Cougar Spirit Is Contagious as E. i Rfftl 'TI' Gooooaooo Cougar Spirit was kept alive throughout the summer. Early reveille, sore muscles, aching feet, and lar- yngitis were all part of the cheerleading routine at Pepper- dine University's camp of champs. They earned four supe- rior ratings, added four trophies, and a special unity plaque to the list of accomplishments. The cheerleaders appeared with an all new look. They received new uniforms for the basketball seasons. The uni- forms were short sleeved, mainly white in color, with black and gold trim around the sleeves and the bottom of the skirt. They also had a cougar painted on their megaphones. Also they had new cheers and movements to the fight and victory song. Behind the many pep rallies, cheers, and spirit club meetings was a group of girls. These girls were selected for their personality, citizenship, responsibility, and poise to enhance our school pride through athletic support. The cheerleaders sponsored a dance, helped in orientation, and noontime activities. The cheerleaders worked closely with the band, Cougar Spirit Club, cabinet and the athletic department to make Ventura High a good experience for all of us. Pep Squad X 13

MILE AFTER MILE Bandsmen Rolled Along '99 Left, fight, left, fight. is what you would have heard, had you been at VHS in August for band camp. The summer ended early for band members as they had to get up and go to band camp and march. The course of the year took the band from camp to parades, concerts, and halftime events. The 1980-81 band consisted of nearly 100 students. They represented our school at home games and competitions such as parades and the UCLA halftime event earlier in the year. They marched in various parades throughout the year including the Camarillo and Oxnard Christ- mas parades and the county fair parade last fall. About one-third of the marching band also belonged to the pep band. The pep band represented our school at away games. Earlier in the year they had a concert at Community Memorial Hospital. Performing with the band were the attached units fthe small and tall flagsj. They added a special appeal to our band. During the many performances of the band throughout the year, the band boosters Cparents of the band membersj were there to help organize their activities and fund raisers. They kept the band marching by helping them in small ways such as carrying the water bottles for them during the parades and chaperoning field trips. They also worked in the refreshment booth at our home games. The 1980-81 marching band was directed by Mr. Tom Jenkins and drum major Neil SooHoo. 14 X Band CEA., QEQWSS 082. l Q Ogi f, GSIAZ J ,' a if-ig. 52351: ,, MW' if' tt
