— y ■ BLUE AND WHITE 1964 V ergennes Union High School Vergennes, Vermont 1 Lloyd W. Moulton came to Vergennes as superintendent of the Addison Northwest District in 1947. In September of that year one school on Green Street housed all the Vergennes elementary and high school students. Addison had five one-room schoolhouses. Ferrisburg had ten. Charlotte had seven. Monkton had four, and Waltham had two. Mr. Moulton’s goal was to consolidate and improve the educational opportunities of the district. Within two years a new central school in Charlotte replaced the seven buildings. A new elementary school opened its doors to Vergennes pupils on September, 1950. At this time Waltham closed its own schools and transported the elementary pupils to the new school in Vergennes. In 1953 Addison built a new grammar school, com-solidating its small units into one modern school overlooking Lake Champlain and the Adirondacks. Ferrisburg replaced its ten buildings by one central school in September 1956. Monkton completed its central school in 1960. Mr. Moulton was happy with the consolidation of the elementary schools in each town. However, the realization of his fondest dream for the youth of the district came with the opening of Vergennes Lnion High School in September 1959. This school is financed by—and serves the secondary educational needs of—Vergennes, Ferrisburg, Addison, Panton, and Waltham. Therefore, the Class of 1964 dedicates this issue of the Blue and White to the late Superintendent Lloyd W. Moulton—in gratitude for his understanding and devoted effort on behalf of the youth of this area. ROW 1: Thiess, Mrs. Norton, Casey, J. Smith, L. Smith, G. Tucker, Paquette, Bushey, Clark. Putting together a yearbook involves much hard work and brain-racking, but the finished product always brings a great deal of satisfaction to those who helped assemble it. This year was no exception. It has truly been a pleasure working on the yearbook, and I sincerely hope that our efforts please you. There are many who have always been ready to help. I want to extend sincere thanks to my staff who worked many long hours; to Mrs. Berry, who provided typists; to Mrs. Jones, our excellent proofreader; to Mr. Crown, whose patience and cooperation made this yearbook possible. To Mrs. Norton, I extend sincere thanks for her interest and help. Sincerely, Gail Tucker EDITOR --------------------------------------------------------- Gail Tucker ASSISTANT EDITORS --------------------------------------------- Nancy Lamont Judy Smith Pat Chushman BUSINESS MANAGER ______________________________________________ Gary Bushey ASSISTANT BUSINESS MANAGERS .................................... Pam Paquette 3 Members of the Graduating Class: Oliver Wendell Holmes once said, “The great thing in this world is not so much where we are, but in what direction we are going.” It is this thought that I ask you to ponder a moment in evaluating your present status in life. Undoubtedly you will immediately recall fond memories of the past and elaborate dreams of the future. If each of you graduates will be what you are and become what you are capable of becoming. I am sure you will be heading in the right direction. As you leave Vergennes Union High School keep open the windows of your mind—open to those who have wisdom and experience to offer you and open to those who may benefit from your knowledge and guidance. Each of you has something to offer for the betterment of society. Wherever you may go and whatever you may do, be sure to give your utmost at all times. Student Council Last May the student body elected the following officers for the school year 1963-1964: President, James Sullivan; Vice President, Carol Morse; Secretary, Mary Jackman; and Treasurer, Nancy Lamont. With the help of our faculty advisor, Mrs. Clark, the Student Council put on a successful Freshman Reception welcoming the freshmen to V.U.H.S. In November the Sadie Hawkins Dance was a tremendous success. Original skits were given by all classes and music was provided by “The Vistas.” In the spring the council was responsible for the annual Vocations Conference, to which students from neighboring schools are invited. Late in November the Student Council sponsored a time-saving change in regulations: Students are no longer required to report to their homerooms for dismissal. Also the Council voted to contribute to the construction of an outdoor biological laboratory in memory of our late superintendent, Mr. Lloyd Moulton. It has been the aim of the Student Council to better our school in all possible ways. To this end, the Council has appointed a standing committee on school improvements. 44 ROW 1: Mr. Crevier, S. They presented three humorous skits. Mrs. Ronald Gagnon spoke in French on the Christmas traditions in Canada. On February 21 the Latin students observed a Latin Slave Day. The evening activities required that all first-year Latin students be dressed as slaves. They enjoyed games, dancing, and refreshments. And, of course, the “slaves” were initiated. The French students planned a “Mi-Careme Program” for March and a Language Club Tea in May. FIRST ROW: Moulton, Bordeaux. LeBeau, L. Bushey, Ryan, Austin, Kolbe, Rossier, Roberts, Hanson, S. This year the Club sponsored the senior play ‘ Little Women” in November. Three one-act plays were presented in March. These included “Sorry, Wrong Number,” “I Love You Truly,” and “The King’s Servant.” The junior play “Penny” was the last production of the year. Each member was given an emblem on which a flaming Olympic torch and gloved hands are joined in friendship. Members must attend all business meetings, and come to practice whenever possible. The Gym Club plans intramural and interscholastic competition on the parallel bars, the trampoline, the horse, in tumbling, and in free exercise. The following officers w'ere elected for 1963-1964: President, Pat Hamel; Vice President, Deborah Poquette; and Secretary-Treasurer, Paula Christofoletti. 57 C. Daniels, C. O’Brien, G. Tucker, A. Casey, S. Cameron, Mrs. Evarts, S. Sisters. Librarians The librarians are an invaluable part of the high school. Their duties include: checking books, shelving according to the Dewey Decimal Classification, helping fellow pupils, assisting in the preparation of new books for library use, and cataloguing periodicals and books. We are very fortunate to have such an enthusiastic group of workers in the high school. Science Club challenged by our Modem Day The Science Club officers for the current year are: Connie Tucker; Vice President, Paul Sisters; Secretary, Lynn Jackman; and Treasurer, Mike Duany. The Science Club is open to all students of the junior and senior high school, regardless of the number of science courses a student has taken. An interest in Science is the only requirement for membership. Groups from the Club have visited the Fairbanks Museum in St. Johnsbury and the telescope at Middlebury College. The Club also sponsored a Science Night in the spring. ROW 1: Mr. Marshall, Anderson, Duany, Tucker, Sisters, Jackman, Swenor, Lamont, Mr. Rood. ROW 2: S. In the fall the Varsity Club sponsored a Pep Rally. A bonfire and snake dance were features of the rally. In January, a second Pep Rally was sponsored for the basketball teams. The students were especially entertained by a band composed entirely of the faculty. ROW 1: Jones, G. Iucker, Poquette, Hatch, Ryan, Wilcox, Morse, Swinton. ROW 2: Miss Bishop, Crown, C. Clark, Angier, Tucker, Soccer This year the soccer team did exceptionally well considering that the starting players sustained many injuries. The high point of the season was the defeat of Milton, a strong opponent. Charlie Tucker was the leading player. However, he was unable to finish the season after receiving a leg injury. Other seniors who contributed much to the team were Brian Clark and Jim Sullivan. The team started the season with twenty-two players and, instead of losing, they ended with a squad of twenty-six. Veterans—Louie Muzzy, Tom Bar-rows, Terry Moore, and Mike Brinkman—gave determined effort to the game. Newcomers—John Angier, Bernard Dubois, and Billie Yantz—showed fine potential for another year. Cross-Country Having lost its mainstay by graduation in June, the 1963 Cross-Country squad faced a strenuous schedule with an inexperienced group of runners. Added to the loss of many of its experienced members, the squad encountered several injuries to key runners. Twenty boys answered the challenge to keep the reputation of Vergennes Union High School as a strong contender for state honors in Cross-Country. This group consisted of seven juniors, six sophomores, and seven freshmen. In spite of the inexperience of the runners, they compiled an outstanding record by winning eleven and losing eight duel meets. The team finished the season by placing sixth in the state meet out of twenty-eight schools entered—the largest entry in the history of the Vermont State Meet. Because the squad was composed entirely of underclassmen, prospects for a fine year next fall are very encouraging. 63 Moorby, Ball, Burpee, Spencer, LeBoeuf, Hatch, 64 Varsity Basketball Moore, Clark, Tucker. The value of the 63-64 basketball campaign of VUHS cannot be measured in wins and losses. It must be measured in terms of the development of the character and talents that the players derived from hours of practice and experience. In a building year, dominated largely by sophomores and juniors, Vergennes managed to improve over last year’s record by two wins. The season started badly and it was some time before the team was playing as a w'hole, due to the sickness and absence of key players. Spirit remained high throughout the year and spurred the players on. Although next year we will lose the services of high-scoring Charlie Tucker and his backcourt companion Brian Clark—Norman LeBoeuf, Pete Hatch, Terry Moore, Ronald Moorby and Winston Ball will return. Hopes are high for next year and the team is expected to be one of the best teams produced in a number of years. Coach—MR. AYER Manager—DALE EASTER 65 Varsity Basketball The Vergennes Union High Commodorettes, under Coach Margaret Bishop, finished the season with an 8-6 record. This season was mainly a building year for Coach Bishop as she lost her entire first string Varsity last year. The agility of Co-captain Mary Wilcox, the accuracy of Carol Morse, and the height of Susan McEvila were assets to offensive plays. Roving guard Deb Poquette was able to sink many helpful baskets. Mary finished the season with a total of 78 points; Carol—129 points; Susan—49 points; and Deb—42 points. The Vergennes girls outscored their opponents 382-317. Mary, as roving forward, also showed her agility at the defensive end of the court. She intercepted many passes that meant points for us. Deb was also there struggling every minute. Much of the team’s success was due to Linda Patterson and Clara Danyow’s constant and reliable work under the basket. Next year the students at Vergennes should anticipate a really good team because they will have all their regular team back except one, Carol Morse. Our Varsity team will be tough to beat!
