irls' Basketball FRONT ROW: J- Cochran, J. LeBeau, S. Hamilton, M. Hanna, M. Palmer, S. Mitchell SECOND ROW: B. Chamberlain, P. Aubin, Miss Yankowski Icoachj, C. Chamberlain J. Sweeney, M. Booth BACK ROW: R. Bristol, A. Langeway, S. Bush, M. Veysey V.H.S. girls' basketball team chalked up a busy season this year playing I3 games and winning seven. Under the direction of Coach Yankowski, the team shaped up nicely with Shirley Hamilton, Shirley Mitchell, and Margaret Hanna playing front court, and Joyce LeBeau, Mary Palmer, and Jessie Cochran taking the guard positions. We started the season off with an exciting game in which we bowed to a highly-rated St. Mary's team by seven points. Since Vergennes is no longer in the Champlain Valley League, we have dropped the games with some of the smaller schools, which has left us meeting stronger opponents. Co-Captain Shirley Hamilton played her last basketball games for V.H.S. this year and she will be missed greatly next season. With her favorite shot, a right-handed hook from the side, she racked up a total of I99 points, an average of I3 points a game. To replace the loss of this veteran, there are many promising substitutes. Among them are Ann Langeway, Marjorie Veysey, and Rachael Bristol. Due to an injured ankle, Co-captain Margaret Hanna was forced to watch three games from the sidelines. However, she hit the nets for a total of IH7 points, averaging I3 points per game. Shirley Mitchell, who is quick and plays a good floor game, has tallied for IH2 points, an average of 9 points per game. In the back court the guards proved their playing ability by intercepting passes, getting rebounds, and thoroughly confusing their opponents. Margaret Booth, Barbara Chamberlain, and Sally Bush have also played hard and showed their value to the team. Next year we hope to come back with an even stronger team, since all the players will be veterans except one new forward. 1

Danyow, R. Stebbins Vergennes High School basketball practice for the I952-53 season started DFODIUOUSIY laS'C November with the new coach, Ronald 'Moose' Davis eyeing his unfamiliar proteges very care- fully. From the 2I boys at that first practice, Coach Davis rounded up a fine varsity team, and also an up-and-coming Junior Varsity Club. In a busy season of I8 games, the team rolled up I0 wins over their opponents, thereby totaling 794 points for Vergennes. Ripchik, playing forward, walked off with high-scoring record of 249 points which he copped in I5 games, making him an average of I6 points per game. Lackard chalked up I20 points in I7 games, averaging him 7 points a game, while Whitty won II7 points in I8 games, averaging 6 Points a game. The team will lose three able veterans, Ripchik, Lackard and Whitty, in the graduating class this year, but other promising material is forthcoming, including Hubert Atkins, Tom McCormick, Fred LeBeau, Ken Drew, and Robert Ross.
