Ivan Gilbert Joined the class in the second grade, LaVonne Johnson in the sixth grade and Perry Vander Plaats in the eighth grade. We started making our high school history in the fall of 1946 when thirteen freshman were enrolled in VHS. Ivan Gilbert, Donna Jacobsen, Richard Johnson, Rhoda Knutson, Donald Otkln, Donald Henningsen, Devona Zarecky, Perry Vander- Plaate, Louis Vande Voorde, LeRoy Whittrock, Laura Olson, Joyce Nielsen, and LaVonne Johnson were members of our class with Mrs. Soderlind acting as advisor. After being initiated by the seniors we were accepted as members of VHS. We entertained the high school to a skating party at Lake Benton. During the year we were sorry to see LeRoy Whlttrock and Donald Otkin leave our class. When we resumed our places in the assembly in 1947 we found that we had lost one member, Laura Olson. Later during the year, Rhoda Knutson, also left our midst. Mrs. Soderlind was our advisor again. Our class party was given December 14 vhen we went to a show in Pipestone. Everyone came back for our busy Junior year. We also welcomed one new member, Tony DeZeeuw. For our class party we went to the show, N30 Dear To My Heartn in Pipestone, After many weeks of practice we presented a comedy, HAnyth1ng Might Happenu on December 10 with a repeat preformance on December 14. Our class rings arrived December lOth. The highlight of our Junior year was the Jr.--Sr. ban quet. Our theme, HCandle11ght Reun1on,N was carried out in rose and white During the latter part of the year Donald Henningsen left our class. With our school days rapidly coming to an end we again returned to Verdi High to reach the goal we have worked for during our 12 years in school. Our class was reduced to six members, with one new boy, Lorin Van't Hull. We car- ried on the custom of initiating the freshmen doing many foolish things. We en tertalned the high school to a supper and later the show, NCalam1ty Jane,W in Plpestone. Our class advisor again directed our play, NBabies Night Out.N It was presented on April 14. The long awaited skip day proved to be worth waiting for. We attended the Ice Follies in Minneapolis and also visited many places of interest in the cities. We stayed at the Anthony Hotel from April 28 to April 50th. To close the history for the class of '50 we attended Class Night, May 50th, Baccalaureate, May 28th, and Graduation, June lst. Our motto is NEver Climbing to Success,N our class flower, whlte rose, and our class colors are green and white. On June 2nd, we came to school for the last time as seniors of VHS. n Q . We were called into coundl with the Seniors, who told us what we had to say and wear. When the great day finally dawned, brlgnt and clear,we were all here, daxled out in our holiday finery. The girls wore men'e overalls and shirts, inside out and backwards, different colored socks, curlers, ribbons, but no make up the boys wore skirts and blouses inside out and bacxwards, dlfferent colored socks, curlera, ribbons, and make up. Well, another link has been added to our chain of high school years. Another year of joyful experience to jot down in our memory book. It seems almost impossible that we have already completed an- other one of our four short high school years. Letfs glance back to the beginning of l9U9 and review some of the memorable incidents. The first thing, if you will remember was initiation of the freshman class. NWoe was themfn How they suffered! The pungent odor of onion tormenting them all day long and the futile efforts por- trayed by them trying to walk on shoes with one low heel and one high one. After a day of unsufferable torment, the freshman with the rest of the high school went to a movie in Pipestone--nCalamity Janeu. The next ordeal was the high point of the yearg our annual carnival. Everyone showed the genuine carnival spirit, and with every- ones co-operation, we managed to turn out a pretty good carnival. The highlight of the evening was of course, the crowning of the carnival king and queen. The honor was bestowed upon the candidates from the junior class--Donna Reinke and Donald Boll. Donald has been king for two Years. He's a real ladies man. We also had the talent show. Dale Einck, Marvin Jurgens, and Theresa Habenau tied for first place. The next event was the giving of the Junior Class Play, NI Wouldn't Known. This was a hilarious three-act comedy of a lunatic house. Some very fine talent was unearthed as a result of the Junior's first production. Of course, at two week intervals each student is presented with a copy of the school newspaper, UVerdi Voiceu. This includes grade news, news of high school classes, special'events?'andioffcourse Katy's Korner. It manages to keep us pretty well informed about our school pals. The editor-in-chief is Devona Zarecky. At the beginning of the year, we were organized in three groups for singing: girl's chorus, boy's chorus, and mixed chorus. We were under the direction of Mr. Hamilton. We made public appearance at the Verdi Grain Show. , ' - 'X All of the freshmen and sophomore girls were enrolled in Mr. Blum's phy-ed classess which were held each Wednesday and Friday. Dur- ing the year we played basketball, archery, shuffle board, kitten ball, badminton, and rope jumping. Our tumbling team, composed'of'ourimore agile girls Kwhich excluded most of usl, put on a good performance at some of the home basketball games. The Senior Class Play, UBabies Night Outu proved to be a how- ling success. People from far and wide came to see our might seniors portray their acting talent. Something new was added this year! A Miss VHS contest, spon- sored by Mr. Bradley. Out of the many girls entered Anastasia Kinney proved to be the most beautiful. As a prize she was awarded a beauti- ful formal given her by Geyermans in Pipestone. 'N i 4 tt r ff .f r is 'S . When the skies clouded up and snow fell the Versodians retreated to their winter grounds, the gym. Here calisthenics and tumbling occupied their time until the basketball season began for the boys. Meanwhile the girls were also playing badminton, basketball, and skipping rope as well as playing shuffleboard and tumbling. Tournaments were held in several activities. The Junior-Senior Benchwarmers won both the class tourny and defeated the All-Stars in basketball, Eldon and Dale were bovs champs at badminv ton. In the girls Phy. Ed. class Marlys Knutson was archery champ, Dolores Jurgens won honors in tumbling, Dorothy Kuehl in basketball and in badminton Dorothy Kuehl and Joyce Theel took first place. , When the skies finally became sunny again after we had almost given up hope, it was the second week in May before spring really ar- rived, track, archery and more baseball kept us all in good spirts. I talked to Coach Blumm about the b sketball team and this is what he had to say about the first team boys: Perry was always playing to the full extent of his ability. He was a good rebounder and had a good Jump shot from the hole. He played his best games on our small floor. I especially liked his play in the second Russel game. ' Fred was our best shot from the outside. I was very glad to see him get rebounds with the best during the last half of the season despite his height handicap. Ralp was a good aggressive offensive guard by the end of 'tho season. His ball handling was excelent in the tournament, 'wherel he played his best game. Royal was deliberate while Ralph was aggressive making a good guard combinations Royal reached his peak in the second Russel game with an outstanding floor game. Deo--slow, steady improvement is the story for Dee.p It was a pleasure to watch him develop from game to game. He was a good ver- satile center by tournament time. 1 - - Dale was the team's outstanding rebounder on both boards. This plus his excellent team spirit, passing and shooting make him a valuable asset to the team. '. Eldon made tremendous progress during the season, especially on floor play and defense.' He developed an one hand shot that was vire tually impossible to stop. p ,C-,2fQ5f,,,g,,fL, 2Jaa.f. Mann, i 'VWTJ i A ,mhL Dee Ile r Ralph Lynn wat? From this date on for the rest of your life this book will be a cheerful reminder of one year out of the lives of those connected with the Verdi School. I have tried not to overlook any person connected with our school, if I have please forgive me, it was definitely not on purpose. I wish to express my deepest thanks to the many who have worked hard to make this Versodian one of the best ever. The staff was well chosen and worked hard. Mr. Cummiskey's outstanding guid- ance and work with new typists is to be commended, My thanks goes to our Superintendent, Mr. Hamilton, for his patience and helpful guidance to me and the staff. It has been wonderful working with a pleasant up and coming group. The bestgof everything to you, the Versodians. v EIN S incerely, teygtiwff t gnfigffe ww Www 0 wp!
