Registration began for the fall semester. This early procedure was planned to avoid the confusion of some nine hundred men and women eager to study the many offered courses, demanding attention, asking advice and wanting answers to a thousand questions all at one time. Nevertheless, fall registration week was a busy one for T. J. Anderson, registrar, and Virginia Stover, secretary. But it was only the beginning. Scarcely were the files completed, the students in order, when February brought a new deluge of flying programs, noisy halls, and rushing feet. Registration for the spring semester was under way. This was the time to meet new friends, widen interests in one's fellowmen, fire ambition and plan future careers. With all the benefits that the college offers, it is never necessary to shanghai a crew of ,Priates to carry on the ever-increasing work of the school. UNA. SL'HSV.U5V.R. Activities for the other groups included singing at football games by the men's glee club, and special a capella work in the Christmas show by the vvomen's glee club. Combined into one large chorus, the three organizations were featured in the Spring Show and completed a successful year by singing a Franz dedication at Commencement, lllllllllllllllil Under the excellent direction of l-larold B l-lowe, exceptional work was done by the instrumental department of Ventura Junior College. In this department are the band, a symphony orchestra, and a theatre orchestra. The band played for all home football games and at several games at other schools, Activities of the local civic organizations supported by the band included the Kiwanis pet show, American Legion Armistice Day program, the Lions' Inter-county Council oratorical contest, the Chamber of Com- merce Day, the Christmas preview, the Parent-Teachers Association program, and the Open Door program, Representatives were sent to the Southern California Band Festival at Los Angeles, the Southern California Orchestra Festival at Santa Barbara, and the Allied Arts Festival at Los Angeles The entire band participated in the annual Santa Barbara Band Festival. A symphony orchestra provided music for the Christmas show. The theatre orchestra was organized at the start of the second semester and played for the Spring Show. A colorful drum-major corps of five students was formed to perform with the band, Soon after the beginning of the year, a dance orchestra, which was very popular at school dances, was organized and directed by Peter Pinkerton. 1.3 UTY' NVUORETTES .. Jim Kisselburg, quarter-back, garnered l8 of these points to lead the Western Division. Ventura and Los Angeles iunior colleges tied for the l937 Western Division championship. Showing plenty of power and speed throughout the season, the Pirates lost only one league game. in addition, they defeated Santa Maria, Fullerton, Santa Barbara State Frosh, and Marin iunior college in non-league games but lost to Taft. Sports scribes agreed that the Pirates showed more power and precision in their l937 season than they had for several years in the past. The Ventura backfield was composed of Jim Kis- selburg, Albert Friedman, Roy l-lays, Gerry Baptiste, lVlarion Amescua, and Cliff Francom. By excellent blocking and precise teamwork in each game, they helped draw record crowds. The Pirates broke all local football attendance records on Armistice Day, when they trounced a strong Marin team Zl-7 on the junior high oval. Marin Junior College had been rated one of the best teams in Northern California Conference com- petition. Kenneth Cook, guard, Johnny Tsoutsouvas, tackle, Harry Armstong, guard, Buck Wilson, center, and Bob Pena, end, were outstanding in Ventura's line throughout the season. The school barn was transformed into a genuine barn for this affair by the addition of hay, beanstraw, and farm implements, Deciding to revive a custom which has been over- looked for the past few years, the thirteens agreed to have class sweaters. The sweaters were in the class colors of maroon and grey. lllllllll llllllllllli Ruth Gilmore and Bill Sweet represent the highest scholastic and citizenship standards of the thirteens. William Viehman directed the productions, mak- ing the year a notable one for the school, ln addition, the drama department, under the spon- sorship of Miss Carter and Mr, Viehman, produced several assembly programs, and provided speakers and plays for Ventura clubs and social groups. The Bishop's Candlesticks, presented as part of the annual Christmas Show, was taken from Victor l-lugo's immortal novel, Les Miserables. In the play, Jean Valjean, through the kindness and understanding of the Bishop, regains his lost faith in mankind. The excerpt truly depicts the spirit of the Christmas season. Fine talent was displayed in the production by Harvey Dunshee, Gordon Cairns, Leona Stearns, and Letha Lowe. Principal parts in An Qld Kentucky Garden - the operetta presented as the Spring Show were necessarily vocal solo parts, Viehman, however, directed the staging, and all of the speaking parts in the production. As the name implies, the set- ting is in the south, and the story takes place during a very colorful period of southern history. Excellent performances were given by every member of the cast, and the staging was exceptional. The final dramatics activity of the school year --the Queen's Husband -was given May nine- teenth by a representative group of junior colleg- ians. lt was a play of unquestionable merit written by Robert Sherwood, and had been produced by many outstanding universities. lt marked another step forward in the progress of the dramatics department. With its setting in an obscure kingdom, this play carried one through the exciting circumstances attending revolution, royal marriages, court intrigue, and royal families. llll llll llllllllll llllllllll llll Ullllll llllllllll ' ll Jeanie, Colonel Staunton's Niece, Betty Taylor, Colonel Staunton, Bill Schneider, Richard, Jack Rains, Phillip, Bill Roe, Joy, Jane l-lildebrand, Adaliza, Alita Del-loyes, Stephen Foster, Howard Conklin, Hannah, Lillian West, l-lenry Blow, Jack Tobias, Maiiundar, Bob Bryan, friends ot the tamily, Elmina, Kathryn Stewart, William Kenneth Cook, l-lattie, Ada Lee Wilbanks, Beth, Walter Jones, Lizzie Beth, Evelyn Wells, colored servants, Toms, Carl l-lurley, Cotton, Ronald Byron, Joe Buzzard, Frank Botts, Mr, lvloneytold, l-larry Kurtz, Mr, Artichoke, Granville Lambert.
