lllllllllllllllil Under the excellent direction of l-larold B l-lowe, exceptional work was done by the instrumental department of Ventura Junior College. Jim Kisselburg, quarter-back, garnered l8 of these points to lead the Western Division. Ventura and Los Angeles iunior colleges tied for the l937 Western Division championship. Showing plenty of power and speed throughout the season, the Pirates lost only one league game. in addition, they defeated Santa Maria, Fullerton, Santa Barbara State Frosh, and Marin iunior college in non-league games but lost to Taft. Sports scribes agreed that the Pirates showed more power and precision in their l937 season than they had for several years in the past. The Ventura backfield was composed of Jim Kis- selburg, Albert Friedman, Roy l-lays, Gerry Baptiste, lVlarion Amescua, and Cliff Francom. By excellent blocking and precise teamwork in each game, they helped draw record crowds. The Pirates broke all local football attendance records on Armistice Day, when they trounced a strong Marin team Zl-7 on the junior high oval. Marin Junior College had been rated one of the best teams in Northern California Conference com- petition. Kenneth Cook, guard, Johnny Tsoutsouvas, tackle, Harry Armstong, guard, Buck Wilson, center, and Bob Pena, end, were outstanding in Ventura's line throughout the season. Albert Friedman, Pirate halfback, ended the season with the only field goal made by any team in the conference.
