NORTON, WE DEDICATE OUR YEARBOOK TO YOU AND WISH YOU THE BEST IN WHATEVER YOU DO. — JOAN MARSH 2 TEACHER AND FRIEND The class of '79 has spent many years here at V.U.H.S. and our lives have been touched by many individuals. Through the help and guidance of each, we have grown and learned. It is to one of these special people we dedicate our yearbook. Mrs. Ellen Norton spent many years here at V.U.H.S. and has instructed many of us. Her friendship, caring, and support of the school has touched us all. Mr. and Mrs. Norton are present at countless activities from 15 cents a-dip dinners to sporting events, to plays, concerts, and meetings. Her firm belief in us and in our school has helped us in countless ways. We owe her much and this is but a small token of our gratitude. For the remainder of all we can say is, 1 'Merci Beaucoup.1' Madame at home on Water Street. V.U.H.S. FACULTY MEMORIES Remember these days! Students and buildings aren't the only things that change. Our lovable V.U.H.S. faculty has changed with us. They are a very special part of our personal memories and our 1979 Blue and White 1 'memories''. We salute our faculty and want to voice our thanks. We owe them much respect and appreciation for their consistent dedication. 6 THE HEART OF V.U.H.S Mr. Charles Memoe, Principal Assistant Principal, Mr. Charles Usher Many important things happen in our central office that affect us all. People rush in and out, phones ring, and machines run, yet everyone has his own special job to help keep us rolling! From French dinners, to excursions to Montreal, the students were able to feel some of the ' 'French Atmosphere' ' that they have been reading and studying about. The personal touch given these classes by our French teachers made the learning part not so tedious and a lot of fun. Thanks, ladies! Ms. Janice Pedrin takes a McDonalds break. HISTORY INSTRUCTS AND ENHANCES The History Department added a new member this year. V.U.H.S. welcomes Mr. Boring. He is very well liked by his students. Through various interesting methods of teaching, the History De -partment has presented a clear, precise picture of our past. History has never been this much fun! These programs and instructors which provide individual learning experiences include: Operation Advance-Dennis Doughty, Outward Bound-Jeff Neilson, Reading-Mary-Ellen Sessa and Ann Sullivan, Individualized Instruction-Thelma Oxholm, Title I: Visual Literacy-Marilyn Woods, Special Services Coordinator-Gail Lynk, District Aide-Sheryl Thurber, Special Services Aide-Jean Wilson, Consultant Teacher-John Willard, District Aide-Barbara Fitzpatrick, Dr. Sally Ives-District Psychologist. We know these programs will be successful and rewarding in the future years. 13 THERE’S NEVER BEEN A BETTER SOUND The bubbly, cheerful enthusiasm of our new Music Director, Miss Susan Philputt, caught on and captivated all the students. Measuring in at a tall height, Miss Philput aided and guided the students through a busy year. Miss Philputt, we want you to know, we love you! ip f o ir -r+-r+- whf: a m i • _ e— A SALUTE TO THE ARTS GYM AND SHOP BUILD AND DEVELOP These classes combine the learning of skills with the ability to use them. Gym students, under the guidance and watchful eye of Mrs. Francis and Coach Connors, learned many skills while theii own personal abilities grew greatly. Harmon Boyce and Scott Lynk also use the same approach. All their students leam the necessary skills and receive individual support and encouragement. V.U.H.S. has a special faculty and these are some of our best. J Above: Mr. Scott Lynk and his spotlessly clean desk. Harmon Boyce- Shop Teacher. 16 Coach Bill Connors and his prized hat! STEERING A HEALTHY COURSE You might not consider Driver Education and Health mix-able , but they are. Mr. Roland Guyette instructs students on the safe and correct ways of driving while Mrs. Pat Rockwell is always here to help us with medical problems. Each of them help us to reach a certain life goal. It's a safe and healthy one, too! 17 GUIDANCE AIDS AND ASSISTS The 1978-79 Guidance Department never has a quiet moment. Through daily contacts, their concern has branched out and touched every part of the school. Their knowledgeable assistance guided many students through problems about colleges, applications tests and meetings. Without their aid, our school could not function. Ms. Angie Dykema: Guidance Department secretary Guidance Department Chairman: Mr. Richard Burke Mrs. Maggie Coulman: Guidance Mr. Ray Davidson: Guidance Counselor Counselor 18 QUALITY, QUANTITY, AND VARIETY Mrs. Beth Phillips, Librarian. Mrs. Ruth Ore, librarian. Not only does the V.U.H.S. library hold its volume of books but also the continued friendship and guidance of Mrs. Beth Phillips, Mrs. Ruth Ore, and Mrs. Joy Abbott. Whether looldng for material for a student's term paper or finding someone an interesting book, our librarians are an important part of our school life. Mrs. Joy Abbott, Librarian. COOKS AND JANITORS HELP OUT The Vergennes Union High School has two groups of individuals that we take for granted: our culinary staff and our janitorial staff. They work long hard hours to make our school a lot nicer. Credit is hardly given to these people and we'd like to change that. Ladies and gentlemen thanks, and we love you. Keep up the good work! If all legends are forgotten and all heroes are soon gone, Just remember I'm standing near like I've been all along. Some faces we'd never seen, but time has passed. We walked through the lunch line. We talked in the halls and before long we stood proud and tall. We've won Winter Carnival. We've done our share. We've made this school know we were there . We've partied together. We've all become friends. And we all know our friendships will never end. It seems like only yesterday, today was so far away. But as friends we are . . . We'll meet again someday. — J.M.M. 23 VUHS FACES 24 NOW, AREN’T THEY CUTE WE’VE GOT SOME CUTIES Fran is always looking to improve herself by reading. 4 David and Chris, what's the matter now? ! Our activities seemed to be inclined to the spiritual side of things rather than the financial side. This year we under went a change in advisorship and our priorities. Ms. Taylor is our current adviser. This year we tended to be terribly financially oriented because we have a $300 deficit. Hopefully, next year we can meet the $150 scholarship fund we were unable to meet this year. The scholarship award is given to a deserving senior in June. We repainted the cafeteria wall that had for so long darkened our community dining hall. Our winter carnival was a superb success this year and the level of spirit and energy was high. -David Bicknell-Student Council Pres. 33 SPIRIT RISES FOR TEAMWORK SPIRIT! That's what Winter Carnival brought to V.U.H.S. For a whole day, classes ceased and it was grade vs grade. The classes pulled together, and worked as a whole. There was a lot of fun and the sportsmanship was at a high level. The faculty even tackled a game of volleyball with the Seniors and Juniors. It shows that COMMODORES have power! 34 “78”- WINTER ”78” “79” CARNIVAL -“79” THEY’VE ONLY JUST BEGUN Wayne Abare Vincent Alio David Ambrose Ronald Atkins Brad Aubin Tammy Austin Annette Badore Brace Barr Tammy Beirhom Flaine Belanus Sheila Bigelow Daniel Bodette David Briggs Beth Burnham Diana Bush Lewis Bush Andrea Bushey Gail Bushey Kathryn Chagnon Mary Chapman Patrick Charlebois Micheal Charron William Claflin Bradley Clark Jackie Connolly The seventh graders came to the school nervous and scared. A sensational cast of actors and actresses, led by Dwayne Fulford, Susan Wilson, Holly Franklin, Mitch Davis and David Tisbert captivated the audience with The Crucible. The play dealt with the Salem Witch Trials, and was extremely difficult to do. Each individual put hours upon hours of work into their characters. Superbly directed by Ms. Maida Townsend, The Crucible is one of the most difficult and yet best dramatic performances ever put on here at Vergennes Union High Schoo. r W W T ■ vfe D'%; Director Ms. Maida Townsend POWER PACKED PERFORMANCE 43 EIGHTH GRADE ENTERS SCHOOL J. From the beginners in the Junior High squad to the elder Varsity squad, each girl put many hours of work and effort into their routines. With Fran Alio aiding the girls, it was a winning combination. Everytime they appeared to do a cheer, their Commodore pride was displayed. Their routines had polish, were precise and they were always cheering. We've got quite a cheering section! Vincent FOR WE SHALL NOT BE BEAT 51 SPORTS X-COUNTRY ON THE RUN . . . Endurance and hard work really paid off for the X-Country teams this year. They spent hours of hard work and showed their results in every meet they attended. Coach Doughty was there all the time, giving instruction and support when it was needed. His superb abilities aided the atheletes all year. It takes special qualities to be a runner. You need to endure and push yourself to excel in your own capabilities. There is one certain individual whom yearbook would like to salute. Cindy Provost overcame health obstacles to achieve great feats and should be recognized for it. V.U.H.S. has a group to be proud of. These Commodores really showed their spirit. A GOOD YEAR FOR ALL Top: Coach Daughty, J. Dam, R. Blacklock, L. Martel, E. Rockwell, R. Childers, Bottom: S. Fulford This year's Varsity Soccer team proved to be one of the great sports success stories in recent V.U.H.S. history. Returning only eight lettermen from last year's team, a group of inexperienced but dedicated athletes compiled a record to be proud of. Combining a group of enthusiastic underclassmen and a disciplined and capable senior corps, the varsity broke two school records: Goals Scored (33) and Wins In A Season (8). Led by the goal production of Kevin LeCompte (9), John Polchies (5), Tom Brigan (6) and Dewayne Fulford (4) the varsity advanced to the Quarter-Final in state play before bowing out. With 12 underclassmen due to return, next year appears promising but the contribution of this year's Seniors will not soon be forgotten. 58 SHOWS HOW IT’S DONE . . . Senior Kim Weeks, Scorekeeper. GYMNASTS EXERCISE POISE, CONTROL AND FORM WE’VE GOT THE TEAM The skills, years of practicing and the ability to use the best of each is what our Varsity girls team is all about. Eventhough the team's size is small, the girls are big on skills and spirit. Every game played is a challenge that they gave their best. The skills of the Junior class members was an added benefit and aided the team in many a tight spot. Coach Yvonne Hawkins instructed the team and was with them every step of the way. The Commodores have an energy about them and this team is the perfect example of it. Every game was met with a smile and was given their best. We've got an exceptional group of individuals and athletes to be proud of. They 're part of our Commodore Power! The V.U.H.S. Varsity Girls Basketball team: Back- D. Hodgman, manager, D. Hedges, M.L. POWERHOUSE The J.V. Powerhouse: J. Turpin, A. Messinger, H. Haigas, A. Mace, D. Meader, L. Char-ron, R. Seamen, L. Breur, and T. Brace. Power and speed are the factors behind our J.V. team's great season. The girls worked out very hard and their performance showed it. Comprised of a small group of girls, team work became essential for their games to be succ essful. The size of the team allowed each individual to become masterful of the skills of the game. Coached by Sally Torrey, the J.V. Girls Team gave it their all on every game. They're one reason the Commodores are here to stay! 68 JUNIOR HIGH’S WINNING STYLE A large group of girls and a super amount of enthusiasm made this years team one to remember. Playing together for the first time can sometimes cause problems, but not for this team. Working together, they put in one of the finest seasons ever. The long practices and work paid off, every time they set foot on a court. Their style developed to be a superb reminder of the kind of atheletes and competitors they will be in the future. J. The students participate in such ancient and modem techniques as pottery, metal smelting, herbal foods, medicines, glass blowing, papermaking, and architecture . Each student spends a day working with alocal artist. CAST not only brings the students to a better understanding of our world: present-past, but it brings our community and school closer together through education. 85 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY National Honor Society Members: S. WHILE VISIONS OF FINISHING DANCED IN THEIR HEADS. AND COOKIE WITH HER PENCIL, AND JOAN WITH HER PAPER, HAD JUST SETTLED DOWN FOR ANOTHER LONG CAPER. WHEN OUT IN THE HALL, THERE AROSE SUCH A CLATTER, THAT WE SPRANG FROM OUR SEATS, TO SEE WHAT WAS NEAR. AWAY TO THE DOOR, WE DASHED LIKE DEER, FLUNG IT OPEN TO SEE WHAT WAS HERE. WHEN TO OUR WONDERING EYES SHOULD APPEAR BUT JANICE AND SHERYL. OUR ADVISORS DEAR. AT SIX WE ALL SETTLED DOWN FOR A BITE. GRINDERS AND SODA. WE SHARED FOR THE NIGHT. THE HOURS ROLLED BY, AND THE PAGES ROLLED PAST. AND BY TEN WE ALL THOUGHT THE NIGHT WOULD FOREVER LAST. BY ELEVEN WE WERE NEAR DONE. BUT THERE WERE MORE LAYOUTS TO CHECK, AND 3R'S TO THROW THAT HAD BEEN WRECKED. THERE WERE PICTURES STILL MISSING. SENIORS WITH NO QUOTES, AND COPY TO WRITE THAT NO ONE WROTE. BUT IT HAPPENED ONE MARCH NIGHT, THAT ALL THE PAGES WERE DONE. AND AT LAST WE ALL SETTLED FOR A NIGHT OF FUN. SO OFF WE ALL WENT, TO OUR LITTLE PARTY. TO CELEBRATE THE OCCASION, AND EAT HEARTY. AND NOW MY DEAR FRIENDS, OUR WORK IS ALL DONE. AND WE HOPE YOU LIKE IT, CAUSE IT WASN'T ALL FUN. NOT EVERYTHING IS PERFECT, BUT WE DID OUR BEST FOR YOU. YEARBOOK PUTS IT ALL TOGETHER The staff of this year's book attempted to add many new concepts, while maintaining the high standards required for a successful yearbook. There were modifications made in the book's make-up. Each change was carefully thought out and we feel is a benefit to the yearbook. We attempted to express our pride and Commodore Spirit in this book. The school is a superb one, with one of the best faculty - student relationships to be found. This was another area we tried to work into. The work that went to finish this is minimual compared to the amount of pride we feel at its completion. We're proud of our Blue and White, our school, and to be Commodores . There are not any finer to be found! Cookie Thomas The Class of '79 -Joan Marsh- There's a lot of dreams we've got to follow; a lot of roads ahead to travel on. But whatever we do, wherever we go we'll always be friends. Some of us will search for rainbows; others will settle for what is known. Now we all know we must go, but the class of '79 will do just fine. We've shared six years together; learning new things and old. We laughed everyday, never knowing we would say, ' 'Good-bye, 1 love you, so long.'' There's a lot of mistakes we've got to learn from; a lot of tears to be shed. But even though that's so, we all know the class of '79 will always shine. One more time let us say together; for all the good times we've known. Some classes are great, but only one is might fine-The class of '79. One more time let us smile together and pray for all the good times to come. Remember that it's so, friendships never go and the class of '79 will last forever. % ONCE IN A DREAM FAR BEYOND Due to an error-Pam's baby picture was left out of the baby section-sorry Pam! Our Senior year started off on September 5, 1978, a bright Tuesday morning with 108 registered VUHS Seniors, but students came and went. On October 32 we sponsored a dress-up day for Halloween. The day ended with an exciting assembly in which we gave prizes for the best dressed. Selena Dike won first prize as ' 'Laveme.'' On December 1 we sponsored a ' 'Hat Day'' and gave away prizes for the best hats. Our own Jon O'Brien came in first. To raise money we also had food sales, .154 a-dip suppers, and the last dance of the year. To show our spirit we challenged the school in a Christmas decorating contest. ' 'Seventy-nine is mighty fine,'' echoed through the gym during the Winter Pep Rally, held on Dec. 8, while handfuls of confetti snowed upon the Senior Section. During a class meeting on Nov. 30, Joan Marsh played our class song, ' 'The Class of '79, which she composed. All in all our Senior year will always be remembered by us, the school, and our friends!
