We can be proud of our higher academic standards, improved morale among the students, and more efficient operation of the school as a whole. Our student body knows that this progress is a direct result of the vigorous and tireless endeavor of our principal, Mrs. Smith. lt was largely due to her ideas and efforts that the new student organization, El Senado, was initiated and de- veloped. Always behind the scenes-yes, and on the scene, Mrs. Smith can be found cheering Verdugo on to new and greater accomplishments. In addition to these many contributions, she has found time to add a doctorate in education to her name, giving her a title in which we experience a mutual pride. To Dr. Giertrud Smith, for her zealous effort, never-say-die attitude, and un- failing interest in making our school top rank, we the 1960 Annual Staff, dedicate this yearbook. SECOND ROW: Art Parker, Bob Herring, Chuck Goodwin, Joe Spitler, Ken Bachman, Mike Skeeters, Jim Fox, Bob Crossan, Allan Chassey, Mike Davis. THIRD ROW: Coach Reeves, Pat Vargas, Elvie Cranmer, Don After going undefeated for six straight games, the finest grid team in the history of Verdugo finished their season with a 6-2 record. Fourth place in the final Northern League standings was an ill-deserved fate for the fighting Dons. All-Northern League tackle, Spencer Baughman, was a main cog in our forward wall - picked by many as the best line in the Polar Loop, A well- rounded backfield, consisting of Ken Bachman, Jim Fox, and Al Chassey provided the rooters with many thrills with their long touchdown runs. The premiere performance of the Dons went as expected when they proved iust too much for the revenge minded San Fernando Tigers, beating them I3-6. Jim Fox scored the winning touchdown in the last quarter on a twenty-yard run. The Yankees of Hamilton were downed I4-lo, in Verdugo's first home game. Again Verdugo scored a last minute touch- downto win the contest. I2O The Milk Bowl Game with newly-built Grant was one of the biggest victories of the season. Verdugo power, running and passing accounted for the lopsided 38-O final score. ., ,T ,-. ms ,, s,,h 1 . --. V . I sg - its, 1 'f MJ, s , I ,X .A ' ' 4 4-V. . 4 'PMA . FOURTH ROW: Willard McGhee, Bob Betsworth, Chuck Ross, Jim Brennan, Ron Hudspeth, Brian Seitz, Jim Hunter. Lincoln's Tigers went down to defeat, 12-6, in Verdugo's league opener. Again Jim Fox showed great breakaway ability as he won the game on a last minute, fourth quarter touchdown romp. Upset minded, the Belmont Sentinels gave Verdugo rooters a scare when, at the end of the third quarter, the score was tied 13-13. Ken Bachman, taking matters into his own hands, proceeded to score three touchdowns and kick four extra points to down the stunned Sentinels, 40-13. The visiting Northern League champs, Marshall Barristers, received a 12-7 drubbing. The Dons vowed to win this game because of last year's questionable loss to the Lawyers. The Eagle Rock Eagles proved to be unwanted guests at Verdugo's Homecoming Game. They downed the fighting Dons, 13-19. At a specially arranged night game, the Dons met the Franklin Panthers, with whom they were tied for the Northern League crown. Being the last game for each team, the contest was a must. The Dons fought hard, but couldn't capitalize on a few breaks. When the gun sounded the Dons owned the short end of the 13-7 final score, dropping them into a non-deserving fourth place. 121 Spencer Baughman Gary Gudmundson Elvie Cranmer James Kirkham Ron Hudspelh John Stephens 122 Mike Davis Charles Holtz Allen Chassey .lohn Stephens Pal Vargas i fy Mike Baldwin Dan Kilmer 4 2 Chuck Goodwin Couch Hough ,- Coach Reeves M. Thompson, J Wetzel T Samyn K. Kaynor, S. Rufner. The story of this year's B team is not an easy one to tell. Plagued by countless iniuries and inexperienced squad members, the team fought hard and clean all sea- son. These two factors combined with internal complications were the contributing reasons to the Jr. Dons' two win six loss record. Playing against the San Fernando Tigers in the opening game, the Dons were downed O-12. The Hamilton Yankees managed to squeak by the Dons 6-13. Against Grant the Jr. Dons proved their superiority by a 19-12 score. After dropping the league opener to Lincoln 0-12, the B's came back against Belmont. lt has been said that the Sentinels possess one of the best B teams in the city, but this did not stop the Jr. Dons as they held Belmont to a scoreless half. ln the second half, Belmont's strength proved superior as they coasted on to win O-12. The Barristers of Marshall walked by the Dons 6-13. Against Eagle Rock the Dons were overpowering as they marched over the Eagles 19-12. ln their final league game the Jr. Dons could not overcome the litters and fumbled their way into a O-26 score. The team, composed of many first year footballers, played very well all season. We feel that the experience gained will aid these boys when they become future varsity competitors. 1 i 'P . 9 'if lu- ' U iw sf 4255 Pr , . .0 FBGIBALL ARS ITT BAS ETBA YM Phlp S v ' VA A v 'V' vi' Y' A v 'v v' 'Y' Y' ' v iff? 1 4' ,-? . 5 . .. The sprint squad was headed by Chuck Taylor, Alan Packard, and Steve Wilson. The 440 yard dash was run by Keith Manley, and the 880 found Al Hyman in the top position. The hard hearted Verdugo mile runners, who gave excellent performances, were Stan Rufener, and Ron Nathanson. Among the fine hurdlers were Charles Butler and Phil Crawford. Bob Betsworth, Ver- dugo's top shot putter, set a new school record. ln the other field events Charles Butler and Dick Landweer participated in the pole vault, each doing twelve feet. Steve Miller and Ron Winkler cleared the high iump bar, and Bob Crossan flew over the sand in the broad iump.
