practice had begun for the Christmas Concerts presented by the bands and choruses. Everyone who attended enjoyed two evenings of fine music. Junior High couldn't go unnoticed. They bus ied themselves preparing for the Kiddie Concert on tour to local grade schools. Interspersed between the musical and concerts, students, both junior and senior high, auditioned for district, all state, and all New England bands and choruses. With the beginning of the basketball season the Pep Band began its work promoting the Commodore Spirit and excitement of each home basketball game. Jazz band, through hard work and early morning rehearsals, has had a fine year. Winter has arrived and plans for Pops Concert and Talent Night were begun. In February these again made demands on the department, but again, excellent performances were enjoyed by all. With the coming of spring came more preparation and productions. The Spring Concerts for both bands and choruses showed once again the fine quality of the department. The Music Banquet brought recogni tion to all of those who faithfully participated in the year's activities. Mrs. Williams and Miss Philputt deserve the entire school's gratitude for their time, energy. and talent. Finally we reached the end of the year and gradu ation was upon us. The band entertained parents and friends of the graduates as they awaited the commencement exercises. A busy year, yes — but what a rewarding one! Many students were chosen as part of the district, all state, or all New England groups. Best of all. Miss Philputt was chosen teacher of the year from this district honored at (JVM. She was a young excited senior, to put it bluntly, a Yessie”. She was quite a student leader, in fact, her teachers used to say that she could be a president someday. She knew how important it was to be involved, to make a contribution to the school. Her mother told me secretly that Cornelia was over-extended. Cornelia attended Drama on Monday, and ran home to do her homework. On Tuesday she went to ACES and after the school day she worked at the local supermarket. She came to school early on Wednesday to make up the school work she missed on Tuesday. After school on Wednesday she worked on the school Yearbook, and at 7 in the evening she was a volunteer on the rescue squad. Thursday was AFS, and Friday she went to the FHA meetings. Cornelia is a “Yuppie today; her life is filled with executive board meetings, and volunteer work at the local hospital. High School prepared Cornelia for life. Are You A Yessie”??!!?? 4 89 STUDENT COUNCIL When students and teachers returned to school in September, they realized that Miss Brown and the Student Council had already begun what has proved to be a very active year. The first of many clever bulletin boards greeted us. This year Student Council sponsored a dance, the first Great Pumpkin Race, the return of Winter Festival, and an Air Band-Lip Sync Contest. They also selected five teachers to be recognized at the honors assembly in February. This active group includes the following members: Row 1-Miss Brown, B. Brace, D. Aldinger, M. Prescott, M. Some have chosen to make a nine week commitment, while others have decided on a one-day “shadowing” experience. A.C.E.S. is open to all high school students who are willing to put in a little extra effort. It offers students a chance to try their talents, explore their interests or contribute their time to the community. It gives students a basis for deciding what they want to do after high school. Since Vergennes Union High School is one of the few high schools in the state that offers an opportunity like this, students should really try to take advantage of it. LIBRARY AIDS Students that work in the library find themselves involved in many projects and tasks. Generally they are busy assisting students as they check out. and return books. They are also responsible for processing all the magazines and newspapers. Library aides assist with creating displays, working on the vertical file, and processing new books. Without their assistance the library would be in a state of chaos. The helpers are • (in the front row) Miss Brown. Joell Francis. Sonia Lustig: back row Sarah Sessions. Betsey Sessions. Pictured above are Pat Porter, Jim McBride, and Gene Pouliot who earned their trip to Kansas City by winning the Milk Quality Competition and then placed second in the state competition in land judging. Pat won a Gold Emblem for being in the top quarter of the state competition. Steve Kayhart, Pat Porter, Gene Pouliot, and Jim McBride competed in the Farm Business Management Competition at the Barre Farm Show last January. Tammy Knudson won the Creed Speaking Contest on the district level. A small group, but they make themselves known. Officers this year are Pres. Steve Kayhart, V.P. Jim McBride, Second V.P. Tony Besette, Secretary Jim Ouellette, Treasurer Gene Puoliot, Reporter Pat Porter, and Sentinal Ray Dykema. 99 WHY PARTICIPATE? When students who participate in sports were asked this question, the following were their replies. To improve my physical prowess. To participate in a sport I enjoy. It’s fun. The competition is great. It's exhilarating. We like to win. I want to. I like it. I like the challenge of putting up with freshman. I want to get out of barn chores. It’s mentally satisfying. I like the rush of adrenalin. It’s challenging. For my health. It keeps me in good shape. It keeps me out of trouble. Some day I may be famous.
