We remember how eager, yet frightened we were On the day that high school began, And how quickly we seemed to become a part Of the happy V.H.S. clan. We remember, too, all the joys we shared. The teachers, classes, laughter, and fun; The clubs, the friends, the Junior Proms, The music, the sports, and the games we won. Yes, this is the end of our high school days. Hamel The Vergennes High Cross Country team, with Coach Crown, opened their season of nine meets on September 21, with a win over Waterbury. This gave promise of a successful year and bolstered the courage of the inexperienced members of the team. When the nine meets were over, we had come up with four wins out of the nine. Then came the State Meet. Roger Gevry and Richard Ashley were the only veterans of a state meet, while Gary Smith, Clarence Birchmore, Thomas Morse and I had our first state meet before us. Out of the twelve teams in the race, we took fifth while our junior, Roger Gevry, became State Champion! Russell Easter. Socc i Last fall twenty-two boys, including eleven returning lettermen, reported to Coach Southwick for soccer at our new field. After two weeks of hard practice and drills, the squad opened their season against Weeks School, losing a hard-fought game 3-0. After a slow start, losing the first three games, Vergennes came through with two straight victories. We ended the season with a record of two wins, five losses, and one tie. We, the staff of the BLUE AND WHITE yearbook for 1957, have been working diligently for several months to complete the picture story of the life of this school year at Vergennes High. As you open this book, we hope that you will become mindful of the living monuments wherein this is dedicated, for these youths will become fathers of our country. We wish to thank Mr. Crown, our principal, and Mr. Davison, assistant principal, for their loyal support; Miss Field, our faculty advisor, for her tireless help and interest; The Morris Studios, our photographers, for their excellent work; The Taylor-made Yearbook Company, for their fine workmanship; Robert Loomis, a senior, for his ever-ready help with snapshots, and our advertisers and subscribers whose financial aid has made this publication possible. We sincerely hope that you who have opened the cover of this story have opened the door to Living Monuments of Democracy.
