8- Ellllllllllll ill-llllll A very lovely Christmas formal was enjoyed this year by Ventura Junior College students. George Cox, commissioner of activities, directed the formal, and the success of the affair was largely due to his work, The Christmas formal was held in the Masonic Temple and was presided over in a very courtly and dignified manner by Miss Emmy Weir, queen, and Gerald Baptiste, king, who were chosen by the student body to reign at the affair. Qlllllli Sllllll Departing from the former policy of presenting a variety show, the Ventura Junior College this year offered An Old Kentucky Garden, a two-act operetta as the Spring Show. Participating departments demonstrated excellent cooperation in this production. Solo parts and a massed chorus were directed by Addie Belle Long. Accompanying and incidental music by the theatre orchestra was directed by l-larold B. l-lowe, Stage and speaking parts were directed by William Viehman. This proiect was exeeiient because it attorded praeticai appiieation ot eoior and design priricipies, The sets ot both the anriuai Spring Show and the i938 dramatic productions were designed by the art department. iihi iiiiihiii To create interest in borne iite, the Home Economics ciub was estab- iished and attiiiated with the Nationai Home Economics Association, its activities this year inciuded a tea tor the Future Farmers and a Christmas party tor the Sheridan Way kindergarten pupiis. ll ll l ll llc The vocal music department of Ventura Junior College is composed of an a capella choir, a men's glee club and a womens glee club Under the capable direction ot Addie Belle Long, these organizations had a very active year. l Highlights in the activities ot the a capella choir, which does advanced choral work, included special work in the Christmas show, an Open-Door concert, and music for the baccalaureate services, All Spring Show soloists were chosen from the choir. Activities for the other groups included singing at football games by the men's glee club, and special a capella work in the Christmas show by the vvomen's glee club. Combined into one large chorus, the three organizations were featured in the Spring Show and completed a successful year by singing a Franz dedication at Commencement,
