Diagram that sentence! What animal would you associate with Tom Sawyer? Did you finish your family tree? How about your autobiography? Your next composition is due on Thursday. Tryouts for the musical begin on Monday. Learn your lines! Dress rehearsal is only two days away; 1 think we'll make it! Do any of these sound familiar? They should. We've all heard them. As seventh graders she mothered us as we struggled to establish ourselves as a part of V.U.H.S. In the years that followed, we knew that her door was always open when we needed someone to talk to. She has spent countless hours directing musicals, one acts, and spring productions, helping us to do what, at first, seemed impossible. Our love, our respect, and the dedication of our 1983 Blue and White are yours, Mrs. Prescott, to show our appreciation for all you have done. 3 YEARBOOK STAFF Reclining: Overworked Co-Editors T. The human leg comes in a never ending variety of shapes and sizes. Thin, pudgy, tall, short, knobby, smooth or whatever — the leg is an example of nature at its worst. What do you use legs for besides standing and walking? Not much. So what do you do? You cover them up, of course. We cover our legs with socks in endless different types. Argyles, Nikes, Adidas, and even Army socks, jeans and cords also serve the important purpose of leg coverings. They are a vital part of everyone's wardrobe. Legwarmers are a new addition to the growing number of leg coverings in all of their baggy and warm glory. But there are always those who let nature cover their supporting limbs” with a mass of curls. Maybe not beautiful, but certainly comfortable. Perhaps the dictionary should have a new definition of legs — one of the limbs of the human body used to carry jeans, Levis, Nikes, Adidas, Pumas, Jordache labels, cords, dresses, leg-warmers ...........” 6 7 They stand quietly alone in the hall throughout every day, patiently awaiting each bell between periods. They hold books, coats, boots, shoes, lunches, posters, memoboards, bumperstickers, and anything else their occupant cares to entrust them with. Then, at the sound of the bell, the hallways become roaring tunnels as classrooms empty and the student body of VUHS races for their lockers. The metal doors swing open and bang against each other. Books and possessions are pulled out and thrown in and the door is slammed as Seniors, Juniors, Sophomores, Freshmen, and members of the 8th and 7 th grade race back to classes — leaving the occasional straggler behind who helplessly bangs on a jammed lock or door. As the next bell rings the lockers are, once again, left to themselves as they wait quietly for the next outburst. Lli WAITING FOR THE OUTBURST SOME HAVE IT — SOME DON’T Amid turmoil and controversy our administration and school board have led us through a trying year. Late night meetings and many long hours have been given by these people attempting to make decisions concerning the running of the school, while constantly being sidetracked by other disturbing issues, such as settling the “Ring Thing, entanglements with legal matters and presenting a budget to the taxpayers. For all of this we are grateful. F A Getting something by Mr. Bowen may not be the easiest thing in the school but we figured we'd give it a try. When our photographer came by a hapless student entrapped in a trash can, we thought we’d go for it. But then Mr. Bowen appeared on the scene and cleared the hall, leaving the poor kid stuck there. To the staff that produces the book it is a difficult task that must be done; and to the Editors of the yearbook it is a never ending headache that steals free-time and demands attention. Hours of time and effort that have been poured into the yearbook are never visible to the reader, he or she looks to the book for old memories — good and bad. If we, the Editors of the 1982-83 Blue and White”, have achieved that goal then we have been successful. It is up to you, the reader, to decide. The school year at the Yearbook Staff was perhaps one of the most difficult. Through all the contract disputes that were kept quiet, the arguments, and the monotonous work we have continued and the book was published. At last. From the Senior Hike to Senior Superlatives to junior High Sports, Tom’s camera was present — though not always appreciated; and Bret, being a little too persistent, pursuing Senior quotes and other things for the yearbook that members of all classes were so good at forgetting. Through all the disputes on the division of power in the Editor's chair we managed to survive, to agree at least 80% of the time. The other 20% we either left out or did behind the other's back. We now present this book to you, the students of VUHS, with our thanks in being allowed to produce it and photograph you in so many aspects and poses. Too many to be included in this book. We hope that these pages of the 1982-83 “Blue and White will mean something special to you about your years here at Vergennes, and through the future — as they do to us. Bret E. Griswold, Thomas . This morning, He's going to walk down the front steps, wave his hand, and start out on the great adventure . .. It’s an adventure that might take him across continents, across oceans, ... It’s an adventure that will probably include wars and tragedy and sorrow ... To live his life in the world he will have to live in will require faith love and courage. So World, I wish you would sort of look after him ... Take him by the hand and teach him the things he will have to know. 45 48 0 R S 49 WE LOVE DIRTY LAUNDRY Remember the survey we took at our class meeting? And nothing tested their ability to stay together more than the class ring fiasco. Sophomores were delayed from buying their class rings this year due to charges raised against the company producing the rings. Sales were halted while the charges were investigated locally — an investigation that eventually went so far as to involve the federal government. The charges were eventually dismissed; but through it all the Sophomore class stuck together. 54 SOPHOMORE S 55 Wayne Abare Elroy Aunchman Ann Ayers Melinda Bahre Linda Bajema Kim Barrows Missy Barrows Kelly Beach Kim Beirholm Missy Bertrand Peter Bicknell Charlene Billing Luke Birchmore Ann Bolduc Marc Bougor Megan Brook Laurie Brunet Rusty Burt Eric Campbell Bruce Carney Tina Cassidy Amy Childers Bart Cobb Danny Collette Jeff Correia Leigh Cunningham Noreen Cushing joanie Dam Mike Danyow Lester Delisle Scott Delorme Tracy Dike Jerry Douville Ray Durfee Ann Ellinger Lisa Emerson 56 Sheila Emerson Mike Entrot Morgan Evarts Tom Fairbrother Martha Fisher Tim Flynn Sarah Ganson Cheryl Gebo Susan Goddette Heidi Griswold Shelly Harrington Laurie Jerger Kathy Kirby Joe LaBerce Sharon Lafleche Pattie Lamphear Chuck LaPlant Rob Leach Michael Lustlg Chris Marshall Greg McEvllla Jeff McGrath Harry Mills Pat Morrison Shawn O’Conner David Ouellette Steve Ouellette Jeff Parkinson Tammy Patterson Nancy Perkins Gordon Pickett Andy Raymond Shannon Reedy Brian Remilard Lori Robertson Terry Romeo 57 Cindy Rose Whitney Russett Alaina Salgado Joy Shields Heather Stavenow Carrie Steady Randy Sterns Penny Stone Michelle Sullivan Wendy Summer Claude Tackett Paul Tarte Tammy Tucker Liz Turpin Jean Vandeweert Julie Vanier David Visser Tim Werling Robin White Missy Wright Priscilla Wright Randy Zalubski 58 59 Freshman Day and the Freshman Resistance were the headliners for the freshman class this year. In their first year as members of the high school the freshman class made its mark. Postponment, almost cancellation, and a final rescheduling of Freshman Day didn’t stop them. They fought for their place in the traditions of the school. And when the rescheduled day finally took place the freshmen proved themselves to be worthy of the high school as they took all that was dished out. They start their day by trying to calm the millions of butterflies in their stomach as they wait for the bus to arrive. They can't be sure whether to be proud and look forward to the day or they may even want to die on the spot. By the time they enter the boundries of Vergennes most of the butterflies are gone, and they feel that maybe they could live through the day. The day proves to go along very well, with a few miscalculations in where they are supposed to be and when, but that is handled by friendly teachers and upper classmen. These newly inducted members of VUHS leave the building with a few homework assignments, new friends, and a lot of great ideas that will materialize in the weeks to follow. It is usually an enjoyable and well lived day. 72 Matt Agan Mary Anderson Missy Anderson Jennifer Anderson Robert Anderson Bill Baker Adam Barber Ellen Barnes Bradley Bertrand Henry Bissonette David Blake Heidi Bolio Eric Bougor Tim Bourgeois Becky Brace Missy Anne Brileya Missy Mae Brileya Steve Burt Robin Carr Clara Charlebois Kara Clark Corey Collette Andy Comeau Lynn Correia Penny Coyle Mark Curler Jay Curtis George Cushing Kirk Daniels Kurt DeGraaf Ellie Demers William Devine Michael Douglas 74 Douglas Dow Stephen Entrott Martha Gardner Rachel Ganson Brian Gebo Christine Goff Laurie Goldberg Mlneke Gordon Michael Grace Stephanie Griffis Melissa Harter Shelley Hayes Connie Hoague )ames Hopkins Bobbie Jo Houle Carrie Howe Bobbi Lee Hutchins Eric Jennings Melissa Jimmo Wayne Johnson Brian LaFleche Adam Larrow Niles Loyer Erin Lussier Monty Many Amy McBride Kelly McEvoy Geoffrey McLam Nancy Meader Dale Miller Jeffrey Mitchell Brian Moulton Karen Moulton 75 Nicole Nimblett Dorothy Northrup Heather Norton Kathy O’Daniel Bob Orrell Hawkeye Parker Brent Perkins Lucien Pickett Eugene Pouiiot Shawn Richards Nathan Roberts Nicky Roberts Gary Rose Lisa Rose Lindy Russett Claudia Ryder Spencer Santenello Carl Senecal Janet Sleeper Angela Smith Samantha Sullivan John Stokes Anne Straw Michele Thompson David Torrey Heather Truman Audrey Valz Shawn Vanier Dorothy Vincent Ronda Walker Darin Weeks Iris Whitney John Wild Cathy Williams 76 Seventh Grade Officers (below) — Rachel Ganson, Secretary; Janet Sleeper. And what’s more exciting than a band marching in that parade with spanking new uniforms? Under the direction of Miss Susan Philputt the VUHS Band has grown in the past few years to include 124 musicians. Their sound is terrific, so why shouldn't they look the same? New uniforms were needed. A fund raising campaign was organized by Miss Philputt and ‘‘The Friends Of Music.” Area Merchants, organizations and parents all contributed generously to provide the flashy new uniforms in time for the spring parade season. The premiere performance, in the new uniforms, was at the Music Festival Parade in Rutland. They went on to march in the Vergennes Memorial Day Parade and placed second in the VT-NH Soccer cup parade in Middlebury. Next came the American Legion Parade in St. Albans and finally the Bennington Battle Day Parade. Yes, the proud director took her band to her old home town where they proudly displayed their talents in new uniforms. Last year they were commended as the “most improved” band in the state. 93 JUNIOR HIGH CHORUS Front — H. Trueman. D. Carpenter. M. Karthaus. A. Chamberlain, B. Hutchins. H. Bolio, L. Delorme. T.
