llll lll Ulllllllll Persome, the bishop's sister, Leona Stearns, Marie, her servant girl, Letha Lowe, the bishop, Gordon Cairns, the convict, Harvee Dunshee' the sergeant, James Maclsaac, the gendarme Meredith Newman. 1 I Ellllll lllllllll Three mayor productions were offered this year by the Ventura Junior College Dramatics department: The Bishops Candlesticks,' An Old Kentucky Garden, and The Queen's Husband. William Viehman directed the productions, mak- ing the year a notable one for the school, ln addition, the drama department, under the spon- sorship of Miss Carter and Mr, Viehman, produced several assembly programs, and provided speakers and plays for Ventura clubs and social groups. The Bishop's Candlesticks, presented as part of the annual Christmas Show, was taken from Victor l-lugo's immortal novel, Les Miserables. In the play, Jean Valjean, through the kindness and understanding of the Bishop, regains his lost faith in mankind. The excerpt truly depicts the spirit of the Christmas season. Fine talent was displayed in the production by Harvey Dunshee, Gordon Cairns, Leona Stearns, and Letha Lowe. Principal parts in An Qld Kentucky Garden - the operetta presented as the Spring Show were necessarily vocal solo parts, Viehman, however, directed the staging, and all of the speaking parts in the production. As the name implies, the set- ting is in the south, and the story takes place during a very colorful period of southern history. Excellent performances were given by every member of the cast, and the staging was exceptional. The final dramatics activity of the school year --the Queen's Husband -was given May nine- teenth by a representative group of junior colleg- ians. lt was a play of unquestionable merit written by Robert Sherwood, and had been produced by many outstanding universities. lt marked another step forward in the progress of the dramatics department. With its setting in an obscure kingdom, this play carried one through the exciting circumstances attending revolution, royal marriages, court intrigue, and royal families.
