Vergennes Union Migh School Vergemes, Vermont 1961 Blue and White The yearbook staff dedicates this edition of the Blue and White to the Cross-Country Team. Though the yearbook is dedicated to the team, this is a special tribute to Robert Giersberg, state cross-country champion. His spirit and determination led the team to victory in meet after meet and finally in the State meet. The entire school is proud of Bob and his accomplishments. We congratulate the team for their spirit and determination in winning all their meets except one. Their only defeat was by a college team - - the University of Vermont Freshmen. To Robert, we extend our best wishes for the future, and to the team, our hope for victories in the future. This record of activities of 1960-1961 is a memorial that we shall treasure the rest of our lives. As you glance through the book you will notice the traditional division pages are absent. In their place we have arranged sports, activities and social events chronologically as they took place in the year by seasons; thus the four seasons are represented on our cover. We, the staff, would like to express our sincere appreciation to our advisor, principal, teachers and students for their cooperation and help. We hope that you will enjoy this book as much as we enjoyed composing it. Blue and White Staff d fJUd 0 ROGER D. Soccer On September 9, twenty-three candidates including several veterans and a number of boys who will be of great help in the future, reported for soccer practice. Bob Gokey was appointed the team captain. With Jim Patterson at center forward and Dave Stephens in the goal, Vergennes looked forward to a good season. Rounding out the roster for the Commodores in the front lines was freshman Charles Tucker at right wing. Jerry Roberts, Tommy Tucker and Billy Wisell alternated at both right and left inside. Jimmy Bodette, a returning starter, gave several fine showings during the season. With Jim Patterson the only senior in the line, next year's team should have depth and experience. Defensively Vergennes was stronger than they have been in several years. Captain Bob Gokey at fullback, a defensive stalwart, will be missed next year. Brian Gee, a newcomer, played exceptionally well at centerforward. Donald Wright, playing opposite Bob Gokey at fullback, gave Vergennes always needed goal-stopping strength. Doug Miller and Mike Thompson played left and right halfback respectively, ?nd combined with the defense men to stop many opposing drives. Congratulations to Coach Gordon Ayer and his team for a season which had its ups and downs, but they never lost their zeal for fair play and good sportsmanship. FIRST ROW: Munnett, Porcheton, C. Student Council Last Spring the student body of the Vergennes Union High School held its Student Council elections and the following officers were chosen: Donald Peabody, President; Constance Thurber, Vice-President; Audrey Fishman, Secretary; and Claudia Allen, Treasurer. With many new members on the council, learning from the experience of the older ones, we seemed to be ready for much progress. In November, Donald Peabody, Claudia Allen, and Audrey Fishman with our advisor, Mr. Jipp, attended the state convention in Rutland. Many ideas and suggestions were brought back which can help to improve and inspire our own council. A major project of the year has been the preparation of a student handbook. The Point System for student activities has been revised. Charter requirements for the organization of new clubs have been drawn up. Throughout the year the student council has sponsored many dances and sold soda at all school dances. FIRST ROW: Morse, Allen, Peabody, Mr. Jipp, Thurber, Fishman, Ryan. After dropping five games in succession, the Commodores rebounded with consecutive victories over Brandon, Enosburg Falls, B. F. A. (Fairfax), West-port, Brandon, and Hinesburg. Vergennes was led by its captain, Jim Patterson, who brought to a close a great high school basketball career. A strong rebounder and sharpshooter, Patterson has started Varsity basketball ever since he was a Freshman. Scoring 422 points for the season and accumulating 100 points in four years of Varsity ball, Jim Patterson is by far the best basketball player in Vergennes in recent years. Rounding out the starting nucleus for Vergennes were guards John Horton and Dave Stephens and the two forwards Murray Finklestein and Bob Raymond. Dave Stephens, who has a good jump shot, and the playmaker, John Norton, were the backcourt men who set up most of the plays for the Commodores. Murray Finklestein, a newcomer, gave added strength to Vergennes with his one-hand push shot. Bob Raymond, a fine hustler grabbed many rebounds off defensive boards throughout the season. Brian Gee, Tom Tucker, Ed Pilger, Ken Hallock, and Bob Briggs gave added strength to Varsity whenever they were called upon. The highlight of this year's season was a trip to Springfield to participate in the Southern Class I Tournament. After defeating Fair Haven in the playoff, Vergennes was matched with Woodstock in the first round of the tournament. Vergennes lead at half-time, but fell to the lower end of a 43-37 score at the final buzzer. With only two starters, Jim Patterson and John Norton, graduating, Vergennes has a good chance of returning to the tournament next year. junior Varsity FIRST ROW: W. JUNIOR HIGH BASKETBALL Since Vergennes supports two fine high school basketball teams, time is very limited for an extensive program of junior high basketball. However, our junior high team is scheduled to play the surrounding schools of Middlebury, Bristol, Charlotte, and Ferris-burg. It will.compete in two tournaments, one at Bristol and one at Middlebury. Twenty-five seventh and eighth grade boys have turned out for practice this year. Those who should see a great deal of action are Dennis Campbell, Robert Barney, Wayne Crown, Steven Strobridge, Courtney Booth, and John Wright. It is our hope that the junior high group will have a successful season and gain a greater understanding and appreciation of the game and learn the true meaning of fine sportsmanship. Let us hope that the interest they now have for the game remains with them throughout their school years.
