We all owe a debt of gratitude to the citizens of the five communities whose taxes made this beautiful institution a reality. Now it is up to us, as faculty members, to do our utmost to motivate each student to work to the best of his ability; and as students, to realize that one only reaps in accordance with one’s efforts. Let us all cooperate so that we can justly say that Vergennes Union High School offers the young people of this area an excellent, well-balanced, and enriched education, which will help us all to grow academically, physically, and socially. We wish to thank Mrs. Norton, our faculty advisor, for her patient efforts and interests; Principal Crown and the teachers for their loyal support and cooperation; the Taylor Publishing Company for their fine craftsmanship; the Morris Studio for its fine workmanship and artistry; and our advertisers and subscribers, without whose cooperation and support this book would not have been possible. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY In keeping with a community spirit of encouraging scholarship and citizenship as represented by the new school and its vast new facilities, the National Honor Society was instituted at Vergennes Union High School in the spring of 1960. The first consideration for selection of members is scholarship. Before a student can even be considered for candidacy, he or she must have attained an overall scholastic average of 85 7° or better. However, scholarship is only part of the basis for selection of members. Therefore, when a candidate is considered he or she is also measured in terms of character, leadership, and service. The installation ceremony held in March was very impressive. The eleven charter members of The Otter Valley Chapter of the National Honor Society were presented to the Student Body and guests in an afternoon assembly. Following the assembly a tea was given by the faculty in honor of the new members and their parents. Mr. Oxley, the new director of the V.U.H.S. Band, began the year in preparation for the Christmas Concert on December 17, 1959. The modern facilities of the building and the many new pieces of music helped to make this annual event a time to remember for all of the thirty-five members who participated. The officers of the band for 1959-60 are: President, Ann Wisell; Secretary, Dorothy Fishman; and Publicity, Joyce Anderson. Those going to the annual All-State Music Festival are: Douglas Miller, Donald Peabody, Susan Benton, David Aubin, Ann Wisell, Joyce Anderson, and Gerald Ganson. At present the band is rehearsing pieces for the Spring Concert and the Music Festival. Mr. Oxley was born in Brooklyn, New York, where he took lessons in trumpet and studied music, and played in the band at the Brooklyn Conservatory. During World War II, Mr. Oxley played in the 371st Division Army Band. He has been band director at Middlebury Union High School for six years, and at present he is also director of the bands in the Bristol and Orwell Schools. Mr. Oxley is a member of the Vermont State Symphony, to which he devotes a great deal of time. The band wishes to express a great deal of appreciation to Mr. Oxley who has indeed helped to improve the musical talents of the band members. The Chorus also took part in the Champlain Valley Conference Choral Festival, and put on an operetta this spring. From this chorus thirty students were chosen to make up the choir. This smaller group has represented Vergennes Union High School on several occasions. Last fall the Choir went to Swampscott, Massachusetts to sing at the Convention of the New England Association of School Superintendents. Shortly after our return we sang at the dedication of our new school. The Choir also sang in a Variety Show in St. Peter's Parish Hall and gave a short Christmas Concert at the Elementary School. 'er who told us about her homeland, Holland--and a guest who tuned us in on high fashion for spring. Plans are now in progress for a fashion show featuring garments made by Vergennes students. I have enjoyed working with the F.H.A. 'ers as their president and wish to thank everyone for being so co-operative. F.H.A. THE SPANISH CLUB Last fall students who were taking or had previously taken Spanish met with their faculty advisor, Mrs. Bodette. The Club has two permanent officers, elected each year. The representative to Student Council is Ruth Baldwin: the Secretary-Treasurer is Jean Wheeler. The chairmanship of each meeting revolves among the different members. The main social event this year was the Christmas Party. At the Christmas Party slides on Spain and a talk on the Spanish-speaking people were given by Mrs. Marston, a member of the school faculty. This gives underclassmen a chance to participate in the club's activities. The officers elected for this year are: Consul -David Stephens, and Scriba - Sharon Ryan. Thr first meeting of the fall was called Ludi Romani. This featured Roman field day events. Participants were clothed in togas. Blue ribbons were awarded to the winner of each event. ’To, Saturnalia, a play in Latin depicting the celebration of the Saturnalis festival, was held on December twenty-second. History Club under the leadership of Mr. Jipp, the faculty advisor. Officers were elected as follows: President - Roger Jackson, Vice President - Joyce Anderson, Secretary-Treasurer - Ruth Baldwin. After the constitution was written, and approved by the Student Council, the History Club began holding regular meetings. As a public service for the Vermont Development Commission, the members sold subscriptions to The Vermont Life Magazine. Each meeting begins with a roll call on some historical figure or place. The meetings are held once a month. The History Club is a new organization at V.U.H.S. this year. It consists of varied programs, one of which was a trip to the.Shelburne Museum. t FIRST ROW: Vincent, Moulton, Giersberg, Raymond, Morse, Peabody, J. Fields. SECOND ROW: Bradford, Munnett, White, Coach Crown, S. Field, Craig, Danyow. CROSS COUNTRY This year climaxed 8 years of state competition for the home squad. Previous to this, Vergennes has taken top honors once and runner-up three times. Last fall there was stiffer and more competition that ever before. As can be seen in this partial list of scores, Rutland and Rice were the most apt to beat us in the State meet. Rutland 26, 32 Vergennes 29, 23 Rice 29,29 1 2 Vergennes 26,25 1 2 We had been beaten by one league team and hadn't raced St. Johnsbury previous to the state contest. On November 7, 1959, displaying great team effort and co-operation, the Vergennes Union High School Harriers outran St. J., Rutland and Rice. Vergennes compiled a total of 73 points; favored St. Johnsbury totaled 96. The squad's star runner Bobby Giersberg finished second, Bob Raymond fifth, Hap Moulton 18th, Ronnie Vincent 21st, and Tom Morse 31st. Sixth and seventh for the team were Don Peabody and Jim Field pushing other contenders back in their total points. Because of the field of individuals who did not count in team competition our score was lessened by four points. Vergennes, by winning the state crown, was automatically entered in the New England Cross-Countyr Meet held at Franklin Park in Boston. The team members were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Houghton Pearl, the former principal of VHS. They stayed at Thompson's Academy on Thompson's Island while in the Hub City. Vergennes can look for another successful season as all but four seniors return. Ronnie Vincent, Tom Morse and Stan and Jimmy Fields will be leaving us this June. Promising undergraduates are: Alva Vincent, Bert White, Bill Hatch, Keith Craig, Bill Munett, Jack Devine, Charles Bradford, Orville Daynow and Donald Peabody. FIRST ROW: Rogers, Guy, Gokey, Smith, Patterson, Stephens, Raymond, Sullivan. SECOND ROW: R. Wright, Field, D. Wright, Hallock, Booth, Norton,'Bodette, Wisell, Mr. Ayer. SOCCER This year marked the best season the soccer team has had in several years. We were able to break even by winning four games and losing four. With this record we finished second in the Champlain Valley Conference League. Three of the four loses were against league champions. James Patterson was the team's high scorer followed by Ralph Booth. The team will lose only two members by graduation. Led by senior Ralph Bugsie Booth and junior Jimmy Patterson, the Commodores seemed to keep their heads above water through the campaign. Sparked by back court men junior Johnny Norton and sophomore Dave Stephens and the hard fighting sophomore rebounder Bobby Raymond, the Commodores almost became the Cinderella' team of Southern Vermont. The quintet, labeled the five iron men, were aided a great deal in the latter part of the season by the return of veteran Carroll O'Connor. Sophomore jump shooter Paul Tarte and Carroll gave to the Commodores the depth they needed. With only two seniors on the squad the outlook for next year is bright. The Junior Varsity played a good schedule and produced many players that should give the Varsity depth in another year. 1959-1960 HOME OPPONENT Westport 38 42 Burr and Burton 43 41 Waterbury 53 41 Fair Haven 40 50 Middlebury 41 39 Hinesburg 46 37 Winooski 49 36 Fair Haven 48 47 B. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The Vergennes Union High Commodorettes under the guidance of Coach Dorothy Griswold ended the '59-'60 season with a 6-5 record. The team scored wins over rivals Bristol and Middlebury. The offense was paced by Senior forwards, Sue Benton, Ann Wisell, and Freshman Betsy Benton. However, the strong defense of guards, Mary Gebo, Barbara McNulla, and Charlotte Cameron, was often the deciding point of the game. By graduation the team will lose the services of forwards Sue Benton and Ann Wisell, and guard Mary Gebo. There are, however, many underclassmen who show promise for the sports year to come. Coach Griswold and the Commodorettes are to be congratulated for their fine, untiring efforts. OPPONENT V. OPPS. Only six students from the entire student body are eligible for this membership in the 1959-60 academic year. FIRST ROW: Field, Norton, Craig, Truax, Tucker. The team defeated their close rival, New Haven, but dropped two games to the Middlebury lassies. Because of rain the game scheduled with our arch rival, Bristol, was cancelled.
