With our school year swiftly drawing to a close we hope to trace for you the memories and adventures of the past year. Our principal, teachers, classmates, and friends have all played an important part in this memorable year. We have attemped to present the memories through words and pictures. You, the students of V. U. H. S. have made it; you have lived it. We feel that your satisfaction with this volume is our compensation, and with this thought the staff presents to you the 1962 Blue and White. The list of Juniors on the Honor Roll has been very long. Several Juniors received the Honor Keys which are given when a student has been on the Honor Roll twelve times. The class is also proud of the Junior members of the National Honor Society. As usual, the class has been very active in extracurricular activities. Sports (both girls and boys), band, and chorus have attracted many Juniors. William Scott and Claudia Allen were the two Juniors selected to be on the Sno-Ball committee. Preparations for the Junior Prom were begun almost as soon as school began, so we are confident that we shall have one of the best Proms put on at V.U.H.S. Our Junior year has been a very happy and busy year at Vergennes Union High School. We are all looking forward to our Senior year. In the fall, fourteen other members joined with them and advisors, Mr. Jipp and Mr. Codding. The Council has been kept busy by much activity. It was granted permission to hold an annual Sadie Hawkins Dance and it sponsored the Second Annual Vocations Conference which surrounding schools attended. School spirit and school appearance were projects worked upon all year and resulted in assemblies, the bulletin board, a new school song, a suggestion box and a small pep band. In November, Bert, Claudia, Betsey, Pennie, Nancy and Audrey attended the convention of the Vermont Association of Student Councils at the Otter Valley Union High School in Brandon. Claudia and Pennie led a buzz session and Audrey ran unsuccessfully for a state office. Many thoughts, much information, and ideas were exchanged while there. The V.U.H.S. Student Council felt very fortunate for the first time this year, to have been allowed to attend faculty or school board meetings if an important issue arose. The Council feels that this privilege will bind together more closely the students and their adult leaders. First Row: Kirby, Ryan, Mr. Jipp, Larrow, Bristol. The local chapter received its charter in July 1953 and has since been actively promoting its aims and purposes - namely to promote and develop character, leadership, scholarship and citizenship towards a strong rural population. THE DEBATING CLUB The Debating Club was newly organized this year. Under the guidance of Mr. Jipp the two teams have debated the question: Resolved, the Federal Government Should Equalize Educational Opportunities by Means of Grants to the States for Public, Elementary and Secondary Education. These debates have been held in the surrounding towns of: Middlebury, Bristol, and Burlington. In Middlebury the teams won two out of four debates. The debates held in Bristol were for practice and were not formally judged. In Burlington the teams won three of the four contests. The affirmative team can account for three of the five wins; the negative team can account for two. As a novice team the debaters have been very successful. Students assist the Librarian by charging books during study hall. They also have the duty of assisting fellow students to find material for reports, of locating reserve books, and of making suggestions of good books to read for enjoyment and profit. In order to know that each essential library duty has someone assigned to be responsible for it, a schedule has been prepared for students to follow. SOCCER In the fall of 1961, twenty-two boys reported for the Soccer team. A few of these were returning veterans, bui most of them were freshmen and upperclassmen with little experience. Bobby Raymond, the great defensive stalwart, was elected team captain. The front line consisted of Tommy Tucker and Bobby Raymond, alternating at center forward, Bill Wisell and Jerry Roberts at the inside positions. Jimmy Bodette and Charlie Tucker rounded out the front line at the wing position. The defensive team, which proved to be successful, saw Bobby Raymond at center halfback, with Brian Gee and Bill Hatch in the other two halfback positions. The fullback positions were filled by Stanley Gokey and Mike Sullivan. Tommy Tucker and David Stephens alternated as the goalie throughout the season. The Vergennes Union High School Soccer team made their first appearance in the Marble Valley League this year. Although Vergennes was not too successful, four boys from Vergennes did make the Marble Valley League team. Bobby Raymond and Tommy Tucker were chosen for the second team while Brian Gee and Jimmy Bodette were alternates on the second team. Congratulations go to Coach Gordon Ayer and the Soccer team. Although they didn’t have a successful season they kept up their good sportsmanship throughout the year. School spirit, the spirit of the boys, and good hard running were the things which helped the cross-country team win all their dual meets in high school competition. The Vergennes team took second place in the State Cross-Country meet at U.V.M. Charlie Bradford placed fifth and William Munnett, came in thirteenth. Vergennes' final score was 76. Winsor tallied 64. William Munnett, Charles Bradford, Gerald Moulton, Eugene Bradford and Howard Clark led the running in all the meets. More freshmen appeared on the squad than in any other year. Although we shall lose some seniors, the remainder of the squad should improve next year and with the addition of new members, we all hope Vergennes will again place near the top in the State Meet. First Row, Left to Right: Raymond, Gokey, Gee, T. Tucker, Tarte. Second Row: Mr. Ayers, Munnett, C. Tucker, White, Atkins, Bodette, Wisell, Wright, Mr. Lamphear. VARSITY BASKETBALL The Vergennes Commodores' Basketball Club under Coach Gordon Ayer demonstrated an untiring zeal during this season. The starting lineup, with the exception of Captain Brian Gee and Robert Raymond, was relatively inexperienced. As the season progressed, the Vergennes team was often outclassed, yet its members gave their supporters some very exciting contests. Seniors who will be missed next year are: Brian Gee, Albert White, Thomas Tucker, Robert Raymond, Paul Tarte, Stanley Gokey and Arland Atkins. The hope for better seasons rests with underclassmen, such as: William Wisell, James Bodette, Charles Tucker, Norman LeBoeuf, Brian Clark, William Munnett and Dennis Campbell. We congratulate Coach Gordon Ayer and the entire squad for their unfailing good sport-manship and fair play. First Row: Mgr. Clark, Osgood, Hatch, Worthington, Mr. Lamphear, LeBeouf, J. Spencer, Campbell. Second Row: Crown, T. Spencer, Stanley, Jackman, Hatch, Devine, Barney, Clark, Baldwin, Burpee, Strobridge. JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL OPP. At the end of their practice period, the teams played for two weeks against each other until two teams remained in the competition. The championship team was determined in a play-off. We hope the interest that these boys have shown in Junior High School will prevail throughout their High School years. VanOrnum, Hunt, Olson, Pratt, Gatow JUNIOR CHEERLEADERS Front Row: Raymond, T. The Commodores will also have this year, Juniors, Jim Bodette, Larry Austin, Bill Hatch, Ken LaFountain and Bill Wisell. The returning seniors are. Bob Raymond, Tom Tucker and Brian Gee. With these veterans and many new and promising Freshmen, Coach Gordon Ayer is looking for a very rewarding season. Among the opponents in the 1962 season will be Bristol, Weeks and Hinesburg. First Row: Tatro, Stebbins, C. Adams, Mrs. Lanphear, Davis, Sisters, Jones. Second Row: Benton, S. Adams, Johnson, January, Tucker, Yantz. SOFTBALL The 1961 Softball team had a 2-1 record.
