THE BLUE AND WHITE VERGENNES HIGH SCHOOL 1958 VERGENNES VERMONT DEDICATION Ever since the world was created, men were destined to become brothers, to unite in peace toward development of a better world. In this day of atomic development this brotherhood is necessary for survival. All races must banish prejudices and work together, for no nation or race can now stand alone. Every improvement we initiate into a country is a reflection on us and our aims. This book is dedicated to brotherhood of man for peaceful coexistence and tolerance toward all men, for we were all created brothers. Freshman of so many falls Have passed along these halls. This class of '58, with them, Will end their stay at V. H.S. To meet the world And reach their goals; To have a taste of sweet success. They leave these halls. But memories of these four years, Our work, and joys, and happiness, Will quench our fears And steer us on to much success. Memories of our teams so old, We, the Commodores so bold. Of Vergennes High. The tried and true of V. H. S. Will soon be marching with the rest, Down these dim and dusky halls. Our shadows will drift with the rest. Along the halls of V.H. S. Until they cling To some book, chair, or desk. To sing of their joys and happiness. Oh! How quickly time will pass, Another year, another class. They'll pick-up the song, And follow along. Along the halls of V.H.S. THE JUNIOR CLASS In the fall of 1957, the Junior Class entered V. H. S. for a third year of study. Mr. South-wick was there to guide us along the right path. At once we set to work electing our class officers. The outcome of this election was: President, Marguerite Abair; Vice President, Rosanna Bodette; Secretary Daniel Ryan; Treasurer, William White. Our Student Council representatives were Leo Wimett and Constance Tucker. Several members of our class have added a great deal to school activities. With the help of our faculty advisor, Mr. Southwick, we put on a class play and planned our Junior Prom. Tragedy struck our class on September 15, 1957, when our beloved classmate Gary Smith was killed in a truck accident. Words cannot begin to express our loss. The class has voted a living memorial to the memory of Gary. The Sophomore Class is hoping to keep the spirit of the school high. Clarence Birchmore President Front row: D. Field, J. Norton, A. Vincent, Mr. Crown, T. Morse, C. Harris. The X-Country team enjoyed a most successful season by winning eight dual meets while losing one. This was handed to them by the UVM Freshmen. The team, with the exception of Roger Gevry, was composed entirely of underclassmen. Prospects for future successful seasons appear bright. The team finished seventh in the State Meet which was held during the flu epidemic; four of the first seven winners were unable to compete in the meet. SOCCER TEAM Left to right: M. Thompson, L. Hallock, L. Wright, J. Norton, Center: Mr. Ayer. An inexperienced Vergennes Soccer Squad composed primarily of freshmen and sophomores had a rugged eight game schedule with a record of one victory, four defeats, and three ties. While the record was not outstanding, the coach feels that much playing experience was gained by all squad members, a factor which should prove decisive in future seasons. First row: T. Morse, W. RECORD OF THE BASKETBALL SEASON Although the Commodorettes began the 1957-1958 season on the wrong foot by dropping their first two encounters to Milton and BFA of St. Albans, the girls then proceeded to win 11 of their next 13 starts. The peak of the girls’ performance was reached near the end of the playing season when the Commodorettes played brilliantly in defeating Bristol and Burlington - the latter a traditional nemesis. The girls' offensive patterns were paced by Mitzi Stephens, who tallied 284 points over the season's schedule, Gail Bristol who netted 229 points, Jean Norton who garnered 77 points, and Gail Mitchell who scored 56. However, on many occasions, it was the great defensive play of Jean Litch aided by another senior Marlene Booth and two very promising sophomores Dotty Fishman and Linda Bodette which spelled the margin of victory. The girls lose the services of such standouts as Mitzi Stephens, Gail Bristol, Marlene Booth, Jean Litch by the graduation route come the next season of competition. The girls and coach Gordan Ayer deserve the plaudits of the entire student body for achieving such a splendid record. Milton V OPPS. St. Mary's 76 40 Burlington 68 47 Although they won but four contests in 18 interscholastic starts, the Vergennes Commodores increasingly demonstrated, as the year progressed, a better knowledge of fundamental play as the boys began to master Coach Ayer's varied 1:3:1 offense. Throughout the season the spirit of the entire club was excellent, and for the most part the team gave it everything it had. There were memorable events during the season - the win over Weeks and the season finale over Bristol at Bristol. The loss of Jim Parkinson via the injury route during the third game was a severe blow to the Commodores offensive attack, although Parkinson managed to return to the lineup following recovery from his injury during the later stages of the playing season. As in the case with most inexperienced teams, play at times bordered on the brilliant and then fell off to an inferior brand. The play of Dick Cunningham, Russell Easter, Pete Hallock, Jim Parkinson, Ralph Booth and freshman Jim Patterson provided the ray of sunshine in an otherwise unrewarding season. The services of seniors, Jim Parkinson, Pete Hallock, Rodney Clark and Russell Easter, will be missed, but the hopes for better things to come rest upon the shoulders of underclassmen who gained their baptism under fire this year either with the varsity, junior varsijy, or 7-8 grade teams. The entire squad and coaches Gordon Ayer and Paul Healy are certainly to be congratulated for their untiring efforts. Seated: G. Bristol, M. Stephens, Mr. Ayer, Advisor, J. Wightman, J. Litch. Standing: J. Parkinson, P. Hallock, D. Cunningham. Membership in the Varsity Club is gained by participation in six seasons of varsity sports for boys and four seasons of varsity sports for girls. Bannister, R. Vincent, Mr. Southwich, P. Hallock, L. Wimett. Paced by the steady and effective pitching of senior Paul Stanilonis, the 1957 team won five and lost six baseball games. In CVL play the Commodores finished fourth in league play with four wins and four losses. This was the first year that the new Memorial Field was pressed into service. The hitting of Jim Parkinson stood out among the baseball memories as did the play of freshman outfielder, Ralph Booth. Another rebuilding task is in order during 1958 since five of last year's starters were lost through graduation. SOFTBALL TEAM First row: J. Litch, L. Clark, M. Booth, W. Tupper, Coach Crown, M. Stephens, L. Danyow, M. Gebo, P. Quinn, S. Benton, Second row; R. Smith, J. Wightman, S. Murray, A. Wisell, G. Bristol, S. German, R. Bodette, D. Hollenbeck. The girls' softball team played a rather limited schedule last Spring due to cancellations on account of rain. The offense was lead by sluggers Janice Jackson, Jean Litch, and Winona Tupper. Pitchers, Winona Tupper and Linda Clark, were backed by a rather weak defense at times, but this was more than compensated for by a strong offense. The team had a record of two wins and one loss. Everyone on the staff has co-operated and worked very hard to plan the Blue and White. A vote of thanks is especially due to Marion Sargent who has done a great deal of art work, Larry Barber who has worked on the pictures, David Lilly who has taken care of our business and Linda Clark who has been our typist. We hope that as you look through these pages which recall our life at Vergennes High School, you will be reminded that this book was dedicated to the brotherhood of all mankind. We think that a public school of this kind is a living example of Brotherhood for here, people of all faiths, races, and social standings can work, learn, and play together. Public high schools are an essential part of the American way of life. We pray that in the future all schools in the United States will be as free from prejudices as this one is and that all students can go to school side by side as brothers.
