Blue and White Dear Friends: The final result of those countless yearbook meetings is right before your eyes. Putting together a yearbook involves much hard work and brain-racking, but the finished product always brings a great deal of satisfaction to those who helped assemble it. This year was no exception. It has truly been a pleasure working on the yearbook, and I sincerely hope that our efforts please you. There are many who have always been ready to help. I want to extend sincere thanks to my staff who worked many long hours; to Mrs. Berry, who provided typists; to Mrs. Jones, our excellent proofreader; to Mr. Crown, whose patience and cooperation made this yearbook possible. To Mrs. Norton, I extend sincere thanks for her interest and help. Lloyd W. Moulton came to Vergennes as superintendent of the Addison Northwest District in 1947. In September of that year one school on Green Street housed all the Vergennes elementary and high school students. Addison had five one-room schoolhouses. Ferrisburg had ten. Charlotte had seven. Monkton had four, and Waltham had two. Mr. Moulton’s goal was to consolidate and improve the educational opportunities of the district. Within two years a new central school in Charlotte replaced the seven buildings. A new elementary school opened its doors to Vergennes pupils on September, 1950. At this time Waltham closed its own schools and transported the elementary pupils to the new school in Vergennes. In 1953 Addison built a new grammar school, com-solidating its small units into one modern school overlooking Lake Champlain and the Adirondacks. Ferrisburg replaced its ten buildings by one central school in September 1956. Monkton completed its central school in 1960. Mr. Moulton was happy with the consolidation of the elementary schools in each town. However, the realization of his fondest dream for the youth of the district came with the opening of Vergennes Lnion High School in September 1959. This school is financed by—and serves the secondary educational needs of—Vergennes, Ferrisburg, Addison, Panton, and Waltham. Therefore, the Class of 1964 dedicates this issue of the Blue and White to the late Superintendent Lloyd W. Moulton—in gratitude for his understanding and devoted effort on behalf of the youth of this area.

Members of the Graduating Class: Oliver Wendell Holmes once said, “The great thing in this world is not so much where we are, but in what direction we are going.” It is this thought that I ask you to ponder a moment in evaluating your present status in life. Undoubtedly you will immediately recall fond memories of the past and elaborate dreams of the future. If each of you graduates will be what you are and become what you are capable of becoming. I am sure you will be heading in the right direction. As you leave Vergennes Union High School keep open the windows of your mind—open to those who have wisdom and experience to offer you and open to those who may benefit from your knowledge and guidance. Each of you has something to offer for the betterment of society. Wherever you may go and whatever you may do, be sure to give your utmost at all times. Congratulations to each of you, and may the best that life can give be yours. A. Robert Twiss Superintendent of Schools
