It actually included the same students that attended Vergennes High School; however, now each of the five member towns was represented on the school board. A new building with modern laboratories, language rooms, cafeteria, library, auditorium, shops, etc. replaced the historic three story building which had served the communities faithfully for many, many decades. The new facility allowed much more diversification to help prepare the many interests, talents, ancl capabilities of its students for their continued educational experiences or their endeavors during their adult lives. It was much more easily adapted to meet the ever-changing challenges of American society. MERLE CROWN — Principal 1959-1967 Three graduates of the class of I960. the first class to graduate from V .V .11 S., have children graduating in the class of 1964. They are Joan Parks Barr, Cathy Senesac Douglas, and Ann Wisell Sullivan. Their Children are Bruce Barr (lop). Michelle Douglas (middle), and Sean Sullivan Ibottom). Proud traditions have continued through these, as well as hundreds of other families wlw have passed through V.U.ll.S. ■Ma lSKKl S UK All lOY.Tft ISttMWK. IIKUMt.u. Since then young people of our district have entered our school seeking the new challenge and the new opportunity waiting within. The construction of the school was an immense endeavor undertaken with the betterment of our children and, thereby, our communities as the major objective. The sacrifice made to assure that this school became a reality was great. As Americans, we recognize that sacrifice is often necessary in order to enjoy the benefits of living in a democracy including our freedom and our education. Rearing in mind that ed- ucation is freedom for it liberates us from the bondage of ignorance, these selfless efforts of our citizens, past and present, on behalf of our youth have been generous and profound. On our silver anniversary year, 1 wish to express my appreciation to everyone in our communities who has advanced the cause of education, whether as a taxpayer, a parent, a school person, or simply a caring individual. We continue to have pride in our purpose and look forward to the promise of the future. — CHARLES H. USHER — Principal 1980-1984 GOOD THINGS COME IN SMALL PACKAGES The class of 1984 has spent many years here at V.U.H .S. and our lives have been touched by many individuals. Through the help and guidance of each, we have grown and learned . It is to one of these special people we dedicate our yearbook. Miss Susan Philputt has spent the past 5 years here at V.U.H .S. putting in countless hours to make our music department bigger and better. When Miss Philputt arrived at V.U.H S. she had a combined Jr. 6 Sr. High band of 42 students. Now only 5 years later Miss Philputt has a combined band of about 120 students. Miss Philputt also gives countless hours to extra activities such as musicals, jazz band, pep band, and numerous other activities. We owe her much and this is but a small token of our gratitude. For the remaineder of us, all we can say is, “We Thank You 5 7 11 MY NAME IS NOT RED! Don’t ask me about my temper! Red and pink clash with my hair. Yes, I burn and peel all summer. Don’t count my freckles! I blush sooo easily. Just a few comments made by redheads. Some love their red hair, others wish it were anything but red. But to anyone else — red is terrific! 13 PUTTIN’ ON THE RITZ If you're blue and you don’t know where to go, why don’t you go where fashion fits .. . Dressed up like a million dollar trooper, trying hard to look like Gary Cooper .. . High hats and arrow collars, white spats, and lots of dollars . .. Spending every dime for a wonderful time ... Puttin’ on the Ritz.’’ 14 WHAT DO JOBS TEACH? Did you ever stop to ask yourself what you learn from that job that takes up most of your out-of-school time? lj;t's think about it for a while. You learn to budget both time and money. You have to set your priorities and go from there. Money is too hard to come by, so you learn to spend it wisely. Well, some learn faster than others. You learn to be a more responsible person; one who can be depended on to get a job done and done well. You gain self-confidence — you're on your own in the working world — not a little child any longer. Just think of all you have learned! 15 Co-editors — Sandy McNary and Wayne Hobbs Business Editors — Brad Clark and Kathy Kirby Advisor — Mrs. FAma Grant A great deal of time and work goes into the production of a yearbook. No one really understands just hoiv much work until they join the staff. It takes dedicated and responsible students who devote their free time to produce such a hook. As their advisor, I'd like to express my appreciation to everyone who helped in even the smallest way. THE STAFF — front — T. Bonesteele, B. Brunet, E. Brady, T. Heustis, J. Curtis, J. Pidgeon, M. Over the years they have excelled, state and nationwide, inform mechanics, farm management, show manship, and land judging competitions. Kansas City isn’t the only place they’ve travelled to. With Harmon’s influence and direction, he has coached teams which have competed at the Barre Farm Show, Eastern States Expo., and his land judging team traveled to Oklahoma City last fall. His memory is still living inside of us all. It’s impossible to justify such a tragedy, so perhaps the best thing to do is to keep this memory alive and occasionally look back to the times we spent with our friend. 44 SANDRA L. To students it is a pictorial diary of memories of the past school year. To the staff members that contribute their time and effort, it is a very demanding job that has to be done. To the editors of the book, it is an enormous project that detnands time and attention, sometimes for longer periods of time than we care to contribute. Many hours of time and effort were put into this book that are never visible to its readers. It is up to you, the reader to decide if we, the staff of the Blue b White, have been successful in producing a book that is worthwhile. We have survived the long hours of work and the never ending headaches of all this to come to that nerve racking day in late February when the book is sent to the publishers. Though there have been disputes of the division of power in the Editors chair, we were able to put that all aside and were able to agree at least 90% of the time; the other 10% either one of us did anyway despite the other’s decision. And now we proudly present this years yearbook to you, the students, faculty and administration of VUHS. We sincerely appreciate your contribution to this book, and hope that these pages of the Blue b White will always be a part of your memories spent here at Vergennes — as they are to us. The Vergennes FFA started off the school year by reaping the benefits of hard work from the past school year by representing Vermont FFA in regional and national contests. Eight members travelled to the Eastern States Exposition in Springfield, Mass. In October, Sean Sullivan, Brian Sipley, Bill Claflin, and Steve Kayhart placed first in the state land judging contest, winning a S500 award to be used toward their trip to Oklahoma City this spring. In November we flew to Kansas City to the National FFA Convention where our members met many other members from around the country. Some as far away as Washington State and California were very special to some of our members. (It is common knowledge that there is still correspondence going on between Vermont and Washington State.) In Kansas City, Brian Sipley won a silver award in farm business management, and Bill Claflin won a bronze. In showmanship, Steve Kayhart won a gold award, Jeff Coreia won a silver and Steve Ouellette, a bronze in the farm mechanics contest. Vergennes was recognized nationally as a superior capter. You turn around and it’s gone forever ...” The year will be over, but the memories will never go. 1 still remember my first day coming from a bus from New York City to Burlington where my host-mother and my three host-sisters already waited for me. They were as excited and as nervous as I have been ... During the year we have had misunderstandings, but through efforts from both sides we had a great time and we learned a lot from each other. I want to thank my host parents. Boh and Rita Smith, also my host-sisters, Veronica, Jennifer and Audrey Valz, and the rest of the family to share a year with a foreign exchange student and be their second family. It is a big responsibility and theu did a wonderful job. I also want to thank all the students and the guidance department at VUHS for bringing the life and spirit of an American High School so close. c. Silvia A.F.S. Members are: FRONT — Rusty Run. I enjoy living in the USA, but it’s difficult at times because I miss my family in Panama. My host family, the Bertrands, have been very good to me and I have enjoyed learning about life in the U.S. by living with this family. I’ve learned more in this one year about the USA than I ever could have learned in the same amount of time at home. One day I hope that some of the students at VUHS will become an AFS exchange student and have as great an experience as I have had. — Quique LEO CLUB The Leo Club, a junior division of the Lions Club is a philanthropic organization raising funds for scholarships and other causes. The community reponse to the ACES students is very positive and a good relationship develops among the community sponsor, the student and the high school A peer-tutoring program was begun this year where students help other students with their subjects during their free periods. Also a Community Friends program was developed to pair elementary school students with high school Big Brothers and Big Sisters.
