Text from Pages 1 - 136 of the 1980 volume:

Now as I was young and easy under the apple boughs About the lilting house and happy as the grass was green, The night above the dingle starry. Time let me hail and climb Golden in the heydays of his eyes, And honoured among wagons I was prince of the apple towns And once below a time 1 lordly had the trees and leaves Trail with daisies and barley Down the rivers of the windfall light. And as I was green and carefree, famous among the barns About the happy yard and singing as the farm was home, In the sun that is young once only, Time let me play and be Golden in the mercy of his means, And green and golden I was huntsman and herdsman, the calves Sang to my horn, the foxes on the hills barked clear and cold. And the sabbath rang slowly In the pebbles of the holy streams. All the sun long it was running, it was lovely, the hay-Fields high as the house, the tunes from the chimneys, it was air And playing, lovely and watery And fire green as grass. And nightly under the simple stars As I rode to sleep the owls were bearing the farm away, All the moon long I heard, blessed among stables, the night-jars Flying with the ricks, and the horses Flashing into the dark. And then to awake, and the farm, like a wanderer white With the dew, come back, the cock on his shoulder: it was all Shining, it was Adam and maiden, The sky gathered again And the sun grew round that very day. So it must have been after the birth of the simple light In the first, spinning place, the spellbound horses walking warm Out of the whinnying green stable On to fields of praise. And honoured among foxes and pheasants by the gay house Under the new-made clouds and happy as the heart was long In the sun born over and over, I ran my heedless ways, My wishes raced through the house-high hay And nothing I cared, at my sky blue trades, that time allows In all his tuneful turning so few and such morning songs Before the children green and golden Follow him out of grace. Nothing I cared, in the lamb white days, that time would take me Up to the swallow-thronged loft by the shadow of my hand, In the moon that is always rising, Nor that riding to sleep I should hear him fly with the high fields And wake to the farm forever fled from the childless land. Oh as I was young and easy in the mercy of his means, Time held me green and dying Though I sang in my chains like the sea. OUR DEDICATION: A SYMBOL OF THANKS! 2 Ed Krasnow has been here five years and has improved many aspects of learning at Vergennes Union High School. Through his efforts, the school has had a newspaper of which to be proud. He’s worked on many activities and exchanges with AFS. Usually known as “Kraz,” this teacher of English and Journalism is one of the most helpful, understanding people in our school. It is because of his caring that we dedicate this yearbook to him. The Vergennes High School Board has really supported many activities in the school year. The members are listed as follows: Lawrence Gebo, Chairman; Nancy O’Bryan, Vice Chairman; Anna Husk, clerk; Lynn Jackson; Joel Fitzpatrick: Patricia Emerson; and Susan Heath. Because of their generous support to us the Yearbook Staff, we also dedicate this yearbook to them. 3 TABLE OF SENIORS ...........6 FALL SPORTS ......37 JUNIORS ..........49 WINTER SPORTS .55 SOPHOMORES 68 CONTENTS FRESHMEN .........76 EIGHTH GRADE 84 SEVENTH GRADE . 92 ADMINISTRATION . 104 FACULTY 106 S£TU 0 tS ‘uream on Good-bye stranger It’s been nice. Near the end of the season T. Angier and goal keeper T. Bicknell were also critically injured. Rather than submit to these adversities the team responded with a fine 5-6-3 record. Several school records were equaled or exceeded by Tom Brigan who tied the mark for career points with 23, and Tim Bicknell set two records; career appearances as a goalkeeper-20. Although player injuries and the needs of the Varsity occasionally disrupted their rhythm, they showed a stubborn refusal to give up. Their shining hour was a 3-0 victory over Middlebury which avenged a previous 3-2 defeat. John Bodette, center halfback, Dana Ambrose, Striker and Steve Rooney, goalie, where stalwarts throughout the 6-8 season. The junior high Boys Soccer team have shown a lot of enthusiasm in this years season. They worked hard and had great spirit until the end. They are looking forward to next season, some still on junior high and ones that will move up to Junior Varsity. With new players coming up for next years season everyone is looking forward to another great season. A great deal of sportsmanship and school spirit was shown on the players parts and we are hoping that next year it will be a great season. JR. HIGH GETS GOIN Front: B. Carney, B. Barr, S. Delorme, T. Girls Soccer This was the first year for the Vergennes Girls Soccer Team, coached by Mr. Guyette. In spite of the 2-8-1 record, we felt the team had great enthusiasm. The skill portrayed by the team was very well developed for the first years effort. There was a variety of participants, some from each class. The first goal scored in the Vergennes girls soccer history was made by Claudia Fagan. But the rest of the team scored soon after. The high scorers for this year were Shelly Schroeder with 3 goals and Heidi Haigis with 3 for 3 penalty kicks. With goals scored by other team members they did really well against tough competition. 41 Left: Coach Guyette late as he usually is for practice!. JR. Evidences of the girls’ enthusiasm and good sportsmanship was proven by the many compliments paid to the girls by the Field Hockey Officials during the season. DURING THEIR FINAL SEASON! For the second year in a row Sandy Rooney repeated as high scorer with nine goals. Carol Fagan followed a close second with eight goals. The majority of the girls have played Field Hockey since Jr. High and are sad to see the great sport come to an end. Front: Coach Doughty, P. Couch. Middle: J. Curler, J. Couch, G. Fisk. Back: T. Sheilds, D. Straw The Vergennes Cross Country season is probably best looked back upon as a season of individual performances. Not many meets were won, yet it was a successfull season for all. The team was boosted of seniors running for the first time, seasoned runners whose dedication may put them into top state competition next year, and freshmen who developed a desire for personal bests. Most of the team is young and with summer training, strong desires, and good luck, they should be a team that wins not only meets in the future but championships. CROSS COUNTRY RUNS STRONG Linda Kayhart, Patti Casey, Ann Bicknell, Debbie Harris, and not shown Kelli Stavenow. The Vergennes Girl’s Cross-Country team finished the season lacking in numbers but not in talent and spirit. The team is all underclassmen, yet, kept pace with many older teams. The cooperative spirit and commitment to running can only improve the team in coming years. The cross-country team scores as a group, but the individuals are the success. 4b The Junior High Cross country team consisted of a group of dedicated girls and boys. The young athletes displayed honorable skill and they show great promise in their future running years. The Junior High team was strong and has many excellent runners who will be key members when they are in Senior High. The Junior High X-Country team consisted of boys: J. McGrath, R. Wagner, J. Synge. The play is about a young man’s rise and fall as a hero. The play is centered in 19th century Ireland and captures the spirit and humor of its people. 127 That time of year thou mayst in me behold When yellow leaves, or none, or few, do hang Upon those boughs which shake against the cold, Bare (ruin’d) choirs where late the sweet birds sang. In me thou see’st the twilight of such day As after sunset fadeth in the west, Which by and by black night doth take away, Death’s second self, that seals up all in rest. In me thou see’st the glowing of such fire That on the ashes of his youth doth lie, As the death-bed whereon it must expire, Consum’d with that which it was nourished by. This thou perceiv’st, which makes thy love more strong, To love that well which thou must leave ere long. William Shakespeare ■Lit' 1 . , - s-5 d| Wt .
