One of the most important experiences in high school is the building of relationships, and the chance to watch them grow stronger and closer. The good times we spend with friends, whether it be having fun at a game or party, or just sit- ting and talking, will help us to become more sensitive in our rel- ationships with others. How often when we've felt down - after failing a test of having an argument with our parents - has a friend been there to listen, give an encouraging smile, and lift our spirits? Sometimes the relationships are taken advantage of. But on the most part, students agree that without these friendships there would be no spark of interest in school, and happiness would just fade away. ' As one senior commented, '5It's funny when I look back and remember how afraid of high school I was. I was so sure I wouldn't have any friends, and that lid be spending my time in the library, trying to look like a brain, rather than a loner. As my three years come to a close, I can reflect on so many close and valuable friendships, that I wouldnlt trade for anything! The casual friendliness that V.H.S. is known for makes com- munication with teachers, as well as our peers, much simpler. To reach out and care - to really try and communicate with each other - will not only benefit us now, but it will help us mature and understand ourselves, as well as others in the future. As entering sophomores, we found every day filled with a variety of challengesg as juniors the unique campus atmosphere encouraged us to get involved and as seniors we earned the freedom to reflect on all that we accom- plished. In the course of cementing the foundation of learning, the fun of lunch time competition, the glamour of homecoming, the thrill of winning, and the agony of losing, will be tucked in our memo- ries forever. Pep Squad Cougar Spirit Is Contagious as E. i Rfftl 'TI' Gooooaooo Cougar Spirit was kept alive throughout the summer. Early reveille, sore muscles, aching feet, and lar- yngitis were all part of the cheerleading routine at Pepper- dine University's camp of champs. They earned four supe- rior ratings, added four trophies, and a special unity plaque to the list of accomplishments. The cheerleaders appeared with an all new look. They received new uniforms for the basketball seasons. The uni- forms were short sleeved, mainly white in color, with black and gold trim around the sleeves and the bottom of the skirt. They also had a cougar painted on their megaphones. Also they had new cheers and movements to the fight and victory song. Behind the many pep rallies, cheers, and spirit club meetings was a group of girls. These girls were selected for their personality, citizenship, responsibility, and poise to enhance our school pride through athletic support. The cheerleaders sponsored a dance, helped in orientation, and noontime activities. The cheerleaders worked closely with the band, Cougar Spirit Club, cabinet and the athletic department to make Ventura High a good experience for all of us. Pep Squad X 13 MILE AFTER MILE Bandsmen Rolled Along '99 Left, fight, left, fight. is what you would have heard, had you been at VHS in August for band camp. The summer ended early for band members as they had to get up and go to band camp and march. The course of the year took the band from camp to parades, concerts, and halftime events. The 1980-81 band consisted of nearly 100 students. They represented our school at home games and competitions such as parades and the UCLA halftime event earlier in the year. They marched in various parades throughout the year including the Camarillo and Oxnard Christ- mas parades and the county fair parade last fall. About one-third of the marching band also belonged to the pep band. The pep band represented our school at away games. Earlier in the year they had a concert at Community Memorial Hospital. Performing with the band were the attached units fthe small and tall flagsj. They added a special appeal to our band. During the many performances of the band throughout the year, the band boosters Cparents of the band membersj were there to help organize their activities and fund raisers. They kept the band marching by helping them in small ways such as carrying the water bottles for them during the parades and chaperoning field trips. They also worked in the refreshment booth at our home games. The 1980-81 marching band was directed by Mr. Tom Jenkins and drum major Neil SooHoo. 14 X Band CEA., QEQWSS 082. l Q Ogi f, GSIAZ J ,' a if-ig. 52351: ,, MW' if' tt K ki. 5 'f A. This year offered individual competition in contests such as dress-up for Halloween, and king of the log. Spirit, and Unity were felt among students as they cheered on their class in the class competition. One of the highlights was the area cram, but many more events were there waiting for student participation. It was a lunch hour to get involved and really feel a part of VHS. lf? ' 2 it 5-tri X. There were varieties of dances ranging from semi-formal such as Homecom- ing to casual after-game dances, from unique dances like the Toga-Punk rock dance to the more traditional Backwards dance. Each dance held its own not only with dress, but with music offering different types to suit the wide span of VHS students tastes. This was a historic year in rock music, marked by the death of John Len- non and John Bonham. Musical preferences were varied. In the mellow strain, Chris Cross and Kenny Logins prevailed. Those liking harder sounds were into AC! DC and Van Halen, whereas the rock sounds were Pat Bena- tar and Supertramp. A few of the New Wave party groups were the Police and Elvis Costello. As always, music played a large part in the social scene at VHS. A. 22 X Dancing B. A. When the music starts it's time to hit the floor. B. Dancing X 23 Halftimes Display 'Cougar Pride' Halftimes were full of class and style, adding entertainment and sparking the crowds' interest. As the time on the clock ran out ending the second quarter, anticipation built for those performing, and also for the expectant audience. Participants in halftime shows put in long, dedicated hours of practice to make their performances the best possible. Involvement by Marching Band, Pep Band, Small and Tall Flags, Dance Team, and Pep Squad made 1980-81, a year to be proud of, proving we are number one, and displaying our COUGAR PRIDE. A D.J. must be able to control the flow of the music that is listened to by the students, faculty, and adminis- tration before and during school. This year, a great number of D.J.'s tried out for the envied jobg each person playing a different style and tune. There was an abundance of Punk Rock and it's rival, funk. A D.J. must be able to take criticism as well as everyones point of view. He must be ready to change the style of music and suit it to everyones taste. Working as a KVHS disc jockey was one of the most enjoy- able activities I participated in this year. The music I played was mostly rock. It included such artists as The Who, the Bea- tles and Bruce Springsteen. Being in a position to choose the music that other students listen to can be a challenge, because you have to find out what other people want to hear instead of just what YOU want to play. This year I learned to keep an open mind to other people's musical tastes, even though I was sometimes subjected to criticism of my own personal prefer- ences! But in January camera trucks, a crew, a cast, and a few stars pulled into Larrabee Stadium to start the filming of a coming motion picture, Longshot, starring Leif Gar- rett. Filming that was done at VHS not only offered enter- tainment for students after school, but gave an opportunity for some to be paid 'extras', and even to be in the main stream of action. Greg Quinn, a senior, was paid to be a referee, and although the pay wasn't substantial, the status and envy he received from other students kept him happy. They sponsored an ice cream give-away during the first week of school, and received the All School Assembly after seventeen years dormancy, to kick off a great year. Much of Cabinet's success can be credited to excellent leadership. Following the A.S.B. election last year, not one of the new officers had any previous experience in the student body Cabinet. This coupled with a new advisor, and a new assistant principal initially appeared to be an obstacle to suc- cess, but it proved to be beneficial in the unity it provided Cabinet as a group. Ventura High School is fortu- nate to have a student body that is tops and a staff that is dedicated to keeping VHS number l. To do this, all of us must always look to the future and make the changes and adjustments necessary to better meet the challenges which lie ahead. For students, VHS offers the opportunity to obtain an education that will allow them to be successful after gradu- ation. Those interested in college find a strong college pre- paratory program. Those interested in going to work after igh school can find many classes offered in the trades, business and homemaking areas. Regardless of specific interests, however, all VHS students have the opportunity to attend a school that encourages them to act responsibly and as they do so, to be given more independence as they move toward adulthood. I The staff at VHS is constantly .looking for new and bet- ter ways to meet the requirements of the student. Being selected as one of 53 high schools in California for a School Improvement Program is a tribute to the commit- ment of the staff to making things just a little bit better. The positive attitude of teachers is found in the classroom as they deal, on a daily basis, with not only the educational needs of students but also their personal and social con- cerns. Some are involved in programs to deal with the dif- ference in student learning styles. Some are working on clinical instruction, a process that increases teaching effec- tiveness. And some are members of the Campus Advocate Team, working to help students with problems, better adjust to the school situation by an offer of adult help and friendship. To sum up, the students of VHS are fortunate to beable to go to a school that maintains a positive learning climate and allows for full growth of individual potential with responsibility. It is a proud school. Cougar Proud! Tr kr-Q--2-V3-' - Dr. T. M. REE-ldy to aid and advise, counselors are always there to support the students - and sometimes even a perplexed teacher. Assisting the students to grow by discussing with them the rele- vance of their educational needs, the counselors help the students to cope in todays world for tomorrow. A counselor relieves your tension at the time of registration. He experiments with your schedule to make everything fit perfectly. Then, just as you get ready to throw in the books and have a break- down, a counselor comes to your rescue. Of course, school is not the only subject a counselor is an expert in. If you're having problems adjusting to the strain in todays soci- ety, if you have butterflies in the stomach, throbbing in the head, frogs in the throat, fear of the future, panic in the soul, and if you're not in love, then a counselor will be ready and waiting at your side to help you adjust. The counselors at Ventura High School listen to the students car- ingly. They give unselfish devotion to each and everyone. 96 X Living si. . Charlotte Sydnor, Counselor, College Dept. When a student is lost fliterallyl, his instincts lead him to the main office where he knows that he will find assistance. If he is not relieved from his confusion right away, it is because the staff is busy running off 97 dittoes, answering phone calls until five people are put on hold, typing up the stack of papers that need to get into the mail by 2:23, or looking into the alphabetized files for a missing student. But stick around for five minutes more and you will hear a smiling clerk yell found it! . What they have found, is you! After your troubled mind has had a chance to rest, look around at the cheerful faces that are ready and willing again to help the next person that enters the door. And when you leave, you should be at ease, because the VHS office staff sits in a position of trust and authority. Discussing several essential subjects is the S.I.P. Committee. Ventura High School has two special programs that are conducted on campus: the School Improvement Program and the ESEA-Title I Program. The School Improvement Program is designed to pro- vide opportunities for students, staff, and parents to design the kinds of programs that will better meet the educational needs of all students at VHS. Title I, on the other hand, is designed to provide addi- tional services to students who qualify for some addi- tional help. Both programs have this in common: they exist in order that students can make the most of the high school experience, and, in the process, realize their individual potentials. Learning X 99 There is a Special Service d8p3I'lI1'18I'1l at Ventura High School that consists of desperately needed people such as the librarians and the nurse who not only handles all accidents and health prob- lems, but also the medical records. Other teachers and aides give individual instructionng to students with learn- ing disabilities. There are so many jobs that the people at VHS overlook. So who gets the honors of doing these jobs? The special people such as the textbook clerk who keeps track of class- room media materials. Or the campus aides who make sure that everyone is at the right place at the right time. Though the range of service is vast, close work and atten- tion with the students at VHS is common among these helpful adults. It's also pride in the collective achievement of the band and atta- ched units and working hard to attain the goals of the group. Most important, it is pride in self. Being proud to be who you are. That's my main advice to musicians . . . that and practice, prac- tice, practice! - Tom Jenkins - --g f Tom Jenkins A. Pride is seen in the firm hand of a music student, above. B. Below, two band members put on the finishing touches Art Groveman before marching off into another competition. Photography class was especially 6XCll1I1g. The students worked in the lab with enlargers A P and chemicals, and several active photographers participated in numerous photosafaris. - The class trips ventured to various areas of California such as Pismo Beach, Los Angeles and the Pasadena Art Center where they toured the beautiful modern architecture around the campus. The students were also fortunate to be present for a live filming of Real People. Then, on the way back to Ventura, a special stop was made in Malibu so art students could sketch and photo students could click away. Another very positive and thoroughly enjoyed experience was a trip to Utah and Las Vegas where pictures were taken of the cities, mountains, sunsets, waters, and other breath-taking pieces of nature. The participation for the photosafaris', was outstanding this year, as were the worthwhile results of Mr. Groveman's photography class. 102 X Living Larry Weiss ff! f 3 i . , b t I Larry Waltz Kent Quinn H , ir. If you ever took a psychology class here at Ventura High, you would know that this class covers much more than what a mind can think of. For in this class, you learn who the 'real you' is. You are led through a fantastic jour- ney into your inner-self and taught how to capture feelings and emotions, as well as how to let them go. You are shown how to express yourself and how to keep your 'word'. You learn about such things as communication, love, jealousy, responsibility, and freedom. The English Department presents a many -faceted cover- age of our language in its courses in grammar, literature, journalism, speech, dramatics, and reading. But, in addi- tion to English, some students also master French, Ger- man, Spanish or Latin. The Language Arts Department at Ventura High School is represented by a group of very capable instructors. The staff is a large one and extremely active in its many areas. The main purpose of the Language Arts Department is to give students the necessary skills to communicate with others in the world. It is a good thing to keep in mind when signing up for classes at registration next year, that math classes are offered at every level and for all interests. So, if you can only see mathematics as a bunch of large numbers and pretty symbols that float along the blackboard, then getting into the appropriate math class will take care of this problem. The nursery meets the needs of these parents who require competent childcare while they continue their education, but still want to stay close to their infants. This year, VHS, has expanded their nursery in a class- room to an enclosed area by the pool. The Cougie Kittens are really enjoying the fresh air and open space that ena- bles them to romp around freely. You should now feel very confi- dent and sure of yourself as a driver. The Drivers Ed class at VHS is wonderful. It is probably the first class a high school student encounters where such a large degree of responsibility is needed. Many practical lessons are taught to Drivers Ed students, and every one of them is vitally important to mastering driving techniques. Though you never thought you would ever hold that silver key in your hand, you probably glided right through the Drivers Ed course. Like when every stomach alarm at VHS goes off and hundreds of starving students fbet- ter known at this time as packwolvesj come rushing all at once to put their principal organ of digestion out of misery. Then, there are times when, at the snack bar, a student throws a fit- showing every fang and cavity - because of a shortage of chocolate chip cookies. There are other memorable experiences the VHS Cafeteria Staff must go through also . . . like watching the well prepared food being gracefully flown around during a monthly food fight. The obvious channels are classes in areas that will allow the enrichment of knowledge to take place. But other less obvious means of learning occur outside the classroom: in the hallways, conversation at lunch on the lawn, and in the social curriculum which is an undeniable part of public high school in America today. y These things are no less important, as they allow'a student to develop their own potential in day to day relations with people. .8-Jn---an A typical scene as seen by the teachers at VHS: craziness, boredom and daydream- ing. ff 7' 6 E Av If you bug me one more time . . .just one more time , . . 126 X Living r Julie Marshal skrunches her face in dislike. From the first day we began putting together the BlackGold, we kept this in mind. We tried to capture those special times that made up one year of your life at VHS. This book holds many memories of 1980-81, and I hope that each time you look back through it, you can feel and remember all of the good times spent here, and the special people that made up an important part of your life. 238 X Editors Page If fs . .fx i This has been a very special year for me. And through all of the frus tration, tears, disappointments, and times I felt like giving up, I car now say I'm thankful I've had the opportunity of being editor durin my senior year. The friends I've met, the lessons l've learned, and thj crazy experiences this year have been the highlight of my years here a VHS. It takes special people to make a yearbook happen, and I would like to thank the BlackGold staff for the time, effort, and dedication pu forth to make this book special. To the people behind the scenes, sucl as Mrs. Ruzicka, our advisor, who took our backfires and always kep an optimistic outlook, and to my parents who believed in me and triec to understand me, even near deadlines, thanks! I 1 , But I owe a very special thank you to Lisa Zier, assistant editor, who not only pulled her end of the work and shared crazy times with me but also always kept a positive attitude that kept me going. Thank yor so much, Lisa. Best of luck, '8l! Live for today, dream of tomorrow - but do hola on to yesterday. flaw? with W wxwwww joaglfiibff gg ff W? Cf Qimvs 55gf52?5mlMwff15 2 SS E S 5 S3232 Q?
