We, the staff, agree that producing the '63 Blue and White has been a rewarding endeavor. For me, editing the '63 Blue and White was a privilege. From the bottom of my heart comes deep appreciation to my staff who worked many long hours. I wish to thank Mr. Crown, who was patient and cooperative throughout the year; Mrs. Berry, who made it possible to have excellent typists on hand; and Mrs. Jones, who was kind enough to give us helpful hints. I wish to take this time to thank Mrs. Norton, our sponsor, who devoted many hours and who always showed sincere interest in the production of the Blue and White. Mrs. Clark became the faculty advisor. In September, the Council made name tags for all of the student body and faculty. This encouraged the Freshmen to get acquainted more easily and assured the success of the Council-sponsored Freshman Reception. In November, the Sadie Hawkins Dance was a tremendous success. Music was provided by a Burlington disc jockey, and each class presented an original skit. Audrey, Sally, and George attended the State Convention in Randolph in November. Council projects have been a school song, the suggestion box, and the cafeteria bulletin board. In the spring the Council again sponsored the annual Vocations Conference, to which students from neighboring schools were invited. 30 Otu Lmd Cowvtil FIRST ROW: Baldwin, Hunt, Vrooman, Thurber, Scott, Benton. An enthusiastic group of helpers will do much to sell the library idea. Each library member is given varied duties: charging books, shelving according to Dewey Decimal Classification, helping fellow pupils, helping to prepare new books for library use, and cataloguing periodicals and books. Librarians must be recommended by a teacher, pass all subjects, have high citizenship rating, have an attitude of helpfulness and willingness to do any task assigned, and have a neat and attractive appearance. Better understanding of library services in an outcome of pupil help. This year we have eighteen capable librarians. Pictured below are the Senior librarians. The Junior librarians are: Cheri O'Brien, Janet Caron, Rita Jennings, Sheila Cameron, Gail Tucker, Susan Rossier, Karen Ganson, and Susan Sisters. QoCjC u The 1962 V.U.H.S. Senior squad consisted of twenty boys. The team was evenly divided between veterans and newcomers. Elected Tri-Captains were: fullback Mike Sullivan and veteran wings Jim Bodette and Charlie Tucker. Other veterans were Bill Wisell, George Wisell, and Mike Brinkman. Stocky Paul Turpin played center halfback while Tom Barrows and Jay Vrooman filled the other halfback positions. Fullbacks Mike Sullivan and Pete Hatch kept Vergennes' offensive hopes alive. Louis Muzzy, backed by Jim Sullivan, covered the spot between the goal posts. Showing continuous effort and good sportsmanship, Vergennes finished the season with a record of 4-5-1. Coach Gordon Ayer and the team are to be congratulated for their dogged determination and fair play exhibited on the soccer field. 68 Or tfi Cpotk . . . FIRST ROW: Jerger, C. C iO -Couttt'Uj Sixteen boys made up the Vergennes Cross-Country team. Of these, twelve were returning veterans. The team had a very successful season, winning all their dual meets except one. Great team spirit led the squad to the State Championship, with a low score of sixty-two points. Rice Memorial High of Burlington placed second with seventy-two points. The team also took part in the New England meet held at Orono, Maine. Vergennes finished in twelfth place, competing against championship teams from all the New England states. Leading Vergennes in all the meets were Charlie Bradford, Bill Munnett, Ken LaFountain, Eugene Bradford and Wayne Crown. Charlie Bradford set a new record for the Vergennes course, formerly held by Bobby Giersburg. Although four of Vergennes' top five runners will graduate in June, hopes are high for another good team next year. 70 S. Tatro, C. Jones, S. Thurber, M. Wilcox, C. Adams, B. Bradley, K. McNulla, S. Laura Yantz led the team in scoring with a total of 133 points. To Laura's shining quality of accuracy under the basket, she also added grace on the court. Betsey Benton came through with an outstanding 124 points. She was honored as a member of the All-State team ('61-'62) and set a high standard in play and sportsmanship. Claire Adams was the senior who played the roving position. In her position on the court, she always played hard. Sandi Thurber, roving guard, was also honored as an All-State player ('61-'62). Our Sandi was agile at interception and her sportsmanship will long be remembered at VUHS. Much of the team's success was due to Bonnie Bradley's constant and reliable work under the basket. Judy Johnson, one of our best defensive players, kept the points of the opposition to a minimum. They will be missed on the court. Sophomore starlet, Mary Wilcox, fascinated the spectators with her energetic handling of the ball. Those who showed great potential for the future Varsity team are Carol Morse, Debbie Poquette, Kitty Swinton, and Susan McEvila. V. Opps. Although the won-lost record of this Commodore team will not shine brightly in our history, it was a year in which a predominately sophomore team gained much valuable experience for future seasons. As in the case with most inexperienced teams, play at times bordered on the brilliant and then fell off to an inferior brand. However,' as the year progressed, there was overall improvement and it is a real tribute to this group of boys that their spirit and desire remained at such a high level despite a very difficult schedule. The service of seniors—Bill Wisell, Jim Bodette, and George Wisell—will be missed, but the hopes for the future rest upon the shoulders of underclassmen who gained valuable experience. These underclassmen are: Charles Tucker, Dennis Campbell, Norman LeBoeuf, and Peter Hatch. Coach Gordon Ayer is looking forward to a much improved team next season as the top three scorers—Charlie Tucker, Dennis Campbell, and Norman LeBoeuf—will return next season. Norman, incidentally, set a school record in winning the foul shooting trophy with a mark of 73%. B. Clark, J. Bodette, P. Hatch, D. Campbell, N. LeBoeuf, W. Munnett, T. Moore, G. Wisell, C. The top scorers were Linda Patterson, 66 points,- Clara Danyow, 48 points; Gloria Eubar, 46 points; Cleone Jones, 26 points; and Sharon Tatro and Sue McEvila, 22 points. The team shows tremendous potential as illustrated by the strong forward line. All the girls displayed good sportsmanship and poise. Needless to say, the entire student body anticipates a good Varsity team in the future. 76 MANAGERS: Poquette, Griffith ......   « «« , s,.„,y The difficulty of a Junior Varsity schedule is, of course, determined by the Varsity schedule. This year was no exception as we played many fine teams from equally large or larger schools. Many of these schools use their second team varsity as J.V.'s, and this always strengthens the competition. With this in mind, the Junior Varsity season was an impressive one. In any school the hope of future success in athletics lies in the freshmen and sophomores, and there is certainly an abundance of hope in Vergennes. Members of this year's Junior Varsity team who should see a great deal of action as Varsity players another year are Terry Moore, Brian Clark, John Spencer, and Winston Ball. Others who have done a fine job this year are Ronald Moorby, Robert Barney, William Spencer, John Wright, Peter Munnett, and Mike Duany. 77 COACH LANPHEAR FRONT ROW: Vrooman, Moore, Tucker, Austin, W.
