'o This is the last TIME Composed of 311 members, the graduating class ot 1955 is the first group of students to have attended VSH tor three years. As sophomores they resigned themselves to the tact that it would be two years until they would be allowed to set toot on the revered senior lawn, and they enrolled on September 11, 1954, as top men on the totem pole at last. The year was highlighted by many activities, among them the senior play, June Mad, a breakfast, ditch day, and the prom. In gray caps and gowns the class will receive their diplomas from Dr, Wayne Simpson in the auditorium on June 16, and their three years at Ventura Senior High will be climaxed with an all night party, sponsored by the P,T,A. SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Leif Landberg, president, Barbara Marriott, secretary, Bradley Munn, treasurer, Mary Lou Loring, vice-president, Mr. Walter Meyers, sponsor. fl I su' x , iid 0 'E' Jon Addison Rex AndiS Sharon Archibald David Battord L' . ,J --1 f f , f 4, ffm f f if7f?f-'fs ., V 5 :,, V .,,' V C! -' ,f , l ' . , ,' , Q' 1 f' , , X ' 'LLL ,gf 5 Q, 1 ,115 533.-'C Lf !,fof's1s+4v 7' ,CLK-' ' U .7 A, 1 sy F f I , It f A , 1.1 ' 'xi u,f,,-4. Many hours during and after school have been spent in choosing a theme, working up a dummy, taking pictures, and selling advertise- ments. Even though our cover has not been done in the traditional school colors, we hope students will be pleased with this change. After a dummy was completed, each staft member was assigned a section of the book, Linda was put in charge of student government, classes, and faculty, Gretchen worked out the divisions for clubs and activities, Bob was responsible for the sports section, which included both boys' and girls' athletics, Roland set about creating the drawings which appear through- out the book, and Marlene began to call upon the many merchants of the town in hopes of selling them advertising space in the book. The entire staff worked together to fashion the separate sections into one finished product, and we hope that you will enjoy this yearbook as much as we have enjoyed editing it for you. 80 Linda Howard Editor Roland Touchert Art editor Marlene White Business manager Gretchen Ver Husen Assistant editor Bob Cole Sports editor Barbara Bird Pat Hughes Bob Wheeler Photographers Miss Cromwell Advisor COUGAR STAFF Editor-in-chiet lst semester, Tony Leonard 2nd semester, Ona Slaybaugh Page One Editor . During the pre-Christmas season, the 58-member choir visited hospitals and private homes to sing Christmas carols. On the last day of school before Christmas vacation, the choir strolled through the halls singing popular carols and invited untrained voices to join them. At the assembly, the choir marched down the aisles singing O Come All Ye Faithful in the traditional Christmas style to begin the annual program of well-known carols. Staging the spring show, Pirates of Penzance, was theeir main project for the year. With over 60 mmbers total in their cast, they turned in two nights of excellent singing and acting under the capable direction of Mrs. Bercaw. A Timely Pla A three act comedy of modern youth, June Mad was presented by the senior class in December before large audiences of students and public The thirteen members of the cast spent many hours rehearsing, plus untold hours outside which were spent in the learn- ing of lines. They met every day after school for two and sometimes three hours with sev- eral night rehearsals. Behind the scene crews worked night after night on publicity, costumes, props and the stage setting which all contributed to making the final staging a finished production. When casting a play, the director takes on a big responsibility. He must see that the parts are well cast, the players learn their parts, and become good actors, plus encouraging them when the going gets rough. Mr. Shana- han, director, was all this and more to the cast which will always remember the senior play and the fun they had presenting it. . . June CAST Penny Wood . Chuck Harris , Mrs. Wood . Bob Cole Bo of the Quarter Award Dick Mays Ron Wallace Brains, citizenship, personality, and athletic ability are all combined in Dick Mays, this year's first Boy of the Quarter. Dick is an active member of CSF and NHS, president ofthe Lettermen's club and Key club, and his strong example of clean sportsmanship teamed with his rugged determina- tion to play football as it should be played, helped him gain the confidence of teammates when they chose him captain of the football team. The outstanding basketball player from Ventura, the boy who was chosen all-tournament player at Fillmore, one of the seniors on the all-tournament Beverly Hills team, and a member of the first team all-CIF is Ron Wallace, receiver of the second Boy of the Quarter award. Besides being a terrific basketball player Ron is active in Key Club and Lettermen's club. His citizenship record has always been tops while his school grades have been envied by many. Another honor has gone to Dick Gould, student body presidentl For his outstanding leadership and interest in school affairs, the Boys' Federation and faculty members have found him deserving of the third Boy of the Quarter award. His valuable contribution to the tennis team and to the dixie land jazz band has been witnessed by all students. Although known principally for his ability to wield a gavel, he adds Key club and Lettermen's club to his list of activities. lDick was chosen too late for his picture to appear in the book.l STAGE CREW Row 1: Dewey Russell, Richard Gallagher Harold Harmon. Row 2: Mr. Michael Shanahan, Gary Kallusky, Walter Marks Don Salseao One at the hardest working groups an campus is the Stage Crew. In- tricate decorations provide atmosphere for the dancers, whether the setting is a storyland or an oriental garden. Once Upon a Time was the theme for this year's backward dance spone sored by the Girls' League. Decora- tions recalled childhood memories at Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, and Little Miss Muttet. At the annual Christmas dance, couples entered the dance floor through an enormous wreath to view the intricate throne of the Candy Cane King and Queen. The five piece Marshall Cram band was the dance highlight of the year when he played at the April dance, Spring Spree. An Oriental garden was the setting tor the senior prom, which was the last dance of the year and sponsored by the junior class. ps, , at ,Y ,,.f' Y, X X ,varn- I-Siu:-n H' gn! . 'fl fi Q - 2: : e..
